I AM SO SICK OF ANSWERING THE QUESTION, "YOONIS, WHY DO YOU LIKE KPOP?"
I get how it can be confusing, okay. But most of the time their reasoning is "why listen to something you can't understand?"
So, here. For the first time since getting a tumblr I shall rant/answer, HONESTLY why I like Korean Pop so much.
And I think I'm gonna begin with the language barrier issue, because seriously. That's the most annoying analogy ever made. I've said this before, Imma say it again. People listen to all sorts of shit, some weirder than mine. I, personally, don't get off on opera music, however some people seem to think that it's golden. I respect that. It's just not for me. Opera isn't in English either, okay. Why don't people ever question that? And, oh my god, don't even get me started on classical music. YOU DON'T HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THE VIOLIN TO APPRECIATE IT'S BEAUTY.
Which brings me to my next reason. I'm Asian. But I live in a country that is Americanized to the fucking core. This country kind of reeks of American culture, it's almost shameful. In any case, American TV shows, American culture, pretty much everything American is as accessible here as 7 elevens. You know what I mean? I like, but simultaneously find it ironic (and maybe even a bit pathetic) how I (an Asian) has to go the extra mile just so I can comfortably enjoy Korean Pop music (another Asian country) whereas Western music (in a whole other continent) is just a radio button away. I like working for a connection and liking what I find. And, regardless if I fully understand what's being sang, I still enjoy the language itself. There is something very fascinating about languages to me and Hanggul is on my list of languages to learn (and perhaps speak fluently, one day).
Reason three is the music videos. I LOVE ANYTHING ARTISTIC AND KOREAN MUSIC VIDEOS (for the most part) SATIATE MY EVERY ARTISTIC COLOR CRAVING FIBER. I'm not even exaggerating. Have you ever watched a well executed Korean Pop video? It's BEYOND perfect. This is me setting aside my bias for the artists on screen. I'm judging the videos themselves for what they are worth and every time I watch "Go Away" by 2NE1 I can't help but leave my jaw to hit the floor with a "thwack*. The cinematography is top notch, there's a plot and something to look forward too, the songs are catchy and the visuals they provide me with is everything but boring.
Reason number four is (...see how I made it this far without having made any sort of comparison, yet?) KOREAN ARTISTS/IDOLS ARE ACTUALLY TALENTED. No. Read that again. THEY. ARE. TALENTED. They HAVE TO BE. Or else they would have never made it outside of their companies' training rooms. For those of you who are not aware, KPOP Idol groups such as SHINee, 2ne1, DBSK, UKISS, SUJU, SNSD, Kara, F.T. Island, and the list goes on...had to endure numerous years (minimum of 1-2 years) of training before debuting as a group. Before even making it into a company they have to audition. Some companies are much more physical than others, some are all about talent and god given attributes. And IF the company's recruiters see potential they will TRAIN those who were chosen and those who undergo training still have a LOOOOOOONG way to go before finally stepping on stage. In the duration of their training they go through vocal coaches, dance choreographers, modeling classes, minimal acting classes, what have yous and NOT ALL OF THEM DEBUT. That's how the Korean media industry functions and I'm not saying that it's all fair play, but it must tell you something about the talent that these companies put out.
And I like the culture. All cultures opposite of my own are intriguing to me and Korea is no different. My fandom (and I am no longer ashamed to admit this) stretches past their music and extends to their movies, their TV shows, their interactions and gradually I learn the pros and cons of their country. This is me saying that South Korea isn't perfect, but what country is? That aside, it's still the kind of culture that I would like to learn more from because it's original and, like I said, the complete opposite of my own. My fascination also applies in other cultures, but for the sake of this post I'm going to enclose my opinions around the main topic at hand.
LASTLY, I LIKE THE OMG-IT-LOOKS-SO-REAL-BUT-IT-CAN'T-BE-FANSERVICE. For those of you who aren't familiar with the term FanService, this is when two (maybe three, maybe all of them) members of a certain group will start playing with each other's hair, singing to each other (this does not solely pertain to Girls and Boys...I'm talking about flirtations and suggestive winks between Boys and Boys and not so much on the Yuri, but I'll get there haha)...if you're one of the people who does not listen to KPOP and thinks that all of the Korean Boy bands are gay THEN YOU FUCKING KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. And I'm not going to deny the reality that these boys flirt. I'm speaking as a fangirl that ENJOYS seeing the guys that I like kind of messing around on stage. I LIKE IT, OKAY. I don't particularly enjoy the thought of them together, but I LIKE THE FLIRTY BANTER. IT WORKS. I can't explain what it is exactly that draws me to such actions...BUT IT JUST WORKS. So, I get it if some of you are offended by it, but I really don't see why you should be. I'm not offended by how homosexuality or anything remotely related to it. AND AS FAR AS THE REALITY OF THEM BEING ACTUAL HOMOSEXUALS GO, I'd be fine with it. I won't judge them (or anyone else for who they want to love or who they are with). I'm just here for the music, the fanservice, and the sexy, sexy men that I will never see in real life. TEARY EYED FANGIRL IS TEARY EYED. :))
I'm sure I have many other reasons for being a true KPOP fan (who knows that FIRE isn't the only song 2ne1 released, who doesn't think that SuJu is the only boy band from Korea, and knows that BOYS OVER FLOWERS did not originate in Korea. NOR DID IT ORIGINATE IN TAIWAN. It was a manga, you guys. A Japanese Manga. FYI)
SO, there. I hope that clears shit up. And I wrote all of this with minimal swearing. <3 - Yoonis
