LAGOON'S PAST STORY #2

And so… The two of us started our days together. …Those days were really tough… The thing that bothered me most was that he didn't talk much. Didn't even say hello...

He opened his mouth on average once a day or so. And when the work day was over, he'd be the first one to leave long before anyone else. He was getting on in age and always had this angry look on his face.

He was always like that with everyone. And shunned by the technicians around him as a result.

I understood how they felt, more than anyone. But not once did I ever think to leave. Becuase I knew he had skills that were second to none. And the technology to match…

Everything I know, I learned from watching and imitating him. I was trying my best every day, and before I knew it, several months had passed.

LAGOON : Hey, I just finished up this inspection, would you mind giving it a final check?

MR. BALDO : ………..

He used to always say that everything was either "fine" or "not fine". With him, it could only be "no problem" or "no good". But today was different…

MR. BALDO : ...Nice job…

I bet in that moment I was grinning like such an idiot. But I was just so happy to finally get praise from my mentor.

By then, my own shell was starting to crack. It was no longer a struggle to work with him. In fact, it was actually really fun. I was enjoying it.

Then one day after work... Instead of going home early as per usual, he instead called out to me.

MR. BALDO : Come on, follow me!

When I gave chase, what followed really opened my eyes.

LAGOON : …What… What is this…?

Inside of a large garage, sitting atop the hill… Lay the visage of an iron boat with feathered wings…

I had no idea what I was looking at. Overwhelmed as I was by the power of a machine I'd never seen before in my life.

MR. BALDO : "A ship that runs the sky" It's a flying ship!

LAGOON : Huh?! You mean this thing actually flies!?

MR. BALDO : It will fly…

LAGOON : Wow, seriously!? I mean, when did you even make this!?

MR. BALDO : After work.

LAGOON : Ha ha. I guess this is the reason you always went home so early.

I heard all about his late nights, working on the design and developing boats of all manner of size and specification, night in, night out….

MR. BALDO : It will take a little longer to complete, however…

I was more excited than ever. So excited to see such newfound technology, I couldn't sit still.

How could I? Even ground vehicles were still in their infancy. Who would ever think of taking them to the sky?

Well, maybe some of them did. But to actually try their hand, taking on such a reckless challenge armed with nothing but blind faith?

No one would have even dared do such a thing…

...No one, that was, except for this bigoted old man…

LAGOON : Alright, I gotta go. You guys be good, okay?

LAGOON'S BROTHER : Have a good day, bro!

LAGOON'S SISTER : Good luck at work!

I'd pat the heads of my baby siblings every morning as they saw me off. That became my daily routine before heading to work.

LAGOON'S FATHER : You're starting at the garage today, aren't ya?

LAGOON : Oh, yeah. I'm gonna do every scrap of work and make all the money I can. I'll be home late, so please go ahead and eat without me.

LAGOON'S FATHER : I'm sorry for the trouble…

LAGOON : Haha, that's not what I meant. Besides, I like to tinker with machines, so it's really no trouble at all.

LAGOON'S MOTHER : Good luck, be safe!

The whole family saw me off and out I went.

I… was born the eldest son to a family that was far from rich.

With four younger brothers and sisters, I had to start work young myself to support the family.

The market for vehicle maintenance had recently experienced a boom.

Attracted by the solid hourly wage, I decided to take a part-time job as a mechanic there.

MAN : Work station's over there.

LAGOON : (…Hmm?)

I looked across to the station to see a lone old man, silently working on some kind of engine.

You could tell at first glance that he was a craftsman. I can still remember those dry, wrinkled, calloused hands clear as day.

MAN : If you have any questions, ask Mr. Baldo here.

LAGOON : Yes, of course! Mr. Baldo. It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Baldo.

MR. BALDO : ……..

LAGOON : (…Why isn't he paying attention to me?)

I was pissed off deep inside, but I didn't want to get in any trouble on my first day on the job so I just laughed it off.

MAN : He's good with his hands, but as you can see, he's a bit eccentric. Good luck.

The man who showed me around slapped my shoulder with a wry smile and left as quickly as he came.

I tried to look around, but there was only me and the man working away at his engine, all alone at our station.

LAGOON : (Just the two of us? …Seriously?)

Despite my apprehension, he was still quietly working on the engine; His hands still working steady as my anxiety grew...

LAGOON : Hey, sweetheart. You're up awfully late tonight, aren't you? EMMA : Yeah, I can't seem to get to sleep. I don’t know why. Are you working late, Lagoon? LAGOON : I've been holed up in the Sky Garage and lost track of time... Hey, do you have any plans for tomorrow? EMMA : Not that I can think of. LAGOON : Then why not stay up with me tonight?

EMMA : What? LAGOON : Come on, follow me. I'll take you somewhere nice. Before I knew it, Lagoon had driven us out to a small hill in the suburbs. We got out of the car and looked up at the night sky to see twinkling stars all around and the brilliant shine of the moon.

EMMA : Wow, it's so beautiful! LAGOON : Haha, it's a nice view, huh? I found it while on a test run with one of the cars I’d been fixing up. The sky was so clear, just like tonight, and the moon was just as beautiful. EMMA : I had no idea a place like this existed with such a perfect view of the night sky… Thank you for bringing me here! LAGOON : Thank you for the company. Lagoon smiled contentedly and leaned against the car, a cigarette dangling from his lips. LAGOON : Y’know watching something this beautiful by yourself is nice and all, but there’s something really special about seeing it with someone else… EMMA : You’re right, there is. (It's so moving being able to enjoy the view together like this...) As I gaze up at the moon with this thought playing in my mind, a cold night wind blew in absent warning and a sneeze escaped me. EMMA : Oh god, I'm so sorry! LAGOON : Haha, it gets pretty cold at night, sorry for the smoke. Here, you can borrow my jacket. EMMA : But what about you? …Won't you be cold without your jacket… LAGOON : I'm fine. Besides, I'd rather catch a cold than let you catch a cold, so stop worrying so much.
