One of the stories I enjoyed this Yule was the story of the oak king and the holly king. In Wiccan and Celtic lore, the two kings rule for half a year. On midsummer, the summer solstice and the longest day of the year, the Holly king kills the oak king and begins his rule, the days become shorter and shorter as the Holly kings rules the night. On the winter solstice, yule and the longest night of the year, the oak king returns and beheads the Holly king, signifying the rebirth of the sun and the days then begin to become longer once again until summer when the cycle repeats.
