But Joseph’s Troubles about Mary (and, similarly, the York Play of the Crucifixion) demand we approach the biblical narratives with more generic flexibility, asking about the place of humour, fablieaux, and even farce in sacred texts. This generic flexibility might encourage us to question the malleability of religion and theology in the medieval period as more open for interpretation (and perhaps even more populist) that we traditionally assume.
