you were now standing in your room, between your mark and some other variant of him. you didn't really know what to do when mark had come to find you in your room, but you knew you needed to keep space between both of them.

"(y/n), what are you doing...?" your mark asks you, and for a moment, you see a flash of irritation in his eyes. "he's not me, he's not safe to be around, he needs to go to the gda."

you feel the other mark shift at the mention of being turned into the gda, and your heartbeat picks up at the tension filling the room.

"mark, he's- he didn't hurt me, it's fine," you speak.

"you heard him," the other mark began, "i never hurt him, i just came to take him back with me." but the moment he said that, you could see mark's body tense up, eyes looking at you in disbelief.

"(y/n), come. here." mark doesn't sound angry, but scared, as if he was going to lose you in that very moment.

"or you could stay with me (n/n), please?" he had used the nickname your mark had for you... but your mark stopped calling you that after middle school. and his voice holds so much tenderness, your body doesn't know whether to go forwards or backwards.

you're stuck.

but before you could even snap out of whatever shock you were in, an orb came up behind the mark variant, a flash, and then nothing. he had disappeared as soon as he had found you.

now your mark had let out a deep sigh of relief. "okay, the gda must have gotten my signal, you're alright now-"

"mark, what the hell!?" you shout out before you could even think. you see mark almost take a step back at your voice, but he quickly recovers.

"what do you mean? i just saved your ass-"

"no you just... you just-"

he cocks his head to the side. "i just what (y/n)?"

"you just think all about yourself, don't you? when i finally have something good, you want to take it away," you say cooly. you know what you're saying might sound like nonesense to him, but it holds truth.

"i didn't take anything away from you, i just care-"

you let out a snark laugh. "oh you care? i thought you stopped caring after you started dating amber." there, you said it, and it felt good to say it. you look up at mark as you blink the tears out of your eyes, and by the look on his face, you know that he knows you're right.

but you had really started drifting after that night on his rooftop.

"so now, when there is some version of you, that actually loves me, is out there, you ruin it because 'it isn't safe'? yeah, some friend you are." it hurts to say, but you're angry.

angry that you had something so close, but now so far.

"i love you."

your breath hitched, and you finally really looked into his eyes. they're full of tears, but also full of something you've been begging to see for years.

love. they're full of love.

"i do love you (y/n), i just... i was so fucking scared-" his voice breaks, and your body moves before you can think. you walk over and hold him as he sobs into your shoulder. "i was scared."

"was it your dad? you could have told me that night instead of-"

"i know, i was being stupid." and you agree with that, but you still feel a bit hurt.

mark told you that he was confused, that the night you two had shared together had been wrong, a mistake. and even though you put on a smile, told him that you understood, you were crushed.

"i didn't want my dad to find out about you, use you as blackmail... but i wasn't ready to mess up our friendship either," mark whispers the last part quietly.

you take your hand and move it to lift up mark from your shoulder. brushing a thumb under his eye, cleaning away any tears. "well, i love you mark. i love you. but you have to be real with me okay? what do you want?"

"i want you-" and that's all that you needed to hear. you closed the gao between the both of you, crashing your lips against each other in a desperate attempt to drown out the outside noise of the world.

after what seemed like forever, you slowly break apart from him. "then from here on out start acting like it okay?"

he shakes his head, pupils dilated as he stares at you.

you smirk. "i missed you."

he moves to place his forehead against yours. "i missed you too."

the sounds of crickets and other night animals surround you as you stumble your way through the campgrounds. even though you're half asleep already, you make note to stay out of the illuminated parts of camp and stay in the shadows. you're not willing to get your dessert privileges taken away again. (chiron really doesn't play about curfew) you pass by some of the older camp counselors, but they don't pay you no mind anyways. you're usually one of the only campers that stay out past curfew and as long as you don't cause any trouble they couldn't care less.

but it wasn't like you wanted to be out at ungodly hours of the night, you couldn't sleep. like at all.

no matter how much you twisted and turned, no matter how much you flipped your pillow on the cold side- sleep was not trying to take you tonight. it was times like these where you really wished your father had granted you the power to make yourself fall asleep instead of just other people.

maybe you make an offering about that...

anyways, the feeling of soft soil meeting the soles of your shoes bring you out of your thoughts. rubbing your eyes, you look up and see the lake- the moonlight shimmering off of the water. the dark blue hues of the night making the sight all the more relaxing.

getting closer to the edge of the lake, you sit on one of the benches but can't shake the feeling of someone behind you. it didn't bother your sleepy body much because sometimes counselors walk around and do checks.

but something was still off.

"spying on people is a bit creepy y'know?" you say aloud- to whoever was creeping around.

you waited a moment, then another. you really weren't in the mood for anyone's games- you just wanted sleep.

sighing, you wrap the blanket you brought around your body, resting your head in the palm of your hand. "or don't come out. i don't really-"

"why are you out here so late?"

wait. you know that voice.

popping up, you turn your body toward the voice. only to be met with a certain son of poseidon. he's holding one of your older hoodies in his hands and has his other hand on his hip as he stares you down with a questioning look. "it's cold out here too- that blanket is not enough."

"how did you even-"

"you come down here when you can't sleep, also you're 'sneaking around' skills need more work." percy cuts you off. his words hols no real annoyance though, you could tell that he really just wanted to make sure you didn't sleepwalk anywhere... again.

"y'know," you begin. "i would expect this from annabeth, not you."

he pulls the edges of your blanket up onto your shoulders where they have fallen and raises his eyebrows at your comment. "who says she's not here either?"

percy moves his head and looks behind you. you follow his line of sight and see her peeking out behind on of the trees with a smile.

maybe you should be more aware of your surroundings.

"we didn't want to scare you so we-"

"you guys followed me?" you finish for her, a small laugh coming from your mouth. you're not too surprised though, because usually they make you sleep in poseidon's cabin when your insomnia gets really bad. one time they even got you to take melatonin- which surprisingly worked but you were too stubborn to admit that to them.

annabeth makes her way over to you and percy and sits on the opposite side of you. her curls gently brushing your arms as she leans on your shoulder. "we should head back soon, you'll sleep better with us."

percy hums in agreement, and you couldn't lie- you were getting sleepy by the minute. it reminded you of a saying where when you're around people you trust or feel safe with, your body gets sleepy. you liked to think that percy and annabeth were your people and that they thought the same about you.

and by the looks of it, they definitely do.

"you falling asleep on us?" percy softly hums into your ear. "we shoudl go back now. i mean we are out past curfew."

"way past curfew." annabeth adds.

you only offer a nod in agreeance, mostly because your body was so tired that was all you could really do.

the walk back to percy's cabin was a blur, but they were right- you definitely felt more comfortable in the cabin. or maybe it was because they both held you so gently, your body finally allowed you rest.

whatever it was, you were just happy it was with them.

it had been an interesting week to say the least.

there had not been a lot of serious battles to deal with, but more petty crimes since summer had left and winter was settling in. but that's not what had made it interesting.

the real interesting part was how distant your boyfriend had gotten. you two usually were paired up when being sent out on patrol, which hadn't changed but mark's demeanor was throwing you all the way off. he kept the convo to a minimum, didn't return your affection the same, and only really spoke to you when cecil had you two do a debrief.

sure, you were one to understand that everyone- especially mark- needed breaks sometimes, but for goodness sakes you were a couple. and you didn't want to assume the worst, but he just kept backing away from you.

although he only ever really did this when he was stressed out real bad.

so like any amazing boyfriend would do, you spoiled him like all hell.

making sure his snack drawer was filled and more, cleaning up his room for him when he got way too busy, cooking him meals so that he could eat when he got home, hell you even got him a limited time comic from depop. (you were getting desperate okay?)

and the more you did it, the more you realized that you loved doing things for him- but you couldn't figure out why he was so-

"why do you keep following me around?" mark is standing in front of you, seemingly having you cornered in your own room. but at least he was talking to you now.

"i should be asking why you haven't been following me around." you state. "you're in one of your moods so god forbid i'm a good boyfriend and try to help with your stress."

you study his face, and by the way his cheeks go red and he looks at anywhere but you, you know you hit it spot on.

"we said we would talk to each other if we were stressed out mark, what happened?" you say in a soft tone.

mark begins to walk over to you and sits down on the edge of your bed, letting out a sigh. "i'm not going to bring something up if i can handle it-"

"baby we are together," you interrupt him. "which means we help each other, you ain't slick- i can tell when you're goin' through it- but pushing me away isn't fair."

and by the looks of his face, he hated that you were right.

"so- what're you stressin' for?"

a beat passes.

then another.

"my birthday is coming up, and my dad isn't here."

there it is.

now, you aren't really shocked about him mentioning his father- but he hadn't really told you all the details on their fight that lead for omniman to just dip outta nowhere. you just figured he'd tell you in due time. "talk to me mark," you whisper as you drag him towards you.

he eventually leans his head onto your shoulder, not caring for the way your locs brush against his face. "i just- i mean we've had our differences but- i still love him you know?"

the way his voice cracks makes your heart drop. you hold him tighter, trying to find the right thing to say to him. "it's okay to love someone and still need to keep them at a distance, you're not crazy for feeling how you feel," you whisper into his ear.

"but you can't let your emotions eat you from the inside out, baby, you're just gonna end up hurting yourself."

"and you," he murmurs quietly- so quiet that you almost missed what he said entirely.

you kiss the side of his head and rub your hand up and down his back. "you'll never hurt me mark, i understand you better than you think. you needed space and now you need someone to talk to," you speak. "so here i am- you think i would be here if you really hurt me?"

mark doesn't speak, but he let's out a small noise that mimics a 'no', so you go along with it anyways.

"i love you (name)."

"i love you too, next time just talk to me yeah?"

he hums, and let's you hold him until he falls asleep on you. and now you not only finally figured out what was wrong with your boyfriend- but you had to make this birthday the best one yet.

you hear the knock before you see him.

it’s soft. hesitant.

like he’s not sure he deserves to be here. you open the door and mark’s standing there, shoulders slumped, hoodie soaked through with blood and rain. his eyes are glassy. his lip is split. he looks like he’s been dragged through hell.

“mark-”

“i didn’t know where else to go,” he says, voice barely above a whisper. “i didn’t want to be alone.”

you step aside. he walks in like he’s afraid the floor might reject him. he doesn’t sit. he paces. his hands tremble. you offer him water, a towel, a place to rest. he ignores all of it. “i messed up,” he says, his voice holding a slight tremor. “again. i tried to save a family and I couldn’t. i was too slow. too weak. too-”

“stop,” you say. he does. but his eyes are wild. desperate.

“i keep trying to be what they need. what you need. but i’m not enough. i’m never enough.” you step closer. “you think i need you to be perfect?”

“i think you deserve better than someone who keeps failing.”

you reach out, fingers brushing his wrist. he flinches like he’s not used to being touched gently. “i don’t want perfect,” you say. “i want you.”

mark drops to his knees. not dramatically. not theatrically. he just sinks, like the weight of everything finally pulled him down.

“i need you to say it,” he whispers. “say you want me. say i’m not just some broken thing you feel sorry for.” his voice cracks a bit at the end of his sentence and it makes your heart all the more fonder. you kneel in front of him, hands cupping his face. “i want you,” you say. “not because you’re strong. not because you’re a hero. because you’re mark. because you’re mine.”

his breath catches. his hands grip your shirt like he’s afraid you’ll vanish. “i think about you every time i fly,” he says. “every time i bleed. every time i wonder if i'll make it back. you’re the only thing that keeps me grounded.” you press your forehead to his. “then stay.”

“i will,” he says.

“if you’ll have me.” you kiss him. it’s not perfect. it’s messy and wet and full of everything you’ve both been too scared to say.

but it’s real.

and for the first time in weeks, mark stops shaking. later, he falls asleep on your couch, curled into your side like he’s afraid you’ll disappear in the night.
