For @reminiscezine, a zine celebrating nostalgic fandoms from before '10, I chose two anime that hold great significance to me. I want to thank them for this opportunity to create art for fandoms I love and hold good memories and significance to me on a nostalgic level.
For my first piece, I drew for Yotoden, also known under the full title of Sengoku Kitan Yotoden. It's an OVA series from the 80's about 3 ninja from different schools of ninja, joining together to defeat the man who orchestrated their destruction and plans to completely dominate Japan, Nobunaga Oda. Yotoden wasn't very popular in the west, but had an English dub of the condensed movie version known as Wrath of the Ninja (this was the version I watched first and sought out the OVAs after) however it was pretty popular in Japan during the late 80's and early 90's and from what I've seen, still has a huge following in Japan online today. It's not the best anime, but it's something of a comfort to me. One of my online handles is based on one of the characters from it, Ranmaru Mori, who in turn was based on a real historical figure and I actively collect merch for this; owning a copy of both the OVA and movie version on DVD, the very rare manga and a few animation cels. I loved it so much, that I drew the anime for my 2nd GCSE mock art piece (which was very similar to my Reminisce zine piece, which is intentional) and solidified my interest in ninjas and what introduced me to the Sengoku era, which is one of the historical periods I find most interesting in Japan and globally. For my piece, I drew the main character, Ayame, a young kunoichi who disguised herself under the male alias Ayanosuke, to survive once her village was destroyed by Nobunaga Oda's demonic forces. She is fighting Ranmaru, who is a major villain within the story, using her trusted kodachi, coveted by the Kasumi ninja. In the background, the mysterious comet goes by, with the full moon which is about to eclipse, which will signify the battle to save humanity as seen in the final episode.
For my second piece, I drew Bubblegum Crisis, which was a more well known 80's OVA in the west, as well as Japan. It's known for being heavily inspired by blade runner, with 80's J-pop and J-rock music video montages within each episode, mecha and a group of vigilantes for hire called the Knight Sabers who wear hardsuits to fight the injustices caused by big companies that exploit their power within the city. Despite getting into Bubblegum Crisis a bit later in my teen years, I fell in love with it and knew it would be one of my favourite anime (which it still is) from the first episode alone. It was everything I wanted in an 80's OVA and it still holds up well as an entertaining watch. The songs are great and enjoyable to listen to outside of the anime, which I often do. For my piece I drew the main character, Priss, who is a biker chic, whom fronts a band called the Replicants, but is also one of the members of the Knight Sabers. She undeniably dons the best hardsuit from the group. I decided to draw Priss as her 2 alter-egos, her rocker chic and in her Knight Saber hardsuit in a similar way Kenichi Sonoda, the character designer of Bubblegum Crisis, would, by superimposing her identities over each other and using bold, bright colours for the characters and a dark colour for the background. I based the piece during the opening segment of the first episode 'Tinsel City Rhapsody', where Priss in her rocker chic getup sings the opening song 'Konya wa Hurricane' (which translates to 'Tonight, A Hurricane or 'There's A Hurricane Tonight') as the A.D police fail to handle a rogue Boomer (name for the androids in this universe) and the other Knight Sabers begin despatching to do the job themselves. The montage is heavily inspired by Streets of Fire's opening song 'Nowhere Fast'.
