Eligible men age 18 to 25 will be automatically registered for the military draft starting in December 2026 as part of a defense bill Donald Trump signed into law in December 2025.

Young men were already required to register for selective service for a potential draft, and automatic registration was already in place in 46 states and territories.

The U.S. has not had a draft since the Vietnam War. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said last month that a draft is “not part of the current plan right now,” but that Trump “wisely keeps his options on the table.”
