my dream as a fanfic writer is for one day, one of my fics to be someones comfort fic. like the fic that they reread when they don't feel good and want to be happy. i want my words to comfort someone one day

the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

Things fall apart; the center cannot hold. Her dates with other people — it’s not that she’s stopped going on them, but residency is kind of kicking her ass and she can’t stop to let herself think about how much harder it would be if she actually double boards in surgery like she’s been telling everyone she wants to do. In the limited free time she has, she would rather get off with someone who knows her and knows what she wants instead of starting over with someone brand new.

It’s practical, that’s what she tells herself, the frequency with which she texts Garcia to blow off steam instead of finding some other girl. They haven’t spoken about their arrangement again. Bumble gathers dust in the social media folder on her phone. What Garcia is doing in her free time, she doesn’t want to know.

It was supposed to be, as she so confidently told Whitaker, just a game. A way for her to regain the upper hand.

But that’s the thing about playing games. You have to be prepared to lose.

Trinity learns things about Garcia the longer they spend together, but it’s hard to put the pieces together. Garcia is meticulous, routinized, boundaried. She doesn’t mince words or sugarcoat the truth and as far as Trinity can tell, she doesn’t think about Trinity at all outside of work and the nights they spend together. Trinity thinks about Garcia all the time. At the grocery store: that’s the same protein bar wrapper she saw in the cup holder of Garcia’s car. In line at the coffee shop: a passing whiff of deodorant reminds her of the time she’d been so desperate to taste any part of her that she’d licked the sweat from her armpits, how Garcia’s cunt had clenched down then, tight and hot around her fingers.

“Oh I am leading,” Garcia replies with her usual self-assuredness, sparing no doubt about who’s running this trauma now. “I guide, Dr. Santos cuts,” she ends in a tone that leaves no room for disagreement. Then, in a lower, slightly raspier, voice that has no business sounding as charged as it does to Trinity’s ears, she adds, “Santos is plenty capable of following directions.”  It’s embarrassing how fast Trinity’s face heats up. It’s an innocent enough comment, Garcia could have said those same words about anyone else. But there’s something else hidden in her tone.
