i’ve realized that at the end of season one when jackie calls out the others after doomcoming and says something along the lines of: “so we just have orgies now?” and ben reacts with shock, she never specifies that travis was involved and at the centre of this, so ben probably thought for the rest of his life that half his soccer team had an orgy with just each other. and had no hesitation believing that.

"Pentheus Pursued by the Maenads" or Travis pursued by the Yellowjackets

The Wilderness is Dionysus in his most primal form and when the girls ate Jackie while imagining themselves at a Greek feast, it was like them becoming possessed by the Wilderness and becoming its maenads. When they haunt Nat, it's like they become possessed again and go into an ecstatic frenzy. The maenad parallel becomes even more blatant when they get high on shroom stew and try to start an orgy with Travis which quickly flips into them hunting him while hallucinating a stag. Mythically, the maenads would work themselves up into a heightened state where they didn't recognize their own minds then partake in dances, orgies, and ritualistic dismembering of animals. The Yellowjackets were frenzied, insane, and become something else during their hunts. When they're snapped out of it, they legit are shocked that they almost killed Travis. There's at least two Greek myths where Dionysus causes young women to go insane only to come to after killing a loved one.
