So I wanna do an in-depth Foucauldian meta on kinnporsche but as a teaser lemme get into the panopticon and predictions for ep 6.

So the panopticon is the embodiment of Foucault’s identification of modern society as a space in which every single person can assume they are under observation AT ALL TIMES.

Think ‘Big Brother is Watching You’. Even if you don’t KNOW that you are being ACTUALLY observed in any given moment, there is ALWAYS the possibility that you are being monitored and that any action, no matter how private, can be used against you.

This colonizes your subconscious to the point that you self-monitor even your own thoughts and emotions due to the implicit assumption that they can be discovered by those in power who wish to control you.

This is ever-increasing in our modern tech-savvy society - you could be recorded at any moment, overheard at any moment, etc.

Foucault’s classic example is a prison complex in which a guard tower is stationed at the center - the (theoretical) guard can always (theoretically) see into the cell of every prisoner BUT the prisoners cannot see the guard and do not know whether the guard is actually there. Nonetheless, the very real possibility results in control over the prisoners’ bodies and minds.

Now, take a look at the prison panopticon:

And check out the lobby of the first family’s home:

I mean. Come ON.

Combined with the dialogue in this scene, which is about how the bodyguards are required to be stationed there and not allowed to leave...I almost have to imagine the show makers have read Discipline and Punish because really, now.

So as far as this impacts Kinn and Porsche’s relationship:

They are always being observed, always being watched, and I think for Kinn especially, having grown up in this life and having so many expectations on him has made him internalize this to the point where he is ALWAYS subconsciously monitoring himself and his own feelings and squashing those that would Not Be Approved Of.

Notice that the first time he lets a little loose is at Yok’s bar. He reveals some of his inner turmoil and true personality to Porsche on the pier. He doesn’t hide his affection. (Thanks @dramaism for this perfect image)

He caves to Porsche not at home, but at the hotel the diamond auction is at.

When they’re back home, he’s always trying to reassert his power, diminish Porsche’s growing importance to him, deny that what’s happening between them is happening. I don’t think it’s a coincidence this is happening where and when it is. Kinn’s dad’s involvement--and warning to not get caught up with Porsche-- only validates this. This scene, as others have pointed out, isn’t Kinn telling the truth. It’s him trying to convince himself (and those implicitly watching) that it’s the truth.

Episode 6 should be fascinating because both Kinn and Porsche are suddenly removed from the panopticon completely. They know (for the first time, perhaps, specifically for Kinn) that they are not being monitored.

This means that a mental barrier is removed as well, in that they are not required to self-monitor or self-censor, which is a huge point of tension in their relationship normally.

I think for Porsche this is less of an issue. We clearly see in the early episodes that he does NOT realize he’s entered the panopticon and readily flouts those rules, though he is obviously learning.

But for Kinn, to be removed from that all at once...he’s either going to:

1) desperately attempt to maintain appearances, well aware that they will have to reenter the panopticon at some point and if he gives in now it will be even more impossible than before to hide his affection for Porsche,

2) break like the desperate motherfucker he is and be on his knees begging for Porsche in a hot millisecond

3) pinging wildly between options 1 and 2

Either way, I can’t wait.
