[Peel 413] 

- The Journey to Headstand (4) -

Although it was still functioning as a civilised commune, the whole place was jumbled with Hindu gods & goddess as well as Xmas trees, crucified Jesus, Buddha’s head, and cows sunbathing on the beach.

There was a handy vegetarian restaurant called ‘The Green Planet’, which served fresh & healthy food. There was also a notice board, displaying local activities, and a supply of clean water for refills. They’re trying to stop cows & other animals, from injuring their stomachs by eating empty plastic bottles that the tourists’throw away.

The cows are holy animals in the Hindu culture, as a divine vehicle of Lord Shiva. Also, Lord Krishna was a cowherd & the protector of cows.

その場所は、気の利いたコミューンとして成り立ってはいたものの、ヒンドゥーの神々から、クリスマスツリーやキリスト像、ブッダの首、牛がビーチで日光浴をし、何もかもがごっちゃ混ぜだった。毎日新鮮でヘルシーな食事が出来る‘グリーンプラネット’という便利なヴェジタリアンレストランがあった。その辺りの様々なお知らせが貼ってある掲示板、それに無料でリフィルの水も提供していた。牛やその他の動物が、路上で旅行者の捨てた空のペットボトルを食べ、胃に穴を開けて死んでしまうのを防止するためだった。

ヒンデゥ教では、牛が「神聖な動物」として大切にされている。牛はシバ神に支える「神の乗り物」でもあり、又クリシュナ神は牛を保護する役目の牛飼いだった。

[Peel 411] 

- The Journey to Headstand (2) -

For no reason, I had kept such a fixed idea that it was impossible to become a yoga teacher without mastering the Headstand. It stressed me out a big time. I ended up puking in a toilet when the plane landed on the Mumbai International. That was the worst flight ever in my life.

Following Tom’s instructions, I travelled to South Goa at first, visiting his recommended Iyengar trained teachers. I was hoping to overcome the Headstand with them for last minute revision.

特に理由があった訳ではないが、わたしは、頭立ちのポーズが出来なければ、ヨガの先生になるなど絶対にあり得ないと、勝手に決めつけていた。そのせいで必要以上にストレスを感じてしまい、トイレの中で嘔吐しながら着陸した。それは、人生で最も悲惨なフライトだった。

トムのアドバイスに習い、超熟練したアイアンガーヨガの先生を訪ねるために、わたしはまず、南ゴアに向かった。わたしは、彼らの集中トレーニングを受けて、一夜漬けで頭立ちを克服しようとしていたのだ。

[Peel 414]

- The Journey to Headstand (5) -

I moved to Petnem beach where was much calmer. I found the landlady standing by the barber as Tom mentioned. Her huts on the rocks were so cheap. I managed to get a hut on the seafront, and my favourite time was observing sunset. It reminded me that becoming a recluse used to be my childhood ambition. My dream was coming true for a moment. I sat outside by the wooden table, and watched the sun setting every day. 

There was no sense of time for a hermit.

わたしは、静かで落ち着いたパットネムビーチに移ることにした。トムが教えてくれた通り、床屋の前に大家のお婆さんが立っていた。岩壁のあちこちに建てられたそのお婆さんのビーチ小屋はずっと格安だった。海沿いの小屋から見える夕暮れ時の光景を見ながら、わたしは、子供の頃の将来の夢は「隠遁者になること」だった事を思い出した。ちょっとだけ夢が叶ったのだ。わたしは 、小屋の外に置いてあるテーブルに腰掛け、毎日ただ夕日を眺めていた。

隠遁者に「時間の感覚」は存在しない。

- The Journey to Headstand (3) -

By the time I got to my lodge, I had no more space left for excitement, but　sleep. It was one of the beach huts made of bamboos. I was not sure how much I’d slept. And I woke up almost having a nightmare in the dark. I couldn’t even remember where I was. I then, heard a dull noise of someone knocking my bamboo door. There were a little daylights coming through the doorframe. I opened the door.

“Oops,” it was a gigantic buffalo greeting me.

I could tell that the buffalo was after something. I turned around and looked at the direction of her gaze behind me.

She was staring a banana skin that was left on a bedside table. I picked the banana skin, and slowly brought it to around her mouth. She caught it rapidly by her tongue, and was happily munching.

I could figure out that I should just chill out.

宿泊先に到着した頃には、もはや感激する余裕も余っておらず、眠るだけだった。竹で造ったビーチ小屋だった。どれだけ眠ったのかもわからない。そして、半ば悪夢にうなされながら、暗闇の中で目覚めた時には、自分がどこにいるのかさえ覚えていなかった。すると、誰かがわたしのドアをノックしているような鈍い音が聞こえた。その竹製のドアのフレームからは、微かな日光が漏れていた。ドアを開けてみた。

それは、大きなバッファローの歓迎だった。

そのバッファローが何かを欲しがっていたという事は、一目瞭然だった。バッファローの視線は、庄頭台に置いてあったバナナの皮にあった。わたしはバナナの皮をゆっくりとバッファローの口元へ運んでみた。すると、バッファローは舌を使って素早くキャッチし、嬉しそうにモグモグと口を動かしはじめた。

それは、力を抜いてリラックスして良いことを告げていた。

- Going to India（３）-

Yoga constantly provesus ‘Never impossible’ in realty. We make the impossible in our minds. To stop smoking & managing headstand were my biggest barriers to go to India for the yoga teacher’s training course. I had failed in every attempt in both over the years, and ‘Impossible’ was stapled in my mind.

-インドへ(3)-

「不可能はない」という事実を体験できるのが、ヨガだ。世の中の大半の不可能は、わたしたちが頭の中で決めてしまっている。

ヨガ指導資格を取得のためインドに行くにあたり、わたしには乗り越えなければならない大きな壁が２つあった。禁煙と頭立ちのポーズがまだ出来ていないことだった。禁煙には長年苦労をし「不可能」の刻印が克明に刻まれていた難題だった。

The Journey to Headstand (7) -

Despite intensive training by the Iyengar teachers, I was still unable to do headstand.

I was hopelessly sitting in the middle of studio on my own early in the morning, and gazing the endless field in front of me. I then, found something moving in far distance. It was a young girl. She was brushing her teeth, while walking very slowly into the misty field in between buffalos.

That was grand.

The girl was able to wake up and brushing her teeth in a magnificent landscape every morning.

It blew my mind. Achieving headstand seemed to be so insignificant.

アイアンガー派の先生達との訓練も虚しく、わたしは依然として頭立ちのポーズが出来なかった。

困ったわたしは、早朝からスタジオの真ん中に座り、目の前の広大な草原をぼんやりと眺めた。すると、遠くで何かが動いていた。それは小さな女の子だった。少女は歯を磨きながら、ゆーら、ゆーらと、バッファローの間を通り抜け、 霧がかった草原の中をゆっくりと歩いていた。

その光景は、とても壮大だった。

あの子は、毎朝、あの大草原に向かって目覚め、歯磨きをしているんだ。

そう思ったら、なぜかすごく感動した。そして、しばし頭立ちのことは忘れてしまった。

  - Going to India (2) -

There were no smartphones just yet. The back-packers were still using Internet cafés on beach with dead slow old PCs that takes 10mins to send an email.

I only had a small piece of paper in my wallet with Tom’s hand drawn maps & some scribbles. He knew places and hotels where exactly he stayed but did not remember names and small details. But he was convinced I could find them once I got there.

Believe me, everything was there exactly as he described!

Life can be pretty simple sometimes.

–インドへ（２）–

スマートフォンなどはまだなかった。バックパッカー達は、ビーチにあるインターネット・カフェで、メールを一通送るのに10分位かかるような古いウィンドウズを利用していた時のことだ。

わたしは、自分の財布の中にトムの手書きの地図と殴り書きの説明が書かれた小さな紙切れを持っていただけだった。彼は、自分が泊まったホテルとか場所はちゃんと知っていたものの、名前までは覚えていなかった。でも、行けば絶対に見つかると確信していた。

それは本当だった！彼の言う通り、全て見つかった。

人生は、時には非常にシンプルなのだ。

- Pandora’s Box (4) -

Thingumyat work had opened the Pandora’s box of my yoga path for sure.

On the following week, I asked to Cassy about ‘the type of yoga’.

That must be the wrong question for Cassy. She gathered her eyebrows and turned around with her empty smile and said “ That is not something you need to worry about”.

That was true! That was not something we needed to worry about with Cassy. She was already on a guru’s level. Mr. Iyengar, the legend guru had said, “ There are four stages of practitioners, mild, average, intense, keenly vehement”.

She was one of ‘the Keenly vehement’! She was able to conquer her own style after being through every style of yoga gurus.

It was ‘THE CASSY’S YOGA’!

パンドラの箱（４）

職場のトフスランの一言により、わたしのヨガ道におけるパンドラの箱が開いてしまった。翌週、わたしは‘ヨガの流派’について、まずはキャシーに尋ねてみることにした。

それは、キャシーにとっては愚問に違いなかった。彼女は眉間にしわを寄せ、空っぽの笑顔でこちらを振り向き、言い放った。「それは、別にあなたが悩むことではないのよ」

確かに、それはキャシーにとっては特に悩むべき問題ではなかった。彼女は既に偉大なグルと呼べるレベルに達していた。「ヨガの実践者は４つの段階に分類できるーマイルド、標準、インテンシブ、そして、この上なく熱烈な卓越者」と、あのレジェンド、ミスター・アイアンガーがそう語っていた。キャシーは間違いなく「この上なく熱烈な卓越者」 であり、ありとあらゆるグルたちのスタイルを征服し、独自の流派を確立していた。それは「キャシー流のヨガ」だった。
