The salty spray of the sea was not familiar to Griffith’s childhood. However, for the past couple of months, he’s been waking up to the call of seagulls and the lull and splash of the ocean. The sun shone on his face. He sat up from the pile of folded, old sails he’s been using as a bed, and rubbed his eyes. Another day of grunt work and getting yelled at, but he was close to making a small fortune for a boy of ten, just enough to survive a trip to the capital.
In a rather chipper mood, Griffith did his morning routine, which constituted only of counting his silver coins in a hidden corner, and grabbing a bowl of porridge from an elderly woman who thought him her grandson. She was clearly senile, but she was always happy to see Griffith, sometimes even going as far as giving him little sugar rocks.
Scarfing down his breakfast, he thanked the old woman, and ran down to the docks. There was an important arrival today, some royalty or another. The men were all talking about it, but Griffith didn’t really care. As long as he got paid, he was happy.
