As you approached your cabin, you heard groans. Terrifying hisses and cries for help. Sounds that only a thick forest surrounding you could possibly muffle from unauthorized ears.

You tried to open a door. First one lock, then another and finally a third, blocking a temporary chain. Just in case... Little safety precaution.

You took a deep breath, closed your eyes and, inspired by a temporary burst of courage, pushed the wooden door open.

You blocked his path with one leg and then looked out the door again. You reached for a package you had left outside earlier and quickly slipped it inside.

With a big picture of a predatory beast tearing apart some old lady's chicken coop. Journalists would certainly not spare exaggerated adjectives to describe the incident in headlines. Surprisingly however, he didn't even try to move. He was probably struggling with remorse. You grimaced. Maybe you were a little too harsh. But he asked you for it... You scratched Yuanwu behind his floppy ear and slowly began to take off your outer clothes.

-Shall we eat something?

You ask, trying to mimic the excited voice that Yuanwu automatically reciprocates. He jumps up and down and shakes from side to side.

It's a difficult time. At first, you couldn't cope yourself. The way Yuanwu could drift away because of his wolf instinct. The way he became absent. It wasn't normal or exactly comfortable. You felt foolish approaching him like that. In any other situation, you would have considered it inappropriate. Almost disrespectful. You wouldn't treat another person this way. But Yuanwu was not a human, he was a werewolf undergoing a transformation. And despite this dehumanization, in the glow of a moon, you could still find your beloved. Feelings still chimed in his eyes. Deep down, he was trying to convey something to you, to communicate with you. But he simply couldn't. His wolf came out to a front and took control, trying to satisfy its lower-level needs first.

But everything will be fine once he eats something. It worked almost the same as with ordinary people. After all, hungry person is an angry person.

You pulled hunted boar out of a bag. It had already been skinned. You didn't want to sentence Yuanwu to this unpleasant sight. He was already tormented by the fact that his instincts told him to take the lives of "innocent creatures." And you wanted to limit the mess as much as possible. You already knew that after this whole incident, you would have to thoroughly scrub rotten planks of burgundy blood stains.

You pushed the raw meat towards a werewolf and he immediately pounced on it. Began to bite into it, tugging at it, scattering it to the sides and loudly munching at the same time. Seeing him satiate himself, you checked one item off your list. You could push yourself off the floor and went to an annex in order to soak a rag and additionally fill a bowl with clean water.

Yuanwu was only trying to satisfy his needs. His hunting instinct. Horrific scenes that were unfolding in your living room could not compare to the satisfaction of a real hunt. Adrenaline rush that comes with chasing your prey. Excitement when you get close to it. Temptation when at the last moment it slips from your claws on a sharp turn. And total satisfaction when you finally sink your fangs into it.

But Yuanwu was afraid. He was afraid of being caught. He was ashamed of what he became during the full moon. And he didn't want anyone to see him like that. Except you, he trusted you. But you had to work hard to earn that trust.

You wanted to help Yuanwu. You were a forester and in addition a skilled hunter. You were used to shooting. It was also more humanitarian. Plus you knew which animal you should take the life of at any given moment. When their population began to exceed safe numbers, when they began to pose a threat to people. Breaking through their fences, devouring their gardens and attacking in fear. You were also aware of their breeding season, thus preventing harm to youngest.

When Yuanwu was done, you moved with him to the mattress near a fireplace. Gently laid his head on your lap and slowly cleaned corners of his mouth with a damp cloth.

-I'm sorry

His quiet, hoarse voice barely reached your ears. He opened his eyelids with difficulty and looked at you timidly. His pupils slowly began to narrow and return to normal. And the intense yellow glow of his irises faded into a oblivion.

-I didn't mean to

There was no reproach in your voice. Only concern and boundless love.

You softly squeezed his head, slid out from under his weight and moved Yuanwu to a nearby pillow. Werewolf whimpered softly at your absence. But he immediately scolded himself for it. He had already caused you so much trouble...

Less than a minute later you returned with a glass. You helped your boyfriend up and he quickly emptied the entire contents of a glass.

Embarassed, he shook his head firmly.

This time, Yuanwu nodded vigorously in agreement, which was followed by loud thumping of a wagging tail against a floor.

When man realized what had just happened he whined, disappointed in his own behavior.

You held out your hand in an inviting gesture and Yuanwu hesitantly moved towards it. He snuggled up to you gently and kissed you lightly on inner side of your palm. That was the only way he could show his gratitude to you now.

You were lying on mattresses again. Surrounded by hundred animal furs and pillows stuffed with goose feathers. And Yuanwu once more found himself on your lap. You were less tense now. You knew you had taken care of everything that was most important. And the worst attack had passed long ago, before you went out hunting. Relaxed, you began combing his head. You carefully dipped a brush into his thick hair, which during transformation resembled fur more than anything else. You slowly detangled the knots, trying to avoid his sensitive twitching ears and stroking him in turns to ease the pain a little. Brush, hand, brush, hand, brush, hand. His Midnight Rangers were camped nearby, their fires flickering against the encroaching darkness. But something had caught his attention—a presence that felt out of place.

He stepped forward, his hair swaying behind him. Among the shadows, he spotted you huddled against a tree, knees pulled tightly to your chest. Trembling but defiant, your tear-streaked face was illuminated briefly by the moonlight.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Jiyan said calmly, crouching down to your level. His voice was gentle but firm, like the steady winds before a storm. “This forest is dangerous.”

You flinched but didn’t look up. “I had nowhere else to go,” you murmured.

Jiyan studied you carefully. Your clothes were neat but wrinkled, as if they had been packed hastily. Your hollow, tired eyes spoke volumes—a weight far heavier than anyone your age should bear.

“I can tell,” he said softly, sitting down beside you. “You’ve run from something.”

You hesitated, then nodded. “My mom,” you whispered. “She wants me to be perfect. Good grades, sports, everything. But... I can’t. I don’t even know who I am anymore.”

Jiyan’s gaze softened. “I understand,” he said. “Once, I thought I had to be someone I wasn’t, too. A healer, just like my family wanted. But there comes a time when you have to decide for yourself who you want to be.”

You looked at him for the first time, searching his face for any sign of judgment. Instead, you found quiet resolve and empathy.

“You’re safe here,” Jiyan assured you. “Stay with us tonight. Tomorrow, we’ll figure out what comes next.”

As the night deepened, Jiyan called forth the Qingloong, its ethereal form circling above to guard the camp. For the first time in a long while, you felt a flicker of safety, a storm’s eye amidst the chaos of your life.

Mortefi adjusted his pristine gloves, a frown tugging at his lips. The quiet knock at his workshop door had been an unwelcome interruption. He wasn’t expecting visitors, least of all at this hour.

When he opened the door, the sight before him made him pause. You stood there, disheveled and out of breath, clutching a small bag like it was the only thing tethering you to the world.

“Who sent you?” Mortefi asked sharply, though his tone softened when he noticed your trembling hands.

“No one,” you said, your voice barely audible. “I just... I didn’t know where else to go.”

Mortefi’s brow furrowed. He wasn’t accustomed to unannounced visitors, much less ones who looked like they were on the verge of breaking. He stepped aside, gesturing for you to enter.

“Sit,” he said curtly, clearing a space amidst the neatly arranged tools and schematics. He watched as you hesitated, then sank into the chair, your movements stiff with exhaustion.

“Now,” Mortefi said, crossing his arms, “explain.”

The words spilled out in a rush. “My mom. She wants me to be perfect. I can’t. I don’t even know who I am anymore.”

Mortefi’s gaze sharpened. He saw himself in your words—years of suffocating under expectations, of being shaped into something he wasn’t. He knelt down, his fiery hair catching the light.

“You’re not a tool to be used,” he said firmly. “You’re a person, and you deserve to decide who that person is.”

You stared at him, surprised by the warmth beneath his stern exterior. “But... what if I don’t know who I am?”

Mortefi’s lips quirked in a rare, gentle smile. “Then we’ll figure it out. Together.”

He stood, extending a hand. “Come. I’ve just finished a prototype for a toy dragon. Perhaps it’ll help clear your mind.”

For the first time in days, you smiled—a small, fragile thing, but genuine. And as Mortefi guided you into his world of invention and fire, you began to feel the faint stirrings of hope.

“Sorry,” you mumbled. “I didn’t know where else to go.”

Yuanwu set the towel down, his kind eyes taking in your soaked clothes and trembling frame. “Come in,” he said gently. “You look like you need a warm drink.”

He guided you to a chair near the corner of the gym, where the scent of freshly brewed tea lingered. Handing you a steaming cup, he sat down across from you.

“Take your time,” he said, his voice soothing. “You’re safe here.”

You sipped the tea, your hands shaking slightly. Finally, you spoke. “I ran away. My mom... she expects me to be perfect. I can’t. I don’t even know who I am anymore.”

Yuanwu nodded, his expression thoughtful. “Perfection is a heavy burden,” he said. “It’s not something anyone should have to carry alone.”

You looked up at him, surprised by his understanding. “What if I don’t know who I’m supposed to be?”

Yuanwu smiled, the faint lines around his eyes softening. “That’s the beauty of it,” he said. “You don’t have to have all the answers right now. What matters is that you keep searching.”

He stood, gesturing to the training mats. “Whenever you’re ready, we can start with a lesson. Martial arts isn’t just about strength—it’s about finding balance, both in the body and the mind.”
