It totally looked like final season animation to me, so I went looking for it and it’s this episode: [Season 5, Ep 220: The Final Jouney (The Final Test)]
This scene specifically: Angrily, Kaiba grabs Yugi by the collar and lifts him up, saying he's not going to stand there and watch Yugi give a title shot to his imaginary friend. (Japanese Kaiba tells Yugi he can't beat the other Yugi.) Joey tells Kaiba to drop him, while Yugi says this is something he knows he needs to do. And deep down, Kaiba knows it, too. (Japanese Yugi says this is something he must do.)
I believe Atem has locked himself in his soul room to mentally prepare for the ceremonial duel, which is why he doesn’t take over here.

“I’m going to the store later, do you want me to pick up anything before I come over tonight?” Atem’s voice crackled over the phone’s speakers.
Seto considered for a moment before settling on, “No, I don’t think we need anything at the mansion right now.”
“Okay, see you tonight then, Blue Eyes”, Atem hummed in reply before hanging up.
The dial tone was the only sound to be heard in the ensuing silence. Seto stared at his phone, confused. What did his dragons have to do with the current conversation...?

Depending on what type of dorm you’re in, it depends. Bc the drinking age in Japan is 21, we (international students, age range 22-28) weren’t technically allowed to bring alcohol into our room but more than one of us did anyway
In other words, either Marik or (thief king) Bakura would totally get a hold of alcohol and just bring it with them
(it’s always funny when you tell Japanese people for the first time ‘ah yes we’re allowed to legally drink beer at 16 at home, no strong alcohol like vodka until 18 tho’ and they just ‘so young? ??’ Ah, I’m Belgian fyi)

Yeah I definitely figure he’d be some degree of religious, but I’m still thinking about /how/ religious. Because we had two muslim girls in our class, who were the complete opposite sides of the spectrum, so I have no middle ground knowledge here.
Like, on one hand I headcanon Atem as religious, but do I headcanon him as religious enough to pray multiple times a day? (this would involve getting up before 5am every day, etc. We’d even help our friend find a sort-of-secluded spot when in public whenever it’d be time for her to pray)
But at least the everyday things like not eating pork, fasting, etc, yeah there’s no doubt about that, imo

LOL true, all of the food stalls are hell for people on a diet (or people who just dislike greasy food). A lot of them also sell things with pork, now I think about it.... Though normally in summer you’d just buy all the liquids and stock up on water-heavy foods like cucumber and watermellon and grapes, etc. Summer’s quite a good time to diet, just not to sport :’)
Fun fact: our campus had its own gym, so imagine them just showing up at the same day at the same time constantly and somehow turning it into a competition, again

Me rambling about these topics below the cut, for the sake of others’ dash :’)
First off, thank you!! I’m always worried about incorporating headcanon into fics because there’s inevitably people that disagree. For example, as much as I like reading fic that do portray Atem as the literal King of (All) Games, it sort of dehumanizes him for me. I want to relate to him (and any other character) more, so I tend to go for a more human/imperfect version. The King of Games thing works for him as a character, but it works less for him as a realistic person, if that makes sense?
I already said I really like writing about ‘what is real and what’s not?’ topics earlier too so I’m not gonna expand too much on that. But considering Kaiba has had earlier experience with his mind not being ‘in the right order’ (the whole mind crush thing), he’d definitely doubt himself imo, and hate himself for doubting something he should be proud of (his mind, his intellect, his reason)
The name thing is something I struggle with so much, argh. As much effort as he went through to gain the name ‘Kaiba’, it’s still his last name. And everyone, aside from Mokuba, calls him that, so it creates a certain distance between him and the rest of them.
On the other hand, there is the chance that when Atem especially looks at him and calls him Seto, he might be seeing a ghost of the past and he’d hate that. Even if he does grow to be more accepting of the Ancient Egypt stuff, there’s no way he’d take kindly to being compared to someone else. Even if that someone is a previous version of him. It’s not really him, so it’d be like Atem refuses to acknowledge the current him, in his eyes.
So I tend to go with a middle route? Like, I write both Kaiba and Seto for his own POV, depending on how much of a front he is putting on. Kaiba is used more often for times he needs to look strong, interact with others in public settings, etc. Seto is for softer times, for thinking about his childhood and spending time with his brother, etc.
Whenever I mention him in other characters’ POV, it depends on who/what situation. In this fic I decided I’d set it sorta early on in his and Atem’s relationship, so Atem would still mostly think of him as Kaiba in his own mind, half out of habit and half to force himself to acknowledge the differences between the man before him now and the man he used to know in Egypt. He’d also continue to call him Kaiba in public settings, but imo he’d start to try calling him Seto when they’re alone pretty early on. Testing the waters and all that. Plus he needs all the help he can get to reduce any perceived distance between them, lets be real.
I feel like only calling him Kaiba when he needs to be called out would have a bit of a negative effect though. Like it would only continue to pile all negative associations on the Kaiba name, while Seto remains something seperate. Sometimes it’s Seto that needs to be brought back to reality and realize he is the one being unreasonable, while Kaiba may be used in a teasing manner (I did it in this fic right before Atem pulls him down on the couch). That’s not to say Atem would do this consciously at first, or even at all. He is known to have good instincts after all, he’d sorta feel his way around what name to use when. Trial and error, and practice.
Lastly,
“I do the internet thing too - like the last one was where i found a classic japanese word for the 'withering of winter' (fuyuzare). Fic names are hard - but summaries are worse! XD”
