A year with Studio Ghibli in the run up to the release of The Wind Rises and The Tale of the Princess Karguya. A facinating look at how they make their movies (and which makes me super excited for all the upcoming one I have in my netflix list/queue) Mostly still hand-drawn, someone went so far as to say that Miyazaki sometimes doesn't know where the stories are going to end up, as though they write themselves through him; he story boards them all and then from those they come up with a script/dialogue. Seeing how much thought went into the marketing, voice actors for the Japanese release, and the press conference they gave was interesting. The studio's philosophy that success wasn't a priority so much as their employees being there doing what wanted to be doing and gaining skills, and that if they felt the work or the studio stopped appealing to them they were free to leave. The studio itself looked real nice, that roof top garden/green space, all the window illustrations hung on the walls. Looking through Miyazaki's huge old scrapbooks and hearing that The Wind Rises was the first of his movies to bring him to tears, probably because it was so personal, partially based on his father, was endearing and interesting. The Studio's name comes "from the Italian noun 'ghibli' based on the Libyan-Arabic name for the desert wind of that country, the idea being the studio would blow a new wind through the anime industry." (wikipedia). Apparently it also references an Italian aircraft as well, but it's pronounced differently. Also as of February 2017 Miyazaki is back out of retirement to direct their new film. #ssmovieof2017 #documentary #animation #anime #netflixpurge #HayaoMiyazaki #YumikoMiyoshi #ToshioSuzuki #IsaoTakahata #ShinsukeNonaka #JoeHisaishi #GorôMiyazaki #HideckiAnno #SeijioKuda #YoshiakiNishimura #Ushiko written and directed by #MamiSunada movie of 2017 number 8) #TheKingdomofDreamsandMadness #Yumetokyôkinoôkoku
