JUST-A-BAND SORRY FOR THE DELAY
JUST A BAND-SORRY FOR THE DELAY.
This past weekend, witnessed what many Just-A-Band fans had been anxiously waiting for, their third studio album aptly named “Sorry for The Delay”. Having given the fans a taste of what was coming the previous weekend at the listening party at Goethe Institute, everyone came pumped expecting a great show. One thing is for sure,Just-A-Band NEVER disappoints promising to showcase their new material and gems from the previous albums, they hit their stage in colourful costumes ready to “apologize” to their fans backed by an amazing band. Not even the rain could deter the fans who danced and sang to the awesome music from the guys and their superb band. In fact, the crowd demanded for more clearly not getting enough, leading to Blinky Bill jokingly claiming “money has been poured” . The night was capped when Sarah Mitaru joined in singing the amazing “Probably for Lovers” and the crowd joined in to sing along proving again Kenyans do appreciate their own. Dj Sugar Cubes was next to provide the the trip way back with jams from Kalamashaka and a host of other artistes from back in the day. (When was the last time you heard Hardstone's “Uhiki”? )
The album itself isn't your everyday CD as we are accustomed to but its a card that slides into your wallet just like an ATM card. Technology and innovation clearly are the strong forte for the guys who are deemed “Africa's super-nerdy Electronic Music/Art collective ”. The dropcards are easy to use, load the unique code onto the website and voila, album ready for download.
The story in the alum booklet reads like a Sun Ra afro-futurist treatise,on how it has been three years since they released their last studio album and how after some really deep sleep they met again in a future Nairobi and the albums is a dedication of the things they missed. Whatever this guys come up with is nothing short of pure gold. With 15 tracks the album has got to be one the best things I've heard in a long time. Starting of the with the bouncy and incredibly catchy “Life of the Party” the album draws you in with the amazing beats and sexy voice doing the hook. It has taken Just-A-Band to revive the music of the past that for many has been forgotten by doing covers of “Dunia Ina Mambo” by the Mighty Cavaliers and “Matatizo” originally by the late Issa Juma of Simba Wanyika. Without a doubt the album speaks volumes of growth in the band and it has worked well for the album fuses various styles and introduction of some really funky horns by Jameri and guitar work to die for as in “Probably for Lovers” which has been received exceptionally well. “Till we Try” has been on repeat since I got the album and the horns just blend in with the guitar and vocals so well its hard not to fall in love. “Doot Doot” is one of the songs that takes you on a sonic trip to places intergalatic and not to mention the vocals that make it one of those songs that fits in a chillout playlist. “Family Ties” is next and it carries the album along and has a faster tempo. In the mellow, soulful and just to damn cool category is “Another Chance” which with cool drum work definitely passes the message intended. The party song that got the crowd giong wild on Saturday has got to be “Get Down”. I dare you not to dance, come in try not to. It is impossible and if the reaction on saturday is anything to go by this one is a certified banger followed by the equally catchy “Bush Baby Disco”. I guess in their journey it was only that “Looking For Home” was in the album, the song beautifully written and produced is one of the songs also getting massive spins. For some really sweet electro is the funky and amazingly dope “S-W-E-E-T”. The albums ends on a nice and mellow tone with “A While”. From what the album contains it is evident that the guys have put in A LOT of hard work and the album is crafted perfectly from beginning to end. I guess I speak for myself and other fans when I say, “apology accepted”.
