This character was formerly written 懷, a combination of 忄heart/feeling and 褱 an uncommon kanji meaning “to carry in the bosom or the sleeve.” Here 褱 is a phonetic element signaling the on’yomi while also lending its own connotation of “to carry.” Combined with 忄 this gives “something carried in the heart,” a reference to “yearning.” Its meanings of “nostalgia/fondness” come from association. 懐 is also used to refer to the bosom/breast pocket.
