GUS DAPPERTON: YELLOW AND SUCH ALBUM REVIEW
Rating: 7/10
Yellow and Such is Gus Dapperton’s four song EP that is sure to gain appreciation from fans of indie and alternative music. Yellow and Such opens with the lead single “I’m Just Snacking”, a fun song that is whimsical at first listen- and still as delightful after being replayed. “I’m Just Snacking” flows freely, and it perfectly sums up Dapperton’s style as an artist, which is light, fun, and retro. “Ms Glum and the Pursuit of Falling” is practically reminiscent of The Kink’s Sunny Afternoon in instrumentation, with its guitar and bass instrumentation and vocal styling. Dapperton creatively uses both the higher and lower registers of his voice, to creatively tell a story that is backed by shimmering synthesizers and steady percussion. “Gum, Toe, and Sole” opens with a doo-wop vocal intro, which is then supported by guitar and drums to add dimension to the song. Dapperton’s vocals are rather falsetto like on “Gum, Toe, and Sole,” and may remind listeners of other vocalists like BØRNS. Yellow and Such closes with “The Fool (As told by Simonez Dega)” is the most eclectic song on the album, and mixes many tones and styles, in a manner quite like Tame Impala or Tender. The song is an immersive soundscape built with Dapperton and Dega’s vocals, along with smooth guitar and bass instrumentation, which give the track depth. Yellow and Such is a proper introduction for new listeners to Dapperton’s style, and it is sure to bring him more appreciation from those who already know him. Dapperton is definitely one to watch, and his unique and original style is making a way for him.
