Recently I've been looking throughThe Paradox Box, a collection of postcards and booklets issued some years ago by Shambala Press. The contents are all clever in various ways. This image by artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (circa1850) appears on one of the postcards. Suggestive to the Western eye of the works of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, it stands in a tradition of composite imagery known as Yose-e.
