My doctor's appointment for my yearly physical was canceled, I heard about it from my Dad over the phone. wtf, and I just rescheduled that shit because he completely forgot to remind me that he was out of town when he was supposed to be my ride to the doctor's office...like, I'm never gonna get that physical done and over with, am I?
So I recently got a clean bill of health from my doctor. I must admit, I was initially nervous about even going. All we seem to hear about these days is some new rare disease wiping out people or how expensive it is, and even though I have insurance and complete coverage, the thought of using it also sent me into a panic. I didn’t want my premiums to rise or to find out that I have some condition that isn’t covered under the medical plan I have. But, a good friend convinced me of my need to go. Though I have a pretty good track record for being healthy, it is still a good idea to get a checkup. And as a Father who religiously takes his daughter to every appointment, I couldn’t be hypocritical and not get checked out myself.
So I went, had a physical, bloodwork, etc....all of it done. I got my eyes checked, blood glucose analysis, the full workup. It took about an hour to do, and I was so nervous that I even began to sweat. When it was over, the doctor told me that I was overall healthy, but I could stand to lose some weight. No major surprise there. He also told me that he was waiting on my blood panels to return from the lab and that once it was all complete he would have more information for me. Now, to say I was nervous at this point would have been an understatement. He told me it would take three to five days and I he would give me a call. Three to five days. Which was actually longer considering my appointment was on a Thursday and his office is closed on the weekend. So in reality, I was waiting SEVEN DAYS to find out if something was wrong with me.
Now, I have a pretty active imagination. Always have. So in the seven intervening days I developed such an intense anxiety for all things medical that it was severely affecting my ability to function. I work in retail, and let me tell you something: Try to sell 20k worth of something when in your head you are imagining how you are Patient Zero for a new strain of Super SARS and you will know the level of my anxiety for seven days. I began imagining symptoms, checking my body over and over for any lesions, swelling, rashes, boils, anything that may be the first indicators of some virulent plague ravaging my body. Keep in mind, I have not been sick in months. I haven’t had so much as a sniffle in a year. But once I went to the doctor my mind would not put to bed the notion that I harbored some dark plague that suddenly had received a secret code to ravage my body. I could barely eat, and sleep was out of the question.
It wasn’t until today, the FIFTH business day but my SEVENTH in waiting ( I am counting the day I went to the doctor. It’s 2017. WHY ARE THESE TESTS NOT INSTANT?!?!?!?) that my doctor finally calls and tells me I am fine. Slightly elevated cholesterol, but nothing a slight diet change and some good exercise couldn’t cure. HUGE WEIGHT LIFTED! Now I am sitting here at work trying to plan my next move. Because while on the phone I heard “You’re a little fat but otherwise ok,” in my head I heard “YOU ARE THE MACHIAVELLIAN SUPERBEING. GO CLIMB MOUNT EVEREST.
And so in conclusion, I just want to say I am glad I went to the doctor. Put a lot of concerns at peace and also superbly inflated my ego. I am not climbing Everest any time soon, but I am working to lose weight, be healthy, and live a longer, well informed life that will perhaps one day place me at the top of that mountain. Or just ensure I am here to walk my daughter down the isle. Both are great goals.

You were able to dispel the rumors by explaining about the security plan you were creating which helped explain your meetings with the captain, really the other engineers were just impressed that the captain remembered your name since he usually only worked with Scotty.
One o’clock came around and you were ready to go, the knock at your door showing that Jim was right on time. “You look lovely.” He said throwing in a wink.
“I’d say you do too, but you’re in a t-shirt and jeans.”
“Don’t forget the jacket, the leather makes me look rugged.” Shaking your head he led the way off the ship letting you go to the bar first and establishing yourself there, he would wait outside for a moment before walking in and checking the place out.
You sat and crossed your legs letting the dress ride up the smallest bit, Jim still hadn’t come in yet but there was someone openly staring from the other end of the bar. Shifting a bit you watched as he ordered another drink only breaking the gaze for a moment, others had approached you and taken the rejection well.
The signal this time was rushing off to the bathroom, from there the other person would make their way over and make sure that you left safely. No one had tried to push themselves on you and Jim still hadn’t entered the bar so you told the bartender to hold your drink and went to the bathroom to freshen up.
The lighting wasn’t the best but you touched up what makeup you had on ignoring the door opening and closing again, the person talking you couldn’t ignore though. “So you’re not here with anyone?”
“How would you know?”
The guy smirked blocking the way to the exit. “I’ve been watching, you’re either waiting for someone or looking for someone, so which is it?”
“Please just let me leave.”
“I think I’ll keep you.” He took a few steps towards you prompting you to move back, but the room was only so big and after just a few more your back was pressed firmly against the wall. “You’re really going to pretend like you didn’t wear that dress to get attention?”
“Leave me alone and you won’t get hurt.”
His laugh was malicious, almost primal enough that it made your skin crawl. “How are you going to hurt me?”
His hands were planted on either side of your head and he was pressing his body against yours. The hot breath on your skin causing your stomach to churn. “Like this.”
A swift knee to his groin and the guy was doubled over. “You bitch!” You’d given him a hard hit, but he still had enough energy to reach up and grab your neck. “I’ll teach you to do that to me.”
It was hard to breathe, the gasping sounds showing that you couldn’t swallow and your vision going blurry telling you that there was no blood supply to your brain. After a few moments you blacked out.
Waking up a few moments later you sputtered and cringed away from the hands on your body. “It’s okay! Y/N it’s okay, it’s Jim, I’ve got you.” He was carrying you bridal style and walking as quickly as he could to the ship. “Bones, I need you in the medbay.”
Breathing was still difficult and you had an audible wheeze but at least you weren’t unconscious anymore.
“Out of the way!” Jim yelled running you down the hallways of the Enterprise and depositing you on an empty bed, Bones was there a moment later asking what happened. “She was in the bathroom and some guy cornered her, he was choking her out when I got there.”
“She’s going to have some bruising and her throat will hurt but she should be fine. Give her a mask to help with the breathing and let her rest.”
A blanket was pulled over your body as the mask pushed air through your nostrils, Jim stood beside you trying to figure out what the best course of action was. “Scotty, meet me in the officer’s lounge.”
“What’s going on?”
Jim took a deep breath and explained everything. “I wanted you to know that she probably won’t be back in engineering for a few days.”
“You said she’s in medbay now?” Kirk nodded. “I should punch you right in your perfect jaw, you know that? Y/N is the closest thing I’ve got to a daughter and you used her like bait?!”
“That was her idea Scotty, I was there the entire time!”
“Not this time you weren’t! And what’s to say it won’t happen again?” Before he could even respond Scotty was rushing out of the room, he wasn’t as angry with Jim as he was worried about you, he would cool off eventually.
Jim went back to medbay and found that you were stirring. “You’re on the Enterprise, the plan didn’t go exactly like it should have.”
“What happened?” Your voice was raw and it hurt to talk.
“Bones, Y/N’s awake.” The communicator clicked off and Jim looked at you with sad eyes. “I wasn’t there when I should have been. I got caught talking to one of the crew members and by the time I got into the bar you were already in the bathroom, I went to check on you and I found you unconscious.”
“The guy?”
“Let’s just say he didn’t walk away without a few scratches.”
Bones ran in and asked how you were feeling right after telling you not to talk, he prodded the area around your throat as gently as he could but it was tender and painful anyway. “You’re going to have to rest your voice for a few days, no screaming at this guy or carrying on long conversations. No work either, you can barely hear each other yelling down in engineering.”
You tried to fight him on it, Scotty had only given you two days off, but there was no budging. Not even Jim was going to help you. “Just go relax for a few days, read a book or something. Captain’s orders.”
Bones rolled his eyes so hard you could practically hear it and said you were free to go.
“Let’s get some of that salve on your neck, it’ll help the bruising so maybe it’ll make it less painful too.” Jim led you through the hallways quickly so the marks didn’t get seen by everyone and as soon as you arrived at his room you could feel the tears finally coming. “Hey, it’s okay. You’re safe now, you know that you’re safe with me right?”
You nodded slightly wiping at the tears streaming down your cheeks. Jim took your hands in his rubbing circles over your knuckles.
“I won’t let anything else happen to you, I promise.” He waited for you to calm before applying the salve but it still hurt enough that you let a few more tears out. “You can stay here if you want tonight, I have a couch I can sleep on.”
Shaking your head you stood. “I’ll be fine.”
He watched as you left with your head held high, the bruising wasn’t completely gone but they were fading and by the time you got to your room there was just a light blue tinge to your skin. The door was locked, no one was going to get into your room without your express permission, but you still couldn’t sleep. When you finally did close your eyes all you saw was the bar over and over again.
Jumping out of bed you ran for the door unlocking it and scrambling out into the hallway as quickly as possible, tears streamed down your cheeks but you didn’t care.
“Whoa there lassie, shouldn’t you be resting?” Scotty moved over to calm you but saw the terror in your eyes. “Alright, I know just the thing. Come on.”
Walking into the officer’s lounge Scotty placed you on a stool and went to get two glasses. “What’s this?” You looked up and found Kirk and Bones at the other end drinking. “Are you alright?”
“I found her in the hallway, this whole thing’s really messed her up.” Scotty was not going to let this go. “Not that someone should have even been put in that position in the first place-”
You reached out and touched his arm getting his attention, when you had it though you just shook your head side to side, the plans were your idea and it had been stupid to leave the bar for a secluded space without Jim there. “I was scared, not his fault.”
The glass pushed over to you was filled halfway with brown liquid strong enough to make your eyes water, but after a few sips there wasn’t anything keeping you awake.

Docking at Starbase 384 the crew was rearing to get off the ship, everyone was surrounding the door waiting for it to open and let them out. You stood near the rear of the group trying not to worry too much about the plan, it was just a test run anyway.
Getting the feeling that someone was staring you looked up and met Jim’s bright blue gaze, he nodded once and turned back to listen to Sulu. You left with everyone else finding the bar Jim had picked, once again you wore a dress trying to attract the attention and immediately getting a drink.
Within a few moments someone approached you asking to buy you a refill but they took the no easily enough and left you alone. It took a bit, but finally there was someone drunk enough to try and bargain with you.
“I said no.” Shoving the guy away he just laughed drunkenly. “Go away.”
Still he stayed trying to continue asking your name and what you did, it was just annoying. Finally you found Jim, he was looking away from you so you signalled the bartender and asked to send a drink over to him.
That was the cue, once the glass was in Jim’s hand he sauntered over and “introduced” himself asking if he could return the favor. It worked almost instantly and you gave a sigh of relief. “Thank you.” Clinking the glasses together you sat and talked to give the air of a first time meeting.
“So all we have to do with that one is make sure there’s someone else around that knows what it means.” Jim gave a half shrug. “Sounds easy enough, there are enough officers that would be willing.”
You were only half paying attention, the stubble along his jaw was captivating and trying to pull away from it was like trying to unglue something. Deciding that you should say anything you made a noncommittal noise and finished your drink. “Have you heard about Shaylah and Bones?”
“I try not to dig into people’s personal lives too much.” It was obvious he had thought that up the second you started the sentence because his eyes went wide after he was finished. “Did you say ‘and Bones’?”
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure they’re on a date right now.”
“Do you know where?”
It was another bar across the base, being a first date they didn’t want any of the crew to stumble in on them and start to interfere. But being captain meant you could do what you wanted, so Jim grabbed your hand and ran the two of you out.
It wasn’t a long walk and it was fun joking about whatever you saw, but when Kirk let go of your hand you felt a chill. He led the way into the bar and found two seats at the bar ordering two drinks when asked, you had a perfect view of the couple and they couldn’t see you unless they turned to look.
“Wanna make this interesting?” Kirk took a sip, he looked devious. “Bones looks smitten but I’m not sure your friend is all about it yet.”
“Well that’s not fair, I have the advantage over you.”
His eyes flicked towards yours. “What does that mean?”
“I know exactly how she feels! You really think she hasn’t said something about it to me?”
“Alright,” His tongue darted out between his lips wetting the top one. “Then we bet on which one makes the first move for a kiss.”
You couldn’t stop the laugh. “For not being interested in other people’s business you’re pretty invested in this.”
“Bones is a friend, I’m interested in his love life. Especially because he doesn’t have one!”
So you watched, having forgotten about which side you were betting and instead focusing on the date happening in front of you. A few drinks in Bones finally looked over and saw the two of you causing his smile to disappear entirely.
Kirk have a sheepish wave as both of you got as close to the bar top as possible, Shaylah didn’t follow his gaze to see you which made it easy just to watch Bones sit there annoyed. “He’s going to yell at me for that.”
“You should ask if they kiss at the end when he does.”
When the check came for Bones’ date Jim paid for your drinks and grabbed your hand again, the two of you ran as far as you could from the bar to pretend like you weren’t there when they left which was really just for Shaylah’s benefit as Bones already saw you.
There was a group hanging around the docking station of the Enterprise who saw you approach with the captain, and with you wearing a dress and him not in his uniform it definitely looked like you were coming back from a date.
“We’re here until tomorrow,” He said getting to your room. “We could always try another plan before we leave.”
“Alright, pick me up when you’re ready?” He nodded and went to leave. “Jim, wait! I’m betting it happens when they get back.”
His lips turned up in a smirk. “You’re on.”
“Can’t even let me have one day to myself, can you?”
Bones, predictably, was going off on Jim in the officer’s lounge. “Technically you weren’t alone.”
“And neither were you! Weren’t you on a date too?”
“What? No! I told you about the safety thing Y/N is working on, we were testing it out.”
But he wasn’t buying it, Bones crossed his arms instead. “Sure, I’ll bet you’re going to test these out with her as long as you can too.”
“As a matter of fact-”
“Damnit Jim, Y/N’s a nice girl, don’t you dare play with her like that.”
Kirk narrowed his eyes. “Is this because she’s your girlfriend’s friend?”
“It’s because she’s nice and doesn’t deserve to be one of your toys. And Scotty would do some weird Scottish death grip on you if he found out.” Being friends Bones was able to talk like that to the captain. “Maybe that’s just the Vulcans...I don’t know. Scotty would have your ass.”
“I’m not going to play around with her Bones.” This was the reputation he had made for himself, but James Tiberius Kirk had learned a lot in the past few years. “I actually enjoy hanging out with her, like there’s no reason to not be myself.”
“Then ask her on a real date! Not the fakes ones you’ve already planned.”
“Speaking of real dates….”
Shaylah strolled into your room with a huge smile on her face, you were in the middle of working but you couldn’t help but smile with her. “How’d it go?”
“It was amazing, we had a few drinks and some food and we talked the entire time! He got a little irritated towards the middle but he said there was just some guy staring at us that he didn’t like.” No mention of you then, your friend went on talking until she got to the part where they parted and Bones kissed her cheek. “He didn’t want to be too forward, but we’re going out again at our next stop.”
Your communicator rang and just as it opened you heard Jim’s voice. “Pay up Y/N.”
He sounded giddy, like he was smiling as he said it. “I’m with a friend right now can’t talk!”
Shaylah didn’t let it go just because you hung up, she stared until she figured you weren’t going to talk. “Seriously? How long have you guys been dating?”
“We’re not!”
“He shows up at your room, you immediately make me leave, Leonard says you guys are working on something together, and now he’s calling you about a bet!” You weren’t sure if she was impressed or angry. “Is that why he came over to get that creep away from you?”
“We’re not dating! Yeah we’re working on a safety protocol for when the ship is docked but that’s it!”
She still thought you were lying. “So what’s with the bet.”
“We may have been at the same bar and bet on whether you guys would kiss at the end of your date.”
You watched as Shaylah’s mouth fell open. “Y/N, if you had told me I would have helped you win!”
“I can’t rig the bet!”
“I wanted him to kiss me, I would have prefered it actually.” She spent a moment smiling to herself before turning back to you. “I think you like him.”
“Who?”
“Captain Kirk, who obviously likes you too or he wouldn’t be snooping around with you.”
You held up a hand. “That was his idea, not mine!”
It was another hour or so of joking with each other before Shaylah left for her own room, thinking for a bit you pulled out your communicator and called Jim. “Kirk.” He answered.
“It’s Y/N.”
“Oh, you mean the one who owes me a bet?”
Again, he sounded like he was smiling, was that normal? “The very same, what did you have in mind?”
“I’ll think on it and let you know.”
The next morning you met Shaylah and some of your other colleagues in the mess for breakfast but they got quiet as Jim approached the table. “Good morning, Y/N we’ll meet at one today.” With a nod he left and Shaylah shot you a knowing look.

Changing quickly you ran off to the captain’s quarters and knocked twice, when the door opened he ushered you inside and offered a chair.
“Lift your leg up here.” Kirk sat opposite you and motion for your foot to rest on his thigh. “Unless you want to do it, I don’t have to.”
Normally cocky and sure of himself Jim Kirk was suddenly transformed into a babbling teenager afraid to overstep boundaries. “It’s fine, you’ll be able to see them all anyway.”
The bruises had formed around where each of the creep’s fingers had dug into your skin, you wanted them gone as soon as possible. Kirk’s touch was gentle as he took the salve and rubbed it into your skin, it immediately dried and you could see the bruise fade with it. “Are you sure you’re alright? I can talk to Scotty and find someone to cover your shift.”
“It’s nothing that hasn’t happened before.”
“What?”
It was part of being a girl, at least that was what you had come to realize. That dress hadn’t helped though and as a result you would probably give it to Shaylah. “Bars on starbases are filled with travellers who haven’t see women in a while, they tend to act like predators.”
“How is that fun?”
The irony wasn’t lost on either of you, Kirk had been the same way once. “Sometimes it’s worth it to meet someone who isn’t like that and that you can trust to be with. Other times, it’s like this.”
“Why hasn’t anyone said anything?”
“What would you do captain? Give us all chaperones?”
“I would make sure you were all safe! I care more about my crew than you think.”
He was right, sometimes it just wasn’t safe. “I never said you didn’t captain.”
“Call me Jim. And I’m putting you in charge of a plan to make sure everyone stays safe, if it ends up that chaperones are the best course of action than so be it.” The door slid up and Mr. Spock took a look at the two of you. “Damnit Spock, don’t you knock?”
“I should go.” Taking your foot down you made sure to straighten the uniform before saying hello to the Vulcan and racing off towards engineering.
“Captain, a relationship with one of the crew would be unwise.”
Kirk looked annoyed. “Yeah, yeah I know. Which is why I’m happy to tell you that you’re wrong because that was not a relationship thing.”
“Then why were you holding her leg?”
“I was-she had bruises I was helping her out.”
You spent the next few days working as much as you could, whether in engineering or on the safety plan the captain had asked you to do, but after a week Scotty shook his head. “Is this the third shift you’ve taken from someone else? When do you sleep lass?”
“Well if the engine goes I won’t be sleeping, will I?”
“That’s a fair point but that doesn’t mean other people don’t need to work too. Go, get out of here, enjoy the next two days off.”
He was waving you out of the area and you just stared. “What am I supposed to do with two days?”
“Find something or someone to pass the time with. Now get.”
You tried to argue but Scotty just pointed to the door, he wouldn’t hear another word. So you left for the mess hall hoping to get a snack and instead running into Bones head on. “I’m so sorry!” You called grabbing at the items on the floor.
“It’s no problem Y/N, actually I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something.” Setting the un-ruined items on a table Bones grabbed some napkins to wipe the uniforms off. “You’re friend, Shaylah, I wanted to ask her on a date but I can’t seem to find her anywhere. Is there any way you could help me out?”
Of course Shaylah would get another date, she was beautiful and personable. “Sure, I’ll let her know to come find you.”
“Thanks, also Kirk wanted to talk to you about some safety plan you were working on? He’s up in the bridge now.”
Taking the turbolift you waited for the doors to open, only to find Mr. Spock standing there staring at you. “Permission to enter the bridge?” Spock nodded once and stepped out of the way. “Captain, Dr. McCoy said you wanted to see me.”
“Y/N, yes. How is that plan coming along?”
“I have a few ideas, I’m not sure if they work well though I would need to test them out.”
Kirk nodded. “I’ll stop by later and we can discuss it further.”
Leaving the bridge it was like no one had even known you were there, of course the captain had to stay professional while he was in the chair but you had at least expected a smile or something.
Getting to your room you tidied up the best you could/ Clean clothes got hung up, dirty clothes went in the hamper, shoes in the closet, random papers got filed away, the papers you needed stayed out, and your bed got bade. Everything was in order, and in perfect time because someone was knocking at your door.
“Shaylah,” Your friend strode in looking frantic. “What’s wrong?”
“Did you talk to Dr. McCoy today?”
“Oh yeah, I ran into him. He wanted to talk to you about something.”
She closed her eyes and breathed deeply. “I don’t know what to do, it’s bad Y/N, really bad. I actually like him!”
“How terrible?”
“Can you even date someone on the same ship as you?”
You nodded, it had been on your mind once or twice. “Commander Spock and Lt. Uhura are seeing each other.”
She rambled on for another minute before another knock sounded, Captain Kirk was smiling as it slid up seeing both of you. “Shaylah, didn’t know I’d be seeing you so soon again.”
“Captain.” She gave you a questioning look.
“Kirk and I actually have to go over something right now, I’ll talk to you later.”
She left just as Kirk walked in turning around to give you a thumbs up. Closing the door on her you turned to find Jim looking around the small space. “So what were the ideas you had Y/N?”
You talked for hours about the plans you had going over every detail you could and relishing in the fact that he let you finish a complete thought before speaking. “Like I said earlier, we would need to test them out and make sure nothing was wrong with executing the plans.”
“I can tell you’ve spent a lot of time on this.” It wasn’t exactly praise but you would take it. “We’re getting to the next base in two days, think you’re up for running a plan then?”
I woke up about an hour before my alarm, but since my alarm was set 2.5 hours later than normal I didn’t feel as bad about it.
Sitting in the doctor’s office now. Nothing big, just the yearly physical.
So I'm quite healthy. The only issues are a couple of vitamin deficiencies which are easily remedied. I had lunch with my wife at a local place. They serve a tasty Italian sausage on a bun. The potato soup of the day was quite good also.
I was going to get my hair cut, but my salon of choice is closed during their usual daytime hours until the tenth. Pout.
We have booked tickets for our summer trip with my family. Woohoo! We are also looking at a possible last minute weekend excursion this weekend. If it goes through, that will be fun.
Well, no last minute weekend trip. Oh well.
My wife is having a problem at work. She’s caught in the middle of someone asking her to do something, and someone else saying that it would be illegal. It is stressing her out badly, and there doesn’t seem to be anything I can do to help.
That sucks.
How much do I love my wife? So much I’m getting up at my usual time to go to work on my day off to take her car for service. Pay attention guys. This is love.
I would stay up and finish The Colony, but it is having sound issues and they are ruining the experience. Good night all.
