so by now we probably all know the basics when it comes to icon-ing and the first rule which is, always save your base icons. i am going to share how i save my base icons because i personally think it is the easiest and best alternative. some of you may already do this, however for those of you who save your base icons individually, there is another way.
first up, layer all of your icons on top of the other as per below.
it doesn’t matter how many layers you end up with. as long as they’re already positioned / cropped to how you want the icon to look. once you have all of your base icons, it’s up to you whether you want to edit anything before you save it. generally, i use the same sharpening presets regardless of the psd i use, so i’ll usually sharpen all of my base icons, that way i don’t have to do it later. now you can save as is, otherwise i usually add the psd that i’m using at the time however that isn’t necessary.
now, the general idea is to save the base icons so that if you ever want to change your psd, you don’t have to go through and remake everything from scratch. usually, that would mean saving the icons individually without a psd applied. that’ll look something like this.
if that works for you, then that’s great ! but the way i save my base icons, is i save it as one psd. usually, because i icon by episode - season - show / film, i’ll name the psd as “base” and i normally save it after the first icon, and then i save over it at the end once i’ve finished icon-ing whatever material i’m currently working on. like below.
that means that you can icon half an episode, save the psd, then open the psd and finish icon-ing the rest of the episode at a later date. when you open up that base.psd file in photoshop, every base icon you have currently made will be saved as a layer in that psd, so if you ever want to change what psd colouring or border you use on an icon, all you have to do is delete the below psd layer example and replace with a new psd.
then, you just batch save your new icons. this way, you don’t have to reopen every individual base icon to edit with the new psd, and you don’t have to remake them all from scratch.
