Wow. Where to begin? It has been several months since I have wanted to post this review and a great part of me just wanted to leave it be and let the awful experience I had die in my past, but a larger part of me knew that it wasn't right to keep people in the dark about the truth of the Yew Wah Foundation. Yew Wah is part of a Hong Kong foundation the is ran by Dr. Betty (who, from what I understand, never went to school for that doctorate, it was an honorary one). It is a smaller section of the more prestigious Yew Chung Foundation. Yew Chung schools cater to actual international students with foreign passports and Yew Wah caters to extremely wealthy Chinese students (especially the Guangzhou campus). Facilities: On the outside, the campus looks very nice (when it isn't raining). But if you were to take a closer look, you would see what a couple of years of constant rain will do to an open-air campus. There is mold all over the building. Inside stairwells, classrooms, the cafeteria, the hallways, and even the bathrooms are covered in unsightly, and unhealthy mold. The school makes sure to cover it up in whatever way possible before there is a scheduled tour or there is some sort of parent event. They will use paint or even tape up regular white paper to cover the mold. Of course, this is only the start of a much bigger problem, and that is structural integrity. Many pieces of walls and ceilings have collapsed in on itself due to the poor and hasty construction of the school. It is obvious that there was poor planning involved with it's construction as they didn't take into account the large amount of rain Guangzhou receives every year. Poor janitorial staff are forced to sweep massive puddles of rain off the walkways nearly everyday, even while it is raining. The classrooms are decent and the primary side is equipped with smartboards, but as they continue to accept more and more students, the classrooms are getting smaller and smaller. The gym is of a good size, but it also acts as a place for so many events that it is difficult to utilize it appropriately. It also don't help that there are leaks in the ceiling that allow rain to come down into the middle of it. Rain freely pours into stairwells, making it very dangerous to traverse them. Many students and staff have taken falls, so far no one has been seriously injured thankfully. Admissions and Academic Integrity: Admissions at Yew Wah is a joke. Right now, admissions falls under the marketing department, which definitely seems like a conflict of interest when you think about it. They will tell you that every student must complete an entrance exam before being admitted into the school, and this is true. What they don't tell you is that the students are also allowed their smartphones and are completely unobserved when they take the exam. I know this personally because I saw this happen myself on multiple occasions. This is a good stepping stone when we talk about academic integrity. While they do take the CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) seriously, students will find that their progress reports will not actually reflect what they earned in class as the school office will alter the grades before they are printed. I am aware that it happened in my classes. Of course, the school will deny this, and toss it up as a "technical issue". Many students at Yew Wah will do absolutely nothing in school and won't even attempt to learn; making them a burden on the teacher and the class. This is mostly due to the fact that their parents are multi-millionaires and they know that school doesn't really matter to their well-being. The Staff: Overall, the staff are very professional and are undervalued at every turn. Although, I must admit that it was quite a shock when a new group of staff were hired and it seemed that in order to get hired it was required that you be a practicing Christian. The school is technically a Christian foundation, but the way they operate proves otherwise. More on that later. Living conditions: Do you like being several miles away from any kind of civilization? Do you like the idea that you are secluded from the world? Do you enjoy having virtually no access to proper public transportation? Are you a fan of be dangerously far away from an emergency health center? Do you like paying money for an internet service that rarely works? If you said yes to all of these questions, then working at Yew Wah will be a breeze. DON'T GO IF YOU ARE SINGLE! There is virtually nothing for you to do except hang out with people who have families. The apartments are large and usually well-furnished, but they do not let new staff know about how isolated the school is. There is virtually nothing out there, and if you want to do anything simple, like buy groceries, you will need to buy an electric motorbike. There are no shopping centers, barbers, or even proper restaurants. There is ONE restaurant, but it is attached to a hotel that will definitely kill your pocketbook and the food is awful. More importantly, there are no hospitals nearby, or at the very least convenient. If you were to have a medical problem, it could take an hour before an ambulance could get to you. The school does have a dedicated "driver" to get you to a hospital, but you have to roll the dice on whether or not he picks up the phone. Also, snakes and rats are a thing. The Management: Oh boy. What a nightmare this is. So the first school year started without a hitch. Chris Connellan was the principal, and did his best to organize the budding school. This was no easy task and those above him didn't make it any easier, especially Tin Ip. Tin Ip is a superintendent of the foundation and after a new principal was hired and left the day before school started that year (2015-2016), he stepped in. As the acting principal, Tin Ip was largely ineffective. He proceeded to use bully and fear tactics to get his way. He even tried to fire teachers, and was almost successful until they got lawyers. He did fire a librarian for doing her job because a parent complained to him. Without any investigation or disciplinary actions, he did a wholesale termination of her contract. In the end, she did lawyer up and the school settled out of court for a very large sum of money. It became very apparent that the school does not care about its teachers after the course of one year. The management labeled the older staff as "negative" and spread that to the new staff to encourage even more isolation. Slowly, the newer staff realized that there were genuine concerns and that they had been lied to. The HR department is probably the best department that the school has, but even they are told to propagate lies on the behalf of the school. Many teachers were told that after they sign a two-year contract, that the gratuity benefit would rise from 11.11% to 20% on the completion of another contract. This was a lie. In fact, teachers saw a decrease in the gratuity benefit from 11.11% to 10%. Their excuse was to be on a more level playing field with the local staff. However, they refuse to raise the local staff's wages whatsoever. The new management seem to be perfectly happy to be yes men for Tin Ip. Tin Ip made the lives of teachers a living nightmare. This is not an exaggeration. Teachers saw a decline in physical, emotional, and mental health during their stint with Yew Wah. If you enjoy being mismanaged, undervalued, and constantly in fear for your job, then Yew Wah might be the place for you. Don't say you weren't warned. The Curriculum: The school follows the IGCSE model in the upper levels. This is virtually ineffective since many of the students cannot grasp many of the lessons taught, especially English courses. Other Yew Wah campuses are different as they promote higher learning and only accept students with some command of the English language, but in Guangzhou that does not happen. It will be interesting to see what universities the graduates actually get into. Let's not forget, the grades they get don't actually matter since they will be flubbed in the end anyway. Discipline: Nonexistent. Carrying on. Oh? You want me to give you an example? Here's one. A student forced another student to drink his own urine and NOTHING was done. Need another? A student physically assaults a teacher and NOTHING was done. One more? Several students consistently do nothing or straight up lie to their teachers and NOTHING gets done. There is a discipline committee that is supposed to keep order, but in the end, Tin Ip reverses any decision made and life continues on. Safety: Other than the treacherous hallways and stairwells, the school is actually a pretty safe place. Seeing how it is out in the middle of nowhere, possesses an unsettling amount of security guards, and surrounded by a wall that most prisons wold be happy with, it is safe. The Package: Yew Wah does pay more than most international schools in the Guangzhou area. There are only a few that top it. The pay, insurance, and living quarters are definitely adequate. Let's be honest though, many would consider that "blood money" after what they had been through. Don't believe me? Out of all of the foreign staff that were hired, only THREE stayed on to continue work. Everyone else left or in the case of two people, terminated. IT IS NOT WORTH IT! Also, the package means little when you are not even allowed to take medical leave for physical therapy or to go to a dentist. Professional Development: It is possible to receive PD. However, the benefit isn't much and it is likely you will pay out of pocket for most of it. Conclusion: I could go on and on about how I personally was lied to and mistreated by this school and its administration, but that would accomplish very little. Instead, I would like you to consider what has been written before and take mental notes. THIS IS NOT A PLACE TO DEVELOP A CAREER. Yew Wah will literally claim your health and sense of integrity. There has been no darker time in my life, than when I worked at this school. I would breakdown emotionally on a daily basis and I cannot think of a time where I drank as much as I did. If you are considering applying to this institution, you will be inviting the worst moments possible into your life. If you are a parent, please consider a school that will actually provide a meaningful education to your child. The teachers at Yew Wah are professionals, but they are hampered by an inadequate administration and a curriculum to laugh at. This is not designed to be a flame piece or an attack for what they did. This is simply the truth. Recently, I found a blog where you can find out more about the school and the truths behind it at: http://yewwahtruth.tumblr.com/ Good luck on finding a school that is right for you! Thank you for reading and God Bless.
