A/N: This one's a little rough, a little melodramatic, but for stylistic purposes I reckon it fits. She's a traumatised teenager, of course she's gonna feel things really strongly.

Mom always told me that the world is a dark, cold, lonely place. For the longest time, I believed her. When I faced the world as Nonoka Tachibana, I was in a place where light and warmth never came.

So one day, as I drifted aimlessly through my idol life, I found a beacon of light. Before I knew it, I was swimming for the first time in my life. Even through my darkest days, even when it sank in that Mom only loved Nonoka and not my true self, I clung to the hope that one day, I would meet you. All I knew of you was your art, and yet, I fell in love with you the instant you lit up my dark corner of the world. Even when my idol career dissipated before my eyes, I had a new purpose to fulfill: to sing for you.

The night we met was a dream come true. When we crossed paths in person for the first time, I knew we were meant to be together. Working alongside Mei, Kiui, and most importantly you, was an opportunity I never once took for granted. You took my hand and swam beside me, even during the darkest nights. I sang for you; you drew for me. Just as it was always meant to be.

I should've known… I should've known that you’d swim ahead. I should've known that you'd let go of my hand and leave me floating alone in the darkness. I'm destined to be alone, after all, and I can't do anything to change that. I was a fool to even hope that you loved me back. Not even your plans for the future hold any room for me. All I ever was to you was a stepping stone towards your career.

I hope that goes well for you, Mahiru.

Don’t mind that I'm drowning in the darkest depths of the ocean. The jellyfish that can’t swim at night was me all along.

Yorukage Ep 9 thoughts

I usually despise the "we can't just communicate so now we have problems" thing but this was an interesting one. Mahiru is trying to do what Kano inspired her to: improve her art, love her art, and go far with it. Kano is hurt that her mother "chose" Mahiru over her. Rather than see the value in Kano's personal project, she looked at Mahiru and said "I'll take that one." Kano loves her mom and thinks that she's a good person. We, the viewer, know better. Kano's mom is a manipulative person who will go to any lengths to achieve her goals. She does not care about Mahiru. She cares about getting back at Kano and breaking apart her little group. She lied to Kano about her music reaching her father. She probably instigated the entire Idiot channel.

There is no way that Kano could express all of that. In fact, the way she argues that Mahiru should stay showcases her mother's manipulative language. She can only gaslight gatekeep girlboss her way through things.

Mahiru in the meantime should probably have known that getting a big job from your gf's abusive mom who kicked her out of her own band is probably a big no no! Kinda fucked up, honestly. But she's young and naïve and wants to take this big chance. it seems worth it!

It ain't, girl. It just ain't.

So yeah, this is one of those times where expressing the truth was not easy, and so this kind of "if you'd just told me!" conflict isn't the cheap divide we often see in media. It's a legitimate conflict with nuanced causes and plenty of teenage hormones. Another reason I love this show.
