I agree with the message of "if you can't afford the vet you can't afford the pet" but at the same time I think vet affordability is something that isn't discussed enough? I'm sure there's gotta be a workable solution where vet care is both easily accessible and veterinarians make a living wage
I've read awful anecdotes of vets suffering because a patient couldn't afford care, it hurts the owners, and the animal has less options. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the verbal abuse towards vets decreased even a little if we got affordability under control.
Pets are family members, and when someone can't financially provide for their family most well-run social services will always try their best never to split up a family. There's also countless shelter animals who could have a better quality of life if they were adopted with their health expenses either greatly reduced or fully covered. I know so many people myself included who would adopt an older animal but the vet care is my biggest concern and only reason I don't do it.
You can't afford the pet if you can't afford the vet, but also those pets are sadly being churned out regardless. There's currently a cost of living crisis, and pets provide so many benefits and we've had them around for thousands of years, it's kind of messed up that this too is now locked behind a massive paywall??
I think even if you don't like pets you should consider supporting a state funded pet insurance program or some form of nationalized vet care. I don't want children but I am 100% okay with my taxes paying for childcare, because it makes a healthier society. Everyone would be safer if the animals living among us got the care they needed when they needed it, an animal with untreated pain can be unpredictable and dangerous. It's just the right thing to do.
