FMA readthrough - Volume 20, part 4

May just separated from the rest of the group and her face looks quite sad as she was pretty hesitant to leave the group.

Now, that she arrived in Youswell again, she meets some old acquaintances.

And I gotta say: I'm so moved by their cordiality! It's so nice of everyone to make sure May has a place to stay, a warm meal and a chance to have a hot bath. They even intend to cut the work short for that day, just to spend some time with little May! Our world needs more people like that and I know that I should follow that advice just as much. No wonder she is just as moved as I am:

It hurts her to think how nice those people are to her and that she is turning her back on Amestris' problems to return home.

That, of course, does not go unnoticed by Envy... But lets focus on his design in this panel. I'm not entirely sure whether he looks pitiful because his whole appearance is just a wimpy little tadpole, or if he really shows compassion and empathy for her for a second. I'd think it's the latter, with his hands folded together and his big eyes staring at her almost incredously because she has those kind of feelings and Envy would never understand it (thus being jealous of her).

He wouldn't be a homunculus if he didn't try to use the weakness for his own good. There goes the moment of my compassion for Envy.

With that, Envy speaks exactly what May needs to hear: Though she'd go back to Central and help her friends, she won't abandon her quest to save her Clan. The situation Scar put her in with handing her Envy was chosing her clan over her new-found friends and it troubled her deeply. Envy provided her with the solution for that dilemma: She could go back and still find what she needs to help her clan.

I adore her determination she shows after she made up her mind and listened to Envy because it shows just how much she loves and likes the persons she just met even though she knew them for such a short time. This manga is so much about human relations, how they are affected by the tiniest circumstances and situations and how deeply they can be build and tightened in a couple of weeks (or days as the people in Youswell show us).
