Nova gasped, the orange glow from the lava and blackstone under their feet indicating they were home. They were finally free from those goddamn vines. For a bit, at least. No telling how long it would last this time. There must be something that ix could do to stop the hellish creature, to be free from the coma, the-
Nova shook their head. Priorities. He had written a list about what they wanted to do somewhere, hadn’t they. He was-he should do that first. Or at least check it.
1. Check on Abe and Jelly
2. Try to get Clara free from the vines
3. Try to free myself from the vines (forever)
4. Apologize to Honey (i think i killed them at some point…?)
5. Apologize Ask for forgiven Talk to Void
They nodded to themselves, satisfied with the list. But before Nova could even try to decide where to go first, there was a crash! in the distance. Nova looked up just in time to see a cyan tail flick out of sight. Nova looked back at the book, and back at the doorway, sighed, and resigned themselves to deal with whatever the hell was going on.
Not bothering to put down the book, he staggered into the portal room, his wings trailing uselessly behind him. Something rustled in the corner, and it took no time to see who was intruding. “V?”
The demon started and turned around. Swords started spilling out of the bag slung over their shoulder, and the enchantment books in their arms fell to the floor. “Nova? Uhhh-”
“What the fuck are you doing in my house?” There was an edge to Nova’s voice, but not much. He didn’t want to deal with this.
V looked annoyed, and retorted, “The fuck are you doing being conscious?” Her face fell after a few seconds, and she rushed out “Sorry, I didn’t mean for it to sound like that, but-you were fuckin’ gone. I mean, for Gods sake, you killed Honey!” The rasp in her voice softened. “Nothing but that fuckin’ plant could do that.”
“So I did kill him…” Nova was dazed.
V shifted on her feet uncomfortably, and her tail twitched. “You-you don’t remember?”
“I've been trapped in the Cerulean for who knows how long, do you think I remember what I did while the vines were digging into my brain?” Nova was tired. He should probably just tell V to fuck off, but there was stuff to do. “Look, I don’t-I have no idea why you’d be taking my shit, but-“
“The plant.” V broke in abruptly, and hurried on. “Y’know-I figured that-I didn’t want the vines, Cerulean, what the fuck ever its called to have all of this valuble stuff so I was-moving it.”
Nova scowled. They hadn’t talked to V that many times, but this whole thing seemed suspicious. She didn’t seem like the type to do things out of the kindness of her heart. “Well, since I’m conscious, I say that those should stay in my house. So could you like, put those back?”
V scowled in return. “I was only trying to help you without getting infected myself. And you have enough shit anyway,” they said bluntly. “Mel and I don’t even have an iron block to our names.”
“That sounds like your problem then!” Nova threw their hands up and turned back to their list. “Go away, V. I’ve got things to do.”
Silence. After giving V a minute or two to leave, Nova turned back around and stared at them. They were looking around somewhat hesitantly, books and swords still in hand. Nova cleared vaeir throat loudly.
“Yeah yeah, I’ll leave,” V said impatiently. “I was just thinking…” Her voice softened. “Is there anything I could do to help? Now that you’re conscious? With your whole-y’know, blue vines shit?”
Nova sighed. Should it tell V about its precautions? I mean, who else could I talk to. After a pause that seemed to stretch on, Nova bit the bullet. “There’s…I have a list of things that I need to do,” he said shortly. “When I’m conscious.” There, that was enough info.
“Oh.” V stared at the floor absentmindedly, until a sword suddenly slipped from their bag and clattered to the floor. Both of them jumped, and the noise seemed to bring V to their senses again. “So could I like-see it or something? I could maybe help complet-?”
“NO!” Nova burst out. Gods, that was stupid, why on earth did I tell her?? she thought angrily. Then they changed pace. “Augh-fuck, sorry it’s all personal shit and I know-I don’t know if you…”
“Oh, y-yeah.”
Awkwardness hung in the room. Nova flopped down and leaned against the portal’s edge. “This is fucking exhausting. I’m sorry, I appreciate the help, and-and I don’t know if you were trying to help or what but just-“
Nova suddenly gasped. Fuck-it’s back. The familiar headache, the feeling of vibes digging in and infesting and rooting its way into his brain and the tinge of blue in their vision and-
She collapsed onto the floor and was shaking, using all of their energy to stay in control. Their body tensed up as they wished and hoped to stay and thought desperately No no nononoNONONO-fuck off give me my life back I NEED TO STAY I NEED IT.
The demonic plant-no, fucking parasite-was whispering again. She knew better than to listen, it was CRUCIAL that he didn’t hear a single word that the parasite said.
“Uhh-Nova? You okay?” There was a distant THUMP! and the sound of footsteps rushing over.
Their brain was getting foggy, her vision was tinting blue, it was coming back, returning, telling her to sleep, but she couldn’t, she musn’t, there were things to do-
They tried to clear their mind and choked out a “H…help…can’t-can’t hold it…off…”
V hesitated, but then grabbed Nova’s outstretched hand. “I-oh my gods, Nova, I’m so-can I do anything or-or what-”
Nova gave the smallest shake of their head. “Just…try to stop it…set me and Clara free. Please.”
The pain erupted through him once more, and he let out a painful, desperate scream. V was yelling something, Nova didn’t know what, the parasite was driving its words into his head, drowning out everything, saying to follow me listen to me ignore the pain it goes away when I am in control listen to me liSTEN TO ME-
Nova listened.
And they saw nothing but a bright, swirling cerulean.
