She wakes up feeling different.
Like her entire body has shifted off of its carefully calibrated axis.
Outside, the sky is murky, flecks of darkness splattered across its canvas in its final hour before the sun wakes. Usually, at this time of day, Yolanda would already be getting dressed for her morning run—a sensible five miles. The temperature has been trending warmer as Pittsburgh settles into summer with breakneck speed. By mid-morning, the heat will have already climbed to an unbearable degree, enough that buildings will start to sweat.
She’s supposed to be doing a 12-miler today, in preparation for the Erie Marathon that's happening in ten weeks.
Yolanda has studied it well. The course itself is supposed to be fairly flat, with only a three-foot elevation throughout the whole race. Nothing compared to the Philly Marathon she ran months back where Manayunk tested her with its slow incline towards the finish line.
So: marathon training, groceries, meal prep, an abstract to submit to an upcoming conference, and a IRB proposal to finish editing for Shamsi’s review.
