AHBL X-Mas 2: #YouShitNow

Here’s every note I took at the Melbourne convention!

Mostly in order. Cast comments are paraphrased unless obviously directly quoted.

Under a cut because… uh. It’s kinda long. I was much more prepared this time.

The notes from Rich & Matt’s panel are less detailed/complete than the rest because of the sheer number of hypothetical questions that were asked. The answers were usually so short and broken up by tangential comments that it was impossible to listen and take notes without completely losing track of what was being said.

Amazingly, there was only one prank-adjacent question during the entire day *sound of angelic choir*

PRE-PANELS & PHOTO OPS

Matt and Rich came out first thing to welcome us all, and immediately Matt lectured Rich for over-pronouncing the R in Melbourne. Told him to say it like a local. Rich joked, “Don’t wanna hear any R’s today. I’m Ichard in Melb’n.”

I went up onstage for a game while Rich and Alaina’s photo ops were happening--not even sure how to explain the game, but it involved three teams, twelve toothpicks, and a bunch of lifesaver candies. Matt, Bri, and Kim came out to be team captains. Matt was the head of Team Awesome AF. We failed him terribly but he insisted that we won (we definitely did not) and I received the first of my multiple Matt Cohen high fives for the day.

I only had an op with Kim & Bri (ended up overspending earlier in the weekend) and they were so lovely. Just. Such wonderful energy. They’re both so warm and it’s clear from the way they interact with each other and the fans that they really do love getting out to meet people. I asked them to do a Rosie the Riveter pose with me, and it turned out great! I’ll post the picture separately :D

PANELS

Alaina

Alaina was supposed to be paired up with Ruth for her panel, but unfortunately Ruth had to cancel her AHBL appearance to film an episode. Alaina seemed a little nervous about doing a whole panel on her own but quickly warmed up.

Alaina has noticed that some Australians pronounce her name strangely, but added that she’s had a lot of people struggle with her name back home, too. Once at Starbucks her order was called out for “aluminum”

An audience member shouted out aluminium with the Australian pronunciation and Alaina laughed and tried to say it back a few times… not much success :P

She tried to call Ruth during the panel but Ruth’s phone was out of range.

Started working as a model when she was only 14, traveled a lot & lived in Tokyo for a while. Didn’t do much acting until her agent encouraged her.

Alaina’s first entry into genre TV was the short-lived series Painkiller Jane, based on the comic character of the same name. She asked if anyone in the audience knew it; not many people did. She enjoyed working on it but the network didn’t promote it enough, and it failed to get picked up for a second season.

Talked a little about going to her first conventions when she worked on Stargate. Lots of rude people at those conventions; “People would say (to Alaina), I hate you, why don’t you leave?” The experience there made her hesitant when accepting the role on SPN because she knew there was a vocal fanbase & was afraid of the same attitude. She’s glad she accepted though, because SPN has been the highlight of her career so far, and the fans have accepted and loved her. Big smiles when she said this <3

The scene Alaina read for her SPN audition was the scene where Abaddon’s head got chopped off. Alaina, reenacting herself reading the script for the first time and seeing her character getting decapitated before continuing to talk; “this shit is ridiculous!”

When she was still fairly new, one of her friends sent her a message telling her “there’s all this really beautiful fan art” of her as Abaddon. One thing lead to another, and Alaina ended up reading Abaddean porn. “Dean was in pink panties. He was into it.”

About working on Kings of Con: “It’s so funny. So proud of my friends.”

Rob wrote Alaina’s character, Marnie, with her in mind. She said he insisted that this doesn’t mean he has a thing for her.

When she first read the script she was at the gym “laughing my ass off.”

Even though they’d all worked the con circuit together, she hadn’t worked with Rob or Rich on set before. “It was fun to be in a different environment with them.”

Apparently Rich and Rob don’t break, ever. Alaina can’t stop laughing.

During a scene in KoC when Alaina’s character is yelling at Rob, Rob kept asking her whenever they cut filming “why are you being so mean?” She told him, “you wrote it!”

About the prank on Mark Sheppard while Alaina was shadowing Phil Sgricciaon set: it was Ruth’s idea. Alaina turned up, and Ruth was holding a huge box full of pictures of Misha. She was frazzled because she worried Mark was going to show up before they could get it done--he’s always on set early, sometimes even a whole day early. Alaina: “I went into mom mode” just started sticking the pictures everywhere, hid them in the toilet, in Mark’s shoes. When Misha first saw it he was just like, “...what.”

The rest of the day, every time Misha cut a scene he wanted to go check to see if Mark had found it yet. Alaina taped the AD’s phone to the wall in Mark’s trailer and hit record so they wouldn’t miss his reaction. Fan asked if she thinks Mark was mad or thought it was funny. She said he laughed when he first walked in. “I think he thought it was funny.”

She also said “Ruth’s gonna get it.” :P

Alaina tends to get cast as tough characters--she thinks it’s because she’s tall and speaks in a low register. Said to her agent: “Can I play a damsel? I wanna be rescued!”

Enjoys playing tough women & baddies, but baddies “have no longevity.” Tough characters with morals get to stick around, but straight-up evil like Abaddon get defeated and killed off. Gives Crowley as example; they had to humanize him to keep him relevant, or the boys would have killed him by now.

Alaina would love to return as Josie someday & explore her character a little more. Said she’s more interested in Josie’s story than Abaddon’s as a human character with morals and goals has more depth. “Not that it’s not fun” to play bad guys.

Mentioned working on Smallville and having someone come up to her one day and ask, “Hey, you wanna learn how to throw knives?”

Alaina knew nothing about Supernatural before being on it, same with Stargate. Still hasn’t seen much of either because it’s such a huge time commitment.

She’s been traveling her whole life since she started modelling at 14, has always loved just wandering aimlessly in cities. She mentioned that she did that for one day in Sydney on this trip but started to get a bit lonely--then Bri and Kim arrived and she was like “My friends are here!” :D

Bri and Alaina got tattoos in Sydney--Alaina got a heart on her wrist. Matt wanted to get one too--a koi fish--but they didn’t have time.

Alaina’s kids have been too young to watch her work on SPN yet, but one of her sons is in middle school now so she thinks his friends will probably start watching SPN soon. “I’m gonna be so cool.”

She told a story about how she went to meet her nieces after they’d seen her as Abaddon and they couldn’t talk when they saw her!

When her daughter was 3yo, she saw a still of Abaddon’s decapitated head. Alaina imitating her daughter: “Whoa, momma you’re so beautiful! What happened to your head?”

Tim Omundson sent a message after seeing pictures of Alaina, Kim, Bri, Matt and Rich hanging out in Sydney to say “looks like you’re having fun without me.” She sent a message back saying “we really miss you!” and he replied “doesn’t look like it.” :D

Alaina thinks Abaddon and Rowena would have made a great team. Crowd cheers.

Her favorite scene was when she got to beat up Mark Sheppard. Also loved when she got to walk into the church and say “Hello, boys.”

About when she arrived on SPN set the first time & saw Jensen & Jared: “Goddamn, have they been through make up yet? They’re so pretty.”

She’d met Jensen before working on Supernatural, their first conversation was about Vanilla Ice. *laughter*

“Jared gives you a hug and you feel like you’re gonna break.”

Fan asks who she likes best out of cast. Alaina: “All! Why do we have to pick?”

Abaddon’s neck wound only takes 5 minutes to apply. They get made in advance, attached, and blended in with make up. They come in a pizza box. Alaina mimed opening a pizza box and making a horrified face.

At a con in London, Alaina was walking back to the green room when she saw a teenage girl hyperventilating and crying in a corner, being consoled by a friend. She thought “oh no, I hope she’s okay.” Kept walking. Saw another girl. Then another. When she got to the green room, Jensen was just hanging out.He asked if she wanted a drink. “I was like, you asshole! I just walked in you wake and you left a bunch of little girls crying!”

If she wasn’t an actor she’d probably work in fitness or something to do with skincare, or just be a full time mom as she has four kids. “So much laundry.”

If she could be another character: “Crowley. He always looks so comfortable.” She likes his coat.

After working on the SPN set she got a bad sore throat, finally realized that she’d been subconsciously trying to match their low tones. “I don’t have to do that! I’m a girl!”

Shooting Abaddon’s death was long and difficult. At one point, she forgot to act because she was so distracted by the harness and rigging. Camera operator asked her, “does that hurt?” “No, I’m fine.” “No--I mean your character.” *laughter*

An eleven year old kid in the audience asked his first bizarre question of the day: “What is the scariest thing that happened to you as a kid? On public transport.” Alaina: “Who are you?” *Alaina & crowd laughing because wtf kid*

Alaina: “I got groped a lot in Tokyo. Maybe you didn’t need to know that.”

Grew up in Canada. “We’re supposed to be bilingual, but we’re not.”

On behalf of @justanotheridijiton, I asked Alaina: We know that you shadowed Phil Sgriccia on LOTUS, as Rich did on a few episodes in season 9 & 10 before directing in season 11. I was hoping you could tell us a little about the experience, if you have plans to shadow again, and who we need to bug online to help you get a directing gig in season 13. Alaina said she learned a lot about the process from Phil Sgriccia, and from friends who have directed on Stargate and Arrow who have offered advice. She had a long conversation with Rich on the flight to Melbourne about directing, too. Unlike Rich, Alaina hadn’t directed anything before she shadowed Sgriccia, so she still feels like she’s got a lot to learn. She wants to shadow a few more times before she jumps into directing. When she’s ready to do that, she’ll let us know who we need to pester on twitter.

Kim & Bri

Kim started off the panel with a wonderful message of acceptance and just pure excellent Kim things that I could barely write anything down because I couldn’t see past my own tears. The gist was this: “You are safe, you are loved.”

If Jody and Donna met Kim and Briana?

Bri: “Jody and Kim would high five a lot.”

Kim: “Jody would think Kim was too loud. “You’re a lot.””

Bri: “Donna would be scared of Kim in an intensely fascinated way.”

Bri made a comment about if she met Jody; Kim got jealous.

Bri, laughing: “You’re jealous of your own character!”

Kim, stomping: “No! She’s mine!”

Kim about Wayward Daughters/Wayward as Fuck: “This shit is crazy! The scope is insane.”

What the fandom has done with it is incredible.

Kim said that a lot of things are like a pyramid, where there’s one person at the top and everyone kind of follows. She said that Wayward Daughters is more like a chain, with people being willing to grab the hand of the person next to them. :’)

Kim: “It makes me honest. Makes me show up.”

Bri: “It makes me responsible with what I say.”

Bri laughed and added that she doesn’t mean that irt cursing. Talked about her daughter a little, how she doesn’t care if she starts cursing as long as it’s not in the middle of a quiet restaurant or something. “I’m not worried about raising a lady, I’m worried about raising a woman.”

Kim and Bri have fantasized about the idea a spin off.

Bri talked about it in terms of “when, not if” and encouraged Kim to do the same

Kim: “Positivity is not natural but I’m trying.”

Their idea is for Jody to fuck up and lose her job. She’d get transferred to another police station, knock on the door to meet her new boss: it’s Donna. Bri as Donna: “JODES! JODIO!” *crowd cheers*

Kim and Bri got distracted by the control panel for the lights/projector in front of the stage. Kim: “You know how hard I’m working at not touching buttons?”

Bri loves how excited Donna was when she killed her first vampire.

Donna started out lost, insecure. She grew through meeting Jody and that gave her confidence & skill to help the boys the next time they worked together.

Bri is shooting her next episode in February!

She would love to see Donna come into her own, and would love if it didn’t involve a man.

The donut scene in The Purge was Bri’s first scene. She was 6 months pregnant, and very nervous. Phil Sgriccia pitched the idea of Dean and Donna eating donuts--it wasn’t in the script. In the rehearsal she took a giant bite and got powdered sugar all over her costume. After they finished running through the scene, Jensen looked at her and said “Wow, you really went for it, hey?” and Bri thought “Oh shit, was there only one donut?!”

There was not only one donut. They probably went through two dozen. She was eating them at first, but after the third they started using the spit bucket.

Bri started to move to another topic but Kim stopped her--”there’s more to that story!”

Bri: “Jensen always let me spit first.” Crowd: “Aww” Kim: “In the US, everyone goes straight to the gutter.” *crowd laughs*

Kim & Bri: the SPN crew is unbelievable.

Kim’s hashtag for this year: #JesusCanYouGiveMeAnHour?

Bri’s hashtag: #JOBFAMILY (yelling)

Bri: “2016 was a fuckin’ doozy.”

On Saturday night, Kim, Bri, Alaina, Matt and Rich were all in a van being driven somewhere, talking about the responsibility that comes with different inspiration movements, and Matt brought up the #you thing he does on Instagram and Twitter. When he brought it up, he said “I do that hashtag “you” shit now.” Alaina said “WHAT?” thinking that he was saying “You shit now” was the whole hashtag.

Bri: “Alaina is so literal.”

Bri said the idea for a spin off with Jody and Donna first came up when she was shooting The Purge. She was shooting the scene where the Pishtaco is doing its fat-sucking thing, and Phil Sgriccia came and stuck his head under the table to talk to her. He said “I have an idea” and told her there’s another Sheriff character on the show, and he thought it would be cool if they could meet at police convention or something. Brad Creasser said, “sounds like a spin off!”

Louden Swain bet on who is going to say fuck more often out of Kim and Briana at every one of their panels.

*context is completely lost for this note, so please message me if you remember so I can add it in* Rich was standing with his hand on his hip and Briana told him “I’m gonna punch your arm hole so hard.”

Kim’s other spin off fantasy is for Wayward Daughters as a kind of Hogwarts for hunters. First started thinking about it while shooting Hibbing 911. “We can’t stop Claire from hunting, so we might as well train her.” She described Alex and Claire as polar opposites.

She said Benny could come back to help teach them how to hunt vampires. Garth could come and they could learn to hunt werewolves. Rowena should bring Charlie back. *crowd cheers*

Kim says best part of this would be that main cast from SPN could have cameos without taking them away from their roles there. Sam and Dean would visit, Cas would visit “because that’s his daughter.”

*pause while I cry about how much I want this*

Kim: “Rich doing accents makes me feel like a genius.”

Briana tried to do an Australian accent. Kim: “Just keep letting me watch your mouth.”

Someone in the crowd started using a bubble wand. Kim: “Bubbles!”

Kim: “I just want all the bubbles to be friends.”

Bri: “Let’s take back being girly. Nothing wrong with that if that’s what you want to be.”

Kim went out into the seats to talk to a little girl who was too shy to ask her question in front of the whole crowd.

Fave thing that has happened on set?

Bri: getting asked back

Kim: “My favorite thing is this.”

Bri: “When you guys say thank you, it’s hysterical because you guys have saved me way more than I have ever saved you.”

*pause while i cry some more*

About the slumber party events they’ll be doing at Creation Cons next year, Bri says “We should bring a fight choreographer.” Kim: “Or a self defence coach.”

Kim: make up and machete night!

Second bizarre question from another young dude in the audience: “If you could pick an animal to own, what would it be? And if you had to eat it how would you?”

*crowd laughs with air of wtf*

Kim loves goats so much that she has a favorite goat she has never met. His name is Horace and he lives in New Zealand. If Horace had died of very old age after a long and happy life, and she was being forced to do so, she would have him as a curry over rice.

Bri: “I want a dragon.”

Kim: “I really love pigs too.”

Bri: “They taste delicious.”

The Furiosa photo shoot was all Meg’s (Stardustandmelancholy) idea. She mentioned it to Kim and Kim went YES.

Kim went scouting for locations and got a Furiosa costume off Amazon.

Kim and Bri noticed Alaina sitting in crowd and brought her back on stage.

Kim has two shelves full of fan art at her house. She’s constantly amazed by the talent in fandom. “Y’all keep me humble.”

Kim thinks she’s a Hufflepuff, Osric keeps telling her she’s a Ravenclaw, every test she’s ever taken tells her she’s a Slytherin. Bri has no idea what she would be--half the audience: HUFFLEPUFF.

Kim firmly says that Jody is a Gryffindor

Kim stand by putting parmesan on popcorn.

Fan asks: “If it had to happen, how would you want your characters to die?”

Bri would like Donna to have death by pleasure. Alaina: “I could make that happen”

Kim wants Jody to know death is coming, and for her to “take all the motherfuckers down with her.”

Bri’s mysteriously bruised and swollen ankle has healed--her doctor had no idea what caused it. She’s just glad it healed in time for her to make the trip to Australia.

Matt & Rich

The guys came out before the video introduction stopped playing. Rich announced “Me. Me. Matt. Me. Matt.” as different shots of them appeared.

Matt: “We’re not gonna make a lot of sense, but we’ll do it on purpose, so you’re welcome in advance.”

Same kid from before repeats pet-that-you-have-to-eat question. Rich: “I would take a human as a pet and then eat them.” Half the crowd: eugh! Rich: Don’t eugh me!

Rich: Kings of Con has many familiar faces, sadly not Bri because she didn’t have a US work visa when they were shooting.

Most valuable thing gained from working on SPN? Matt: Richard Speight Jr.

Matt: “Christmas is all the time on KoC set. Thank you God, I mean Rob Benedict.”

Fan: “Hi Matt, how’re you Cohen?” Matt: “What a Cohen-cidence.”

If it were up to Matt, he would have taken the Volkswagen van instead of the Impala so he could have slumber parties with the boys in the back.

Rich: *wtf face*

Matt clarifies: “This is my me crush, not my John incest. I’m not shipping it.”

Fan: is there anything you’d like to see your characters do that they haven’t already done? Rich: Live.

*Rich starts an Under the Sea singalong*

I asked Matt if seeing Rich & some of the other cast get so much enjoyment from directing has tempted him to give it a shot himself. Matt said it definitely has, and he’d love to direct someday. He’s proud of his friends for what they’ve done so far. He said that for now he’s just watching from afar and learning a little more. It’s something he’d like to do later in his career.

Rich: directing his friends on KoC was really comfortably because it’s a new show & all of the cast and crew are learning the ins and outs of it together. On SPN the crew have 12 years of experience working together, so even though the cast/crew want their friend to succeed there’s also expectations to live up to that make it a little more stressful than KoC. He added that the SPN crew are the most forgiving crew he’s worked with. A good bunch of people.

At some point in the panel, someone brought up #YouShitNow and Rich & Matt started making everyone say it before they asked a question. If someone asked a question without saying it first, they’d make them say it and then ask again. The eleven year old from before went to ask a question--they said “say poop instead” but the kid said shit anyway before asking Matt about the sweet potato from Kings of Conversation. I have no idea what the actual question or answer were because everyone was laughing too much.

#YouShitNow became the catchphrase of the con that carried through into karaoke and too many tweets.

Post-panels

I won a thing! A gorgeous drawing of Matt & an autograph ticket. I was stoked because I wanted to get a photo op & autograph with him (and Rich and Alaina) but ended up spending more than planned on the Starlight donation gifts and couldn’t afford them. This made up for it! I’m yet to figure out the name of the artist (though they signed it, so I’ll work it out and message them) but they did a wonderful job.

Saw Jules from @superwiki across the room and threw myself at her before she went home because I’m a weirdo.

Autographs

Matt was sitting in the most intense beam of sunlight, and kept edging over into the space behind Alaina’s seat to stop himself from melting. I said something to him about the game from the start of the day but ????? no idea what it was or what he said back. It’s just gone. Big old blank space. I guess he must have smiled at me or something.

Kim was like…. 10000 fire emojis wrapped around a bar of solid gold. She looked up at me and said “Whoa, awesome hair!” I ascended to a higher plane of existence. Not sure if or when I will return to Earth, but also not sure if I care.

Bri is really amused by the apparent Australianism, “How’re you going?” I listened to her talking to the girl ahead of me about this for a few minutes, thought to myself “don’t say the thing” and then immediately and instinctively said it when I stepped up. She said it back to me then giggled at herself. She’s made of pure joy??? I love her.

Karaoke

Idk you guys, I was drunk.

There were puppets.

The speakers cut out at one point and we discovered that everyone in the room knew all the lyrics to A Whole New World.

Matt sang Kenny Loggins’ Footloose and played a lot of air guitar.

Kim climbed onto the window ledge and shook her butt against the glass.

There was a weird version of Total Eclipse of the Heart that turned all dancey halfway through and fucked literally everyone up for a good ten seconds, and then Bri started like…. marching to the beat and we all figured it out.

Kim tried to high five this one girl like a dozen times but the girl didn’t notice and Kim was a sad panda.

I accidentally touched Matt’s sweaty biceps and I wasn’t nearly as grossed out as I should have been. Who am I?????

Rich kept slipping into an old-timey prospector voice.

Drinks were drank and songs were sung.

And that’s it! I’m sure I missed some bits and pieces, but them’s the breaks.
