Can you tell us about Yu/Sun He and Wu Jing ?
Sun He was a member of Sun Jian's family, probably a cousin, but he was adopted into his mothers family in order to maintain their lineage, so he was known as Yu He during Sun Jian's lifetime. When Sun Jian began recruiting soldiers (perhaps as early as Xu Chang's rebellion, and certainly during the Yellow Turban Rebellion), Yu He joined him and became the commander of his bodyguard.
Yu He fought under Sun Jian in all of his battles, contributing to victories against the Yellow Turbans, the Liang Rebels, the Jing bandits, and against Dong Zhuo, Yuan Shao, and Liu Biao. After Sun Jian's death in 191, he served Yuan Shu and probably was under Sun Be's command. He was transferred to Sun Ce's command around 195 and continued to serve as a trusted general under him.
Sun Ce valued Yu He very highly and the two were extremely close. Because of the great friendship between them, Sun Ce adopted Yu He back into the Sun family, changing his name back to Sun He. Under Sun Ce, in addition to other appointments, he was a magistrate in Wu commandery.
Sun He continued to play a trusted role under Sun Quan. He was one of the commanders in the attack against Li Shu in Lujiang (in 200), and he was subsequently made Grand Administrator of that commandery. He remained on the border for several years and was quite well regarded.
In 204, Sun Quan's younger brother Sun Yi was made Grand Administrator of Danyang, but he was assassinated by some rebels. Sun he was ordered to deal with them and went to Danyang to investigate the situation. Sadly, he was assassinated as well, an unfitting end for a veteran of 20 years. The rebel leaders responsible for the deaths of Sun Yi and Sun He were soon assassinated by Sun Yi's widow, Lady Xu.
Sun He was close with his nephew, Sun Shao (Gongli), who served him as an assistant and subordinate commander. Sun Shao was in Sun He's camp at the time of his assassination, and he took control of his uncle's troops during the chaos his murder caused. He proved to be an excellent commander and Sun Quan allowed him to keep command of these soldiers. He later became one of Wu's most respected commanders and was tasked with guarding against invasions from Xu province, a task which he performed excellently.
Wu Jing was the younger brother of Lady Wu, Sun Jian's wife. Because their parents died when they were young, they were raised by their relatives. Wu Jing joined his brother-in-law when he raised soldiers against the Turbans. He continued to follow Sun Jian during all of his exploits.
After Sun Jian's deaths, he shared command of the Sun family army with Sun Ben. The two of them were treated rather well by Yuan Shu, and the two of them were sent to conquer Danyang in 193. They did so successfully, and Wu Jing was made Grand Administrator of the commandery, while Sun Ben was put in charge of the army with the title of Chief Commandant. During the next two years, they fought skirmishes against the local tribes, often supported by the young Sun Ce, and they earned some distinction. When Liu Yao was appointed to Yang by Li Jue's regime, Wu Jing allowed him to establish himself at Qu'a. de Crespigny theorizes that Wu Jing and Sun Ben wanted to get out from under Yuan Shu's control, so they supported a rival to him in the region.
Liu Yao turned against them and, with a sudden attack, forced Wu Jing and Sun Ben to retreat from the commandery. Joined by Zhou Shang (Zhou Yu's uncle), they attempted to retake Danyang but met with little success. In 195, they were joined by Sun Ce, and they happily ceded command of the army to him. Under Sun Ce's command, they conquered Danyang, Wu, and Kuaiji over the next two years.
In 196, Yuan Shu ordered Wu Jing back north and made him Grand Administrator of Guangling, and he subsequently participated in the campaign against Liu Bei. This campaign ended with Liu Bei's destruction, but Xu province ended up in Lü Bu's hands instead of Yuan Shu's.
When Yuan Shu declared himself emperor, Wu Jing fled south and joined Sun Ce. Sun Ce then appointed him as Grand Administrator of Danyang, and he helped to hold the province against Yuan Shu's counterattack. Because of the alliance between Sun Ce and Cao Cao, the Han court confirmed Wu Jing's position in Danyang. He spent the next several years working to consolidate the Sun family's hold on Danyang and passed away in 203. He was immediately succeeded iN Danyang by his nephew, Sun Yi, but Sun Yi was assassinated by some rebels. Sun He led a force to Danyang to deal with them, but he was assassinated as well. These rebels were, in turn, killed by Sun Yi's widow, Lady Xu.
