Hi, I was wondering what your thoughts on non-Indigenous people playing the didgeridoo are? I have seen a few buskers in Melbourne that play them and are of Asian appearance, if they are non-Indigenous people as I assume is it okay for them to do so? My initial thoughts were that it was not okay for them to use an instrument so linked with Aboriginal culture, when that culture has been so repressed, shamed, and massacred in Australia and use it for personal gain. Thanks in advance.

No, it isn't okay for non-Indigenous people to play the yirdaki. It's only okay for non-Indigenous people to play the yirdaki if they have permission from people within the Indigenous community/elders. This is one of the key aspects of taking part in a respectful and appropriate cultural exchange and/or just simply respecting culture. I have stated this numerous times before. Permission. Is. A. Must.

same anon whose brother was doing the didgeridoo class at school- apparently today the teacher actually said that he has been told not to do it by aboriginal australians, and he ignores it.

Oh wow. A classic example of white people completely ignoring the wishes of Indigenous peoples and being disrespectful and KNOWING they’re being that way. Also the fact that he’s even talking about being told not to do it? I’m so sorry you have to experience people like that..
