About Vanya regarding Five's Disappearance

When a person who you're attached to dies, you feel it in your gut. So when Vanya watched as he walked away, she knew something wasn't right but he was alive–she never felt that strong punch in her gut nor did she felt the void in her being. He was simply just gone, away from her but he was alive–she was sure of it. Even when her siblings had stopped waiting for him altogether.

Vanya stayed up all night waiting for her favorite person to burst into her room in a blue light and take her with him, but he didn't. Instead she worried that he had lost his way–so she did the most logical thing she can think of, make him a lighthouse. She kept the porch lights open in hopes that it will serve as a beacon and guide him back to the Academy, back to her, but as the days turned into weeks, weeks turned to months and months turned to a year and she ran out of marshmallows, Vanya's hope turned into sour bitterness that made her blood curdle.

Her siblings had accepted the fact that Number Five wasn't coming home, at least one less sibling to compete with, but Vanya held on to their promise of running away together. Her thoughts was clouded with a smoke of numbness that she had stopped turning on the light, stopped making his favorite sandwiches but she still kept her windows unlocked–a trait she carries over into adulthood–hoping that the Boy who had stormed out all those months ago would come back to get her because she was his favorite person.

Her bitterness might've eaten at her in roaring waves–made her gasping for breath and looking for shore as she went day to day in this godforsaken Academy–but deep inside her, in the recesses of her being, she always knew he would come back. It was just a matter of when.
