Kwei blinked against the haze of sleep, her lashes fluttering as sunlight filtered through the shifting shade. Her hazel eyes lifted slowly, knowing Ruin was near. She hadn’t meant to drift off after the mushrooms, but somehow she’d known he would stay close.

A ghost of warmth still lingered on her cheeks, the trace delicate but unmistakable. She swallowed, her voice thick with sleep but edged with suspicion. “What are you doing?”

“Hm? There was a spider,” Ruin replied, his tone casual, though the slight tilt of his mouth betrayed a smirk.

Kwei narrowed her eyes, sitting up as she adjusted her bag, hands moving to feel out her stash hidden inside. “There was no spider,” she mumbled, more to herself than him. She had felt the pinch, the deliberate pause of fingers that lingered just a moment too long.

Ruin rose beside her, a quiet chuckle vibrating low from his mandibles with soft clicks. “Time to head back,” he said, as if nothing had passed between them, though the air still felt warm where his touch had been.
