the eighth ficlet of Christmas
[I’ve been amusing myself with online prompt generators, and one of them spat out two abstract nouns that sparked an idea about Jyn & Cassian and the lessons they were taught as children.]
*
“Perseverance, Jyn. Persistence. A warrior who doesn’t give up will always win in the end.” Saw’s boots trod heavily on the stone as they crossed the half-enclosed hangar space carved out of the ancient pyramid. “Persistence can bring down any fortress. Be like sand, that gives underfoot, slips away, but wears away and infiltrates the most secure stronghold.”
The little girl at his side nodded, looking around curiously. She’d never seen so many star fighters in one place before—there must be at least two squadrons stationed here, based on the number of fuelling stations and astromech droids—even more if they were doubling up like the Partisan pilots had to.
Saw scowled at the sight and squeezed her shoulder with a strong grip. “You could do more damage to the Empire with a sharp stick than these oh-so-advanced Rebels. Because you are determined. You won’t give up at the first hint of resistance. Will you, child?”
Eyes shining, she shook her head. “I won’t give up.” The pendant under her shirt shifted, falling lower on its string and banging against her ribs.

“Evasion, Andor. The most important tool a spy has. If the enemy can’t find you, if they don’t even know you exist, they can’t catch you.” Draven nodded at one of the base’s feral tookas, lazily basking on the warm stone. “Let the cats hunt other mice while you’re hiding under their feet, silently gnawing at the foundations.”
Cassian thought that sounded more like termites, but he agreed anyway. Apt metaphor or not, the principle was sound.
“Others will want to be seen, to destroy the enemy in a spectacular display. Let them have the glory—that’s not our concern. All we want is the victory. If no-one ever knows what we did to make it happen, that doesn’t matter.”
Draven sidestepped sharply, avoiding a running pilot and skirting around a small box droid, but Cassian had no trouble keeping up.
“Today is a chance to practice that skill. Try not to let Gerrera see you. More importantly, if he does, be invisible. Unimportant. Just another kid.” He stared down at Cassian, making the boy wish again that the growth spurt everyone said he was due for would hurry up already.
Cassian nodded, once. “Understood.”
When he isn't working alone, Lethal usually works with Mirain Kashk, Ilar's younger sister. Despite his profession to being a loner, he was raised in a large family environment and actually being alone for too long makes him growly. Mirain has been his friend since they were both young, since he's only a year or so younger, and balances him quite well. They grow closer in the Rebellion through both working intelligence. As a result, he is one of maybe four people who knows anything about her private life, including that she has one.
One of the others Lethal works with, though less often, is Ri'an Xionyu. One of the oldest on the Intel team, Ri'an is Cassian Andor's age, and has been known to corral the youngest Toqema to do things like eat and sleep with surprisingly little resistance. He is one of the first people outside Lethal's extended clan (the teens who came from the same set of ships and grew up together) to figure out that Lethal uses non-serious insults as terms of affection. (Wedge Antilles, meanwhile, takes about two years to figure this out.)

Young Rebels (1989)
She was so young, with a half-life like an empty house full of sunlight. She simply hadn’t been able to hold on.
