Reflection, realization, reunion, and an important step along a better path. 4.56 spoilers, wc 854. Directly follows Blind to the Dark.

“Win or lose, the path you walk leads only to oblivion.”

It was the sort of statement that should have angered and terrified her. It might have even made her laugh, if for no other reason than to dull the pain of hearing her greatest fear spoken aloud. If given ample time to think, to recover, to consider anything beyond the cold and creeping suspicion of her own death by Zenos’ blade, Alyx would have said and done far more.

For regardless of whether or not she had actually traveled from the battlefield or merely dreamed so with her final shred of consciousness, she finally faced the owner of the voice that had haunted her and her friends for what felt like ages. Finally she had a chance to grab him by the front of his gilded robes and demand an explanation, and yet she stood agape among the blinding map of the stars unable to act before the vision was over.

“The better path leads you here,” he said. These were the words that stayed with her, though she no longer heard them for their literal meaning. The concept of the place and the speaker were nothing compared to what they meant. There was a better path.

A path to the First. A path to her friends. A path away from Calamity, she hoped, away from ruin--her star’s, and her own.

Without meaning to, Alyx had taken the first steps upon that path already. A better path had apparently been one to lead her away from dying at the border of Ala Mhigo, as unbelievable as such a thing remained despite the eventual explanation. A better path was one she had never once considered possible.

And why shouldn't it be, she wondered, somewhere in the dark cool haze between dreaming and awake. What was one more impossibility? What manner of impossible things had she not yet faced and conquered?

“Please… forge a different path,” Arbert implored her in her memory, though this time without sorrow or defeat. “Seize a better fate.”

Alyx had refused the Warrior of Darkness once, she would not do so again.

She needn't resign herself to oblivion, nor to unhappiness. There was hope. There was a better path, and it was hers to take. Despite her defeat and the wounds within and without, the thought alone was enough. It was enough to remind her just who and what she was, and what she was capable of. It was enough to know the path that had brought her home, and would lead her home again and again, if she only allowed herself to follow it.

It had already taken her home. It had already taken her to the sight of dark wooden beams and the smell of candle wax and clean linens. Unknown days or hours or mere moments from battle she awoke in Ishgard and found herself home as soon as she saw the look of relief on Aymeric’s face, as soon as she heard his voice and the rush of his footfalls. Her whole body felt like a living bruise, but when he came to her bedside she crushed herself into his embrace. He told her everything that had happened and though his words were not all without darkness, all of the despair of her own world and any others seemed to evaporate from her shoulders. He spoke of hope and he spoke of reprieve in the midst of war and over and over her heart rang in reminder that she could walk a different path. Slowly the shackles were weightless around her wrists and the leash lifted from her neck, and had she the strength to stand she swore she could have stood half a fulm taller.

Alyx stood taller, even while still in bed, even while behind her eyelids she saw the sky cut open by an icy blue wound leaking light from its edges. The threats of the future stretched ever onward but she saw clearly, as if for the first time, she needn’t merely accept her fate. The very thought was enough to give her the courage to bid Aymeric stay beside her a bit longer, to speak a bit longer, to be near. Stay he did, even as the bells dragged on though only felt like seconds. It was more than enough to remind her that while the pull of duty was ever present, she needn’t resign herself to a life only clad in its chains. With its call incessant, eventually they both knew Aymeric must answer, despite every kiss that told him stay, stay, stay --

“My friend, my love, my Warrior of Light,” there was a smile in his voice though very little breath, “Would that I could remain.”

She knew, as always, but was braver now. Her voice was a murmur of emotion scarcely contained by weakness: “Just one thing before you go.”

Anything. Everything. He pledged her all without any sound. When he took her hand, she smiled.

“Ask me again,” she said, and forged her better path. “I'm ready now."

I had a mcfucking BREAKTHROUGH last night re: the plot pieces I've been stuck on with this story I've been working on for the last few weeks. I'd spent several days stewing over it, unable to figure out how the pieces I had actually fit together into a proper plot, and it was driving me crazy because I knew there had to be a way to string it all together. but last night I think I found the missing piece. I made some notes very late last night about how this piece fit into some of the gaps, and then tonight I rambled at my brother about it for a while while we were in our walk, and. and. and I've just written 1700 words of plot outline that works so well to connect these previously-disparate chunks of story into a coherent narrative. and I cannot begin!! to explain!!! how excited I am about this!!!! I have spent so much time, in the last few years especially, trying to figure out how to really stitch together a real plot for my own work and I'm just RIDICULOUSLY hype at how this is shaping up. my project for NaNo this past November was a big step up in terms of plot quality for me but I think this is genuinely another huge step up from there and holy shit am I excited about it, you guys. I'm going to have so much fun writing this book!!! and it's only the first in a much larger plan!!!
