not sure about the other streaming services, but Netflix seems to publish which films/shows are about to get removed.

so in theory, a bot could:

scrape for the announcement

check against an internal database (sometimes Netflix re-adds and re-removes stuff)

scrape a set of direct download and torrent databases for promising links

write promising links to a file for human review alongside resolution, upscaling, sound quality, size and torrent health

a review script could then display all options for each, allowing the user to select which to download.

seems like a much smaller project than some of my other ideas d:

Hey! Do you know how can I install Windows 10 for free? My computer has Windows 7 and it’s not even like legally bought and installed xd a friend pirated it for me. unfortunately you've missed the free official upgrade by quite a few years. :'c win7 is completely unsupported now so it's definitely time to upgrade but i'm surprised at that message tbh.

if you don't mind the "activate windows" watermark and having limited customisation options, you can download it from microsoft and install for free. it only requires a key for a full unlock.

as for less official methods, the typical options used are OEM keys (the ones sold to Dell/HP/Acer etc. which are valid for multiple installations) or cracks that remove the need for a valid key. OEM keys are considered a safer method as running random executables or dropping in random DLLs is a risky practice.

unfortunately i took my free upgrade to W10 (from a cracked W7 install, no less) back in like 2016 and have since switched back to daily driving Linux so i'm not sure of specific places to look. sorry about that ^^'

there's also cheap keys for like £10-15 - i think SmartCDKeys is okay but again there's a few websites like that, some more reputable than others

of course, another option is to switch to Linux (if you don't have any Windows-specific requirements)

what's a seedbox?

a seedbox is a dedicated torrent/p2p machine. some may also do direct downloads, run media and file servers etc. but the core is that it's a dedicated torrent machine.

the name comes from p2p lingo where you have seeders and leaches. a leach is anyone downloading from a p2p network and a seeder is anyone who, upon download completion, stays connected to upload to others on that p2p network.

it's common etiquette to seed to at least a 1.0 ratio (gave back as much as you took), but quite often people will go for >2.0 ratio to keep the torrent healthy.

a seedbox being dedicated can be configured any number of ways (seed until X ratio, seed X torrents until at least Y ratio, cycling out when new ones are added and Y ratio was met, unlimited ratio and cycling through an ever-growing list....) but the point is they benefit the seedbox owner by being dedicated to this task (not sucking up resources on your main machine or relying on it being turned on) and they benefit the wider community by giving back.

Seedbox OS recommendations

if anyone has any good linux or bsd distros for a 24/7 seedbox i'd appreciate the suggestions ! i have a boot SSD arriving tomorrow for it.

the hardware is pretty low-spec by modern standards: we got an Athlon 64 x2 2100+ 2c2t and 3GB DDR2 800, and for now i'll be using a spare TP-Link wireless N card i have.

my aim is a pretty minimal install that can run stable ~24/7 (excepting reboots from major updates):

IVPN service

SSH

transmission-cli (accessible via web interface, tremc over SSH, or transmission-qt remote session)

SFTP for file copy

some kind of cron for helping manage updates and mailing me (unless we have systemd which i think has scheduling ???)

i may add some kind of auto-search/scraping in the future (apparently you can even hook that up to like discord bots and stuff but i don't particularly need that bit, just the search part) but rn i'm happy to SSH in and provide magnet links manually.

reminder that the financial difference between spotify/streaming and pirating is bigger for consumers than artists.

if you want to support an artist you buy their music direct or from a store, you buy merch and go to gigs (ticketed and unticketed - a lot of venues give % to bands from the bar so remember to buy lots of drinks to help support, especially small venues !!!)

just realised all i need for a (temporary) seedbox is a couple more hard drive mounts and a couple sata cables...

i have enough drives (until i get better ones), i have the computer, i have a wifi adapter (until i can get get a gigabit ethernet adapter [the motherboard has 10/100 onboard] and a 5G modem/router)

so apparently there's a service that essentially paid media piracy ? like it has Netflix + prime + disney+ etc. libraries all in one place (only way to do that is pirating)

but then... you pay for it ???

i guess not everyone has the time to find all the shows they want, but do people just not know how to source stuff safely anymore ??
