This is sort of a random question.. but what qualities do you appreciate in a nurse? I'm sure you've been around a lot of nurses good and bad. I'm hopefully going to be in nursing school this fall and I want to know how what qualities are good to have/work on :) Also. CONGRATS on graduating!!
Hmm, well, I actually haven't had a ton of exposure to nurses because on my hospital rotations I worked pretty directly with doctors, but here's some things I really liked about a particular nurse that I worked with a lot and who I thought was really great:
1. If she didn't understand why a doctor did something a certain way, she tried to learn from it. They didn't complain or say their way was better; they would ask the doctor why they made that decision or they'd read up on the situation. Just like doctors, nurses need to be continual learners.
2. She knew the doctors she worked with--their quirks and eccentricities. Like what type of instruments they preferred for a procedure or that they liked to refer to X cardiologist over Y for certain patients. So she was always half a step ahead, and it always made things run smoother.
3. She kept calm in stressful situations. She might sigh and break down afterward, but she was totally cool during the crapstorm.
4. She was always sweet to her patients, and she rarely said snarky comments about them after they left. She got to know them and knew their situations and could sympathize with most of them.
That's all I can think of for now, but if you're hungry for more, Dr. Cranquis has a great list of qualities he like in nurses, so check it out.
