🏳️⚧️ Pride Month Appeal: For Us, Pride Is a Fight for Survival 🏳️🌈
Hello,
My name is Shafi, a queer refugee from Uganda currently seeking asylum in South Sudan. I live alongside other LGBTQIA+ refugees in Gorom refugee camp, where every day is a struggle to survive.
As Pride Month is celebrated around the world, many people gather in safety, joy, and freedom. We are happy to see those celebrations, but for us, Pride looks very different.
For us, Pride is not a parade.
Pride is waking up hungry and wondering where the next meal will come from.
Pride is living with illness while struggling to access medicine.
Pride is surviving discrimination, persecution, and displacement because of who we are.
Pride is refusing to give up even when the world seems to have forgotten us.
Many members of our LGBTQIA+ refugee community are living with HIV and urgently need ARV medication, food, and proper nutrition. Without food, taking medication becomes difficult and dangerous. Some members of our community are already becoming weak from hunger, illness, and lack of support.
Clean water is scarce. Medical care is limited. Many of us live in fear and uncertainty about what tomorrow will bring.
This Pride Month, we are not asking for celebration.
We are asking for survival.
We are asking for the chance to eat, to access life-saving medication, to drink clean water, and to live with dignity.
If you are able, please stand with us during this difficult time. Your support can help provide food, ARV medication, clean water, and other basic necessities for vulnerable LGBTQIA+ refugees who have nowhere else to turn.

With hope and gratitude,
Shafi
