Asaichi (Ω)

Asaichi has been taking suppressants since middle school, and has subsequently gone through very few heats.

He’s closeted i.e. presents himself as a beta, so if he does go into heat, he completely avoids other people. In Tokyo, only his lifelong friends (bandmates) are aware of his omega status.

Most alpha pheromones are repulsive to him (psychologically), and he has always preferred omega women because he likes to be in the most masculine role possible.

His attraction to Yoru was triggered in part by being drawn to Yoru’s pheromones.

Asaichi tops Yoru most of the time but bottoms when he's in heat.

Yoru (α)

Yoru has a particularly intoxicating alpha scent which makes him even more desirable to fans of all genders.

He experienced love at first sight with Asaichi which was amplified when he was later close enough to catch his scent, and he is extremely drawn to Asaichi’s pheromones over all others.

He’ll take rut suppressants if he needs to keep his temperament stable, but he usually forgets.

Song of Yoru&Asa English/Japanese comparisons

Sometimes I try to read the Japanese version of Yoru&Asa (I don't really fully understand much) but it's sometimes interesting to see the original which might have more nuance or context or possible translations than the official one. This isn't any criticism of the translators btw - they have to make a lot of tough decisions (e.g. accuracy vs. vibes).

"The Song of Yoru and Asa" / "よるとあさの歌" ("yoru to asa no uta")

Kind of an obvious one, but "Yoru" means night and "Asa" means morning. So the title of the book and their relationship pairing is Yoru & Asa (ヨル・朝) but also Night & Morning (夜・朝). Which makes sense for their hair colors too, you know? Related, this is why the Chainsaw Man characters are named Yoru and Asa. They're not named after this YoruAsa or vice versa, it's more of an opposites/complements thing.

"Jesus Christ" / "うわっ………" ("uwah…")

"せやろ" ("seyaro") and "いいんやで" ("iinyade")

Both of these use Kansai dialect ("seya" = "sō dayo"; "yade" = "dayo") which maybe means that Asaichi and Yoru are from the general region around Osaka/Kobe/Kyoto. I'm not really familiar enough with Kansai dialect to tell if he uses it in other places in the books or if it just came out in his dream. Or maybe he just picked up Kansai dialect from somewhere else? I don't know.

"We're roomies" / "同棲…" ("dōsei…")

The word Yoru uses is "dosei" which means cohabitation but usually for an unmarried couple so I read it as him being excited like "we're taking the next step in our relationship :0"

"Keep it in your pants!" / "調子のんな" ("chōshi nonna")

I never really understood the "keep it in your pants" in this context so I looked up the original Japanese and it basically means "Don't get carried away" or "Don't push your luck." Asaichi likes to hear Yoru confirm he loves him but tells Yoru not to be cocky when Yoru asks if Asaichi loves him too lol

"Of course I do" / "すきだよちゃんと" ("suki da yo chanto")

The English translation makes total sense but I like the Japanese more (it translates to something like "of course I love you") because he actually says the word "love" ("suki") itself. Which is even more definitive and romantic, imo.

"Wait! Wait!" / "ちがう、ちがう" ("chigau chigau")

"Chigau" means to differ, to be wrong, to be mistaken. In the panel before this, Asaichi says "I love girls like you," so Yoru is being like "you're mistaken." It comes across less as unwillingness and more as a warning, imo.

"God! You're weird! And clingy! Like, really clingy!" / "いや！キモい！重い！重いわお前！" ("iya! kimoi!! omoi!! omoi wa omae!")

The literal meaning of "omoi" is "heavy." So when Asaichi finds out Yoru dropped out of school and joined a band because of him, he's like goddamn that's way too heavy and intense. Also, "kimoi" is usually translated as "gross" so Asaichi reeeally got the ick from Yoru in that moment lol. Anyway the translators probably used a more context-based translation but I thought the more literal and common definitions were interesting too.

"bae" vs "babe" / 彼ピ vs 彼ピッピ ("karepi" vs "karepippi")

"Did you know bae and babe don't actually mean the same thing?" I was curious about the original meaning. The words used in Japanese were karepi (slang for "boyfriend") and karepippi (it can be even cutesier slang for boyfriend but I think the meaning Kayoi is referring to is "almost boyfriend," basically a situationship afaict).

"Yoru… Is Yoru still out there?" / "アイツ… アイツなにしてんだ…" ("aitsu… aitsu nani shtenda…")

A more direct translation is "That guy… What is that guy doing…" He says "aitsu" ("that guy") instead of referring by Yoru by name. Actually, even once they're dating, Asaichi often refers to Yoru as koitsu, soitsu, aitsu (this guy, that guy).

In the English version, Yoru's internal monologue is partly blocked by Yoru and Asaichi:

God, he looked so hot … finally did it for the first time in our … we even locked eyes while we did it! … azing, I thought I was gonna die …h! Normally he's the only one … cum mu …

In the Japanese version, every character is readable:

"Moan for me. I said, moan!" / "声出せ。出せって" ("koe dase. dasette)

Kind of a small thing but the verb for sex vocalizations doesn't usually translate well directly from Easian languages. He's using the casual imperative (command) form of 声を出す (to speak; to say; to vocalize). 声 means voice, 出 means come out, exit, go out, etc. so like "let out your voice."

"bottom" / ネコ ("neko")

I literally just realized why there's a paw print background behind Yoru in the second panel. The word for "bottom" in Japanese is "neko," which also means cat. (If you're thinking "I thought 'uke' was the word for bottom?", it is actually only used to describe dynamics in BL pairings.

"Sure, but… The guys are here." / "いいけど…いるよ" ("ii kedo… iru yo")

Not really anything super insightful here but the super concise "ii kedo… iru yo" is so funny to me. And isn't it cool that "The guys are here, you know" can be condensed down to "iruyo" in Japanese? Just the verb for "exists" + yo sentence-ending particle ("you know"). Japanese is a very context-dependent language so the subject is often left off.
