Yellena James is an artist/illustrator residing in Portland, OR. Preferring pens, inks, and acrylics she combines complex abstract forms into dazzling images that take on lives of their own. Currently on view at Stephanie Chefas Projects in Portland, Oregon is artist Yellena James’s solo exhibition, “Origin.”
Through the use of immersive color and expert technique, James continues to navigate a vast world of her own creation. To behold each work is to likewise envelope yourself in a seemingly infinite expanse of color, image, and detail. Each piece transcends its imaginative underpinnings to take on a vivid and life-like dimension, as though the artist herself is a mere visitor in this fully-realized dimension.
"My latest works explore the origin of living things, real and imagined, pondering the true source of sentience and existence," says James. "From a pool of primordial particles and varying elements, bonding and evolving, moving together or pulling apart, somehow an imaginary ecosystem comes to life. I attempt to capture the instance of inception, and freeze it as though pressing pause in the middle of a chemical reaction, and I wonder if these lifeforms are forced into existence by their own needs and desires or the needs and desires of the forces themselves.”
