Wing Sang Building is the oldest building in Chinatown established in 1889. It was named after Yip Sang (1845-1927), a businessman and community leader. As a businessman he started the Wing Sang Company, which provided labour contracting for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and import/export business.
Later he helped establish the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver, the Chinese Board of Trade of Vancouver and Life Governor of the Vancouver General Hospital. These organizations defended the community from racism and was the community hub for all Chinese citizens.
Now the Wing Sang Building is home to a private art collection and can be viewed by appointment only.
