yummygreentea replied to your post “Does itachi being so obsessed with Sasuke and loving him so much have...”
I want to think that showing Izumi what she wanted doesn't necessarily equate to him being straight. If she had liked another person i think itachi would have shown her a similar illusion.. Besides, didn't he only see her as a friend at the time?
[[ Okay, I’m going to get serious for a moment.
First of all: if that’s your interpretation of that scene, then by all means I encourage you to keep it. I’m not at all saying you can’t think it’s something else-- I was very specific in handing freedom back to readers. My word isn’t law! While I appreciate questions, I’m not ever going to say people have to agree with me.
But if we’re talking meta wise:
Itachi didn’t know what romance was because he didn’t give it the time of day. Itachi doesn’t have enough social knowledge/experience to know for sure whether he would eventually fall in love or keep his feelings strictly platonic. Again... if you want to read Itachi/Izumi as strictly platonic, please do so!
And context wise... what does it matter? What fight are we winning by trying to argue about his canon sexuality? Or any other character’s? Would you stop shipping Shiita if it was proven by word of God that Itachi was straight? I don’t think so. You shouldn’t stop shipping it just because canon proved you wrong. In fact I think this would just make you ship it harder.
Ino liked Sasuke, then Sai, so she’s straight; but people still ship her with Sakura. Is this a problem? Nope.
Jiraiya is possibly the straightest guy character I can think of, and yet people still ship him with Orochimaru. Is this a problem? Nope, this isn’t a problem either.
Kishimoto’s manga is NOT meant to explore the topic of sexuality. In fact, any same sex scenes were used as eye-candy for the opposite sex. Sakura is canonically a fujoshi, (not to be confused with tumblr’s negative ‘definition’ of the term), and yet... femslash is still popular with Sakura. And again, this is not a problem.
Canon should not be the be-all-end-all of when it comes to who is allowed to ship what and with who. You can say “x is canon” and still do whatever you want within fandom. Draw what you want. Write what you want.
Does it maybe feel like a threat to acknowledge the idea that Itachi might have returned a girl’s feelings? It really shouldn’t, I say again-- canon should not stop you from doing what you enjoy.
I knew someone was going to misunderstand my post-- but hopefully this clears it up? ]]
