Sometimes Yuyuka asks for a little space.

It happens; this is what Shishio learns. He nods as Yuyuka says she’ll need to go out, take a break—visit the Potato Girl, maybe hang out with college friends, one night out with drinks, or party. At first, he said no—said, Yu, we can talk this out, what’s wrong? She shook her head and said no, no, nothing’s wrong. Let me go. Let me go.

So he does. Shishio feels heavy whenever she walks out on days like that because he feels like, truly, it had originally been his fault. He lights himself a stick and takes out the whiskey he hides in the top shelf of the cupboard, goes on like nothing has happened. Yuyuka texts, on nights when she is gone—I’m at here, I’ll be here for a while. I’m sleeping at someone’s tonight.

Shishio replies, okay. Take care. No see you tomorrows, no I love yous. Doesn’t make her feel like he needs her, in fact, at home, because the heater’s broken and it’s too cold or too lonely or too quiet.

He plays the old vinyl they got from the thrift store and sings to himself until he falls asleep, above his head the wall of pictures they had set up as a reminder of how much they’ve done together.

Then she comes home. She doesn’t knock, doesn’t say, i’m back, doesn’t call out his name. She’s raw, not dressed, like she’d been looking for home for the longest time. She opens the door with her own keys. Shishio, rolled in the sheets, pretends to still be asleep. She doesn’t turn on the lights. She takes off her shoes, slips off her blouse, bathes in a warm shower for five minutes, then comes out, a loose shirt—always Shishio’s—and then crawls to bed; she doesn’t pull the sheets, just squeezes into whatever’s left.

Only when she is asleep that Shishio turns around and puts his arms around her, glad that she’s back home again.

anniversaire

Shishio comes home with a Black Forest cake and three lopsy daisies he says stands for I love you.

“Happy Anniversary,” he says, grinning. One year ago, she had said she will try her hardest to love him like he loves her. “Didn’t think you’d forget.”

“Didn’t think it’d matter,” she answers. When he frowns a little, she adds: “I mean, it’s not like I didn’t love you before, we ‘became official.’”

He kisses her cheek, places the cake and the flowers on the coffee table. “Good comeback.”

“Don’t tell me something I already know,” she says. She pulls the ribbon around the cake box loose. “Like, I love you. I know you do. I know you always do.”

“Hey,” he chides, “Maybe the flowers mean, Thanks a lot.”

Yuyuka’s finger is close to her mouth, having dipped in the chocolate icing. “Thanks for what?”

His lips turn into a flat line, his eyebrows narrowing slightly. Thanks for—the unwarranted but much needed advice, the umbrellas on days where the sun turns to storm, the coffee in sleepless nights checking stacks of papers, the blanket on cold but early mornings, the lovebirds in the living room that titter whenever she and he holds hands, the laughter even on his worst jokes, and the sweet, sweet kisses, just when he needs it—

“For putting up with me,” he simply says.

“Yeah,” she says, wiping the icing on her finger on Shishio’s cheek. “I love you too.”

“Where do you keep that picture we have from Disneyland?”

“It’s in my wallet,” he says, “why?”

“Nothing,” she says with a grin. “I just haven’t seen it in a while. You never put it up on the picture wall,” she says, pointing to the other end of the room.

“It’s embarrassing. Half the frame is my face.”

“And the other half is me. It was a selfie. On a polaroid camera. What else did you expect?”

He grins. “I kissed you.”

“I didn’t make a funny face, at least.”

He puts the comb down and turns to look at her. He grabs his phone, keys, wallet, a few sticks of cigarettes from the desk, stuffs it into his pant pockets. He takes the few steps from the mirror to the bed, and stands in front of her.

“You look better with your hair messy.” Yuyuka staring at him with scrutinizing eyes.

He’s amused but still, he clicks his tongue. “Okay—why do you really want to see the picture?”

“I dreamt of Disneyland,” she admits. “I flash-backed.”

“We’ll go again on the next long break, if you want,” he says. “If we can. For now, I need to go.”

“Goodbye kiss,” she announces, then Yuyuka presses her lips against his, taking his surprised gasp into a mess of tongues and half-laughter. She doesn’t do this often; she can feel his smile against her mouth. Hands quick, she pulls the instax print-out from the ID slot in his wallet, lips popping when they part from his. He swallows a gulp of oxygen.

“Fast,” he breathes out.

A chuckle; she lies on her back on the bed, arms outstretched, picture in her hands. She stares at it like a long-lost memory. “It feels like it’s been so long.”

He doesn’t argue over the picture, only laughs. He takes a seat on the edge of the bed. “That wasn’t fair, but there, you have it.”

“That was a good kiss, though,” she grins, moving her gaze away from the picture for a moment, then back again.

Suddenly, he crawls over her, in between her outstretched arms, which open and wrap around his musk-smelling deodorant skin, soapy smile, until his face is inches from hers.

“Better stolen, at least,” he says. “Give me another.”

Yuyuka looks pointedly Shishio, crouched down on the floor with a roll of masking tape in his hands, making a small box on the linoleum.

Shishio frowns. “Did you have something in mind?”

“Not really,” she says. But she continues to argue. “We can get the large La-Z-Boy love seat,” she offers “the one with the console in the middle, even. And it’s better, ‘cause we can share, as opposed to you taking it solo.”

“You can sit on my lap,” he says with a snicker, and Yuyuka wants to sit him but she only stands there with her arms across her chest. “Seriously!” he defends.

A sigh is all she can do to contest.

Yuyuka didn’t exactly have any ground to hold her own—just a year out of college, Yuyuka had little experience whatsoever and was still looking for a stable job. She decided to move out of her family home for “several reasons”—that is all she would say, really—and Satsuki was quick to the bait: he had gone and grabbed the chance to offer taking her in.

It was a rush job, actually, very unplanned, spontaneous, instantaneous—very much like everything about them. She only laughs at the memory: looking for a place that was suitable for the both of them in both space and location, lifestyle compromise, deciding how they would split the bills—for now it was all on him, the same man who was still crouched on the floor, plotting his masking-tape border for his dream seat.

She looks around her. The 800 sq.m. condo unit on the 14th floor was a good, cheap find, after all, and the award is his: Shishio had haggled it to a laughable, memorable price. The walls were all pretty much bland and empty, painted pure white, but they’ve talked about getting things repainted in different colors so it’d look livelier, or maybe they’d repaint it on their own, the kitchen yellow, the bedroom a calm blue, or violet, they haven’t decided. They’d talk it out like everything they do.

Maybe the man deserved his space, Yuyuka thinks, even if she really, really wanted that corner to place that—

“Oh, right, Yu,” Satsuki turns around, “what were the other decorations you suggested for the living room?”

Gotcha.

“Oh, I was…” she sits on the arm of the sofa from his old place. “I was thinking of picking up this lovely steel bird-cage from the goods shop.”

“The one downstairs?” he asks.

She nods. “The one where it’s painted white; better for the façade. I was just thinking.”

“A bird cage?” he reconfirms. “We don’t have birds, Yu.”

“I went by the pet shop,” she says, smooth smile, star eyes. “Potato Girl had a lovely pair.”

His eye twitches. “Pair?”

“Lovebirds are always bought in pairs.”

“And where will you put it?”

She looks intently, very dryly, at the marked box on the floor. She pouts a little, just enough to tease him because this isn’t really her thing but she knows how much that stare gets to him and—

“This isn’t how it works,” he says. “You know all my weaknesses and—”

“Yeah,” she says. “Yeah, I know what I do to get people around my finger.”

Three mugs of coffee and one very persuasive make-out session later, Yuyuka’s steel white cage is sitting in the corner and the blue and pink love birds are waiting for pick-up at Suzume’s pet shop.
