Soothing the Savage Breast
Can music build bridges of understanding between nations at strife, when words fail us?
I had a lovely time speaking with Prof Stephanie Martin's York University Music Composition class, in a wide-ranging discussion: conflict resolution; political resistance; the cultural thread that runs from the Epic of Gilgamesh, to the Seikilos Epitaph, to the Voyager space probes; and what it means to be human.
I most enjoyed hearing her students' compositions in progress.
