I’m not a person to start shit, but this is personal.
My mom works at a Joann Fabrics. Over the last week many Joann employees all over the USA are enraged that they have to work during a full blown pandemic. They are not provided gloves, cleaning supplies to sterilize their stores, and are in close contact with some of the most at risk members of the population.
The company insists they are essential business and need to be open to help provide fabric for mask kits, but this is a lie. They are making a quick buck by being one of the few stores open to a bored and scared public. There are no kits provided by the company. They are being dropped off by people making them at home in non-sterilized environments. These masks cannot be donated to hospitals because they do not have the proper materials to qualify as medical grade. They are a handy craft people are making to feel like they are helping. They could just donate them to nursing homes or to their neighbors to help prevent spread of germs, but they are just dumping them on my mother and best friend who also works at Joann’s.
The store is currently enforcing that only a few people enter at a time to discourage people from coming in and shopping for the safety of the EMPLOYEES. Today a woman didn’t want to wait in line to donate masks in a ziplock bag, so she threw them out her car window and drove off. All the people in line saw, but didn’t touch the bag because the don’t know if it’s safe. My mother was yelled at to put an online order into someone’s truck to prevent face to face exposure.
This is unacceptable. Joann Fabrics should not be open. The things they are saying about being essential and doing good work for the country are lies. They are just causing more undue stress and putting people I love in danger.
If you are bored and need things to do; play a board game with your family, Read a book, Find a TV show to binge, Exercise, new recipes you wanted to try, chores you’ve been putting off, building a fort out of all your toilet paper!
Literally anything BUT GOING TO A JOANN FABRICS! If they want to stay open and put my family in harm’s way then we should hurt them in the only language they understand. MONEY.
YOUR YARN AND CRAFT SUPPLIES ARE NOT WORTH MY MOM’S HEALTH AND SAFETY!
I’ve been mostly quiet about the outbreak because it’s not just me in all this. That being said, my father is immune compromised. My mom and I have asthma. My mom is working in a place which doesn’t care that she is being put at risk. My best friend is also being put at risk. I refuse to sit around while the people I care about are being sacrificed for a quick buck.
The store my friend and mom work in is now only doing online orders and curbside pick up. The number of orders is in the triple digits every day. They never got plastic shields for the cashiers. Still not PPEs or extra cleaning supplies. They are still doing sales on non-essential items. People are still dropping off masks for donations that they don’t know where to send. My mom comes home crying from the working conditions. The trucks of pointless stuff keep arriving each week.
