The Meeting

Years pass for both children and for their parents it feels as if the time has flown by as they watch them grow. They have reached their five year mark and it is on their birthing day that the pair finally meet for the first time. Rose's father, Sir Relin, had been tasked to watch over the queen and the princess during the celebration while the king took care of some issues with his council. Having no one to watch over Rose he brought her along but told her to stay close and not to disturb the guests.  Now little Rose was a curious one, though a bit shy around strangers, it didn't stop her from exploring new things. So when told to stay put...she found it highly difficult. 

There were so many other children! Most of them young cousins and relatives of the princess while others were other young heirs to kingdoms. She rarely got to see other children in the castle and only small glimpses of the princess. Itching to go play with the rest she kept sneaking glances at her father to see if he was really watching. In her young mind she felt she had a right to have some fun though she knew that if she disobeyed her father he wouldn't be very happy.  While debating whether it was worth upsetting him she felt as if someone was staring at her. Turning her head this way and that she couldn't really see anyone but then she looked over to where the queen was sitting. The princess hadn't moved at all while the other children enjoyed the party. She was just watching with her mismatched eyes and at the moment those eyes were looking right at Rose. 

Without much thought Rose lifted her little hand to wave at the girl, who promptly blushed brightly and turned to bury her face in her mother's side. Well that wasn't the reaction she was expecting from the girl. And they called HER shy! But that didn't deter her at all, instead she smiled and with a glance at her father who was distracted by a couple older boys starting to tussle, she darted toward where the queen and princess were sitting. The queen looked down at her and she froze staring back with her violet eyes wide. This wasn't the first time she met the queen, the woman had found her sitting in the garden with her only toy. A stuffed lion one of the maids made for her. The queen had sat and talked with her which made her a little less scary for the girl but still...it was the queen!

Rose took that as her cue to get a little closer and tilting her head to look at the princess she smiled sweetly and waved again. "Hi! I'm Rose. What's your name?"

Yunai had opened her mouth slightly to respond but nothing came out. Her cheeks seemed stained red as she buried her face again. The other girl didn't seem so scary like her mother said but she wasn't used to other children either. So all the others had spooked her and this one was just...too friendly for her taste. But her mother wasn't going to let her hide forever it seemed, the woman gently nudging her made her turn to look at Rose again. The girl was staring at her expectantly  which made her squirm. A princess should be a little braver...even a little one like her. Her lips parted and she spoke in a soft, timid voice. "Yunai...nice to meet you..."

The other girl beamed at her and was climbing onto the large bench that had been brought out into the large garden area where the party was held. Sitting a small distance from Yunai she continued to look at her curiously which just made the princess squirm more. The queen found it rather amusing and simply observed for now.

"Why don't you play with the others? Are you shy? I'm kind of shy too.  But Daddy says you can't let that make you afraid of stuff. Gotta be brave!" Rose pulled a silly pose like she was flexing her non-existent muscles. The action seemed to make Yunai smile slightly which felt like a small victory for Rose. "Do you like to explore? I love to explore and find new things. I wanna see the whoooooole castle one day!"

Yunai just sat quietly and listened as Rose talked about exploring the castle and the time she found a lizard in the kitchens and how she saved it from being eaten by the castle stray cat. Before she knew it she was just staring wide eyed at her little stories and the queen was watching them both with a bit of surprise. It was the first time she had seen her daughter actually come out of her shell even a little. An idea formed in her mind...one that she would need to talk to Rose's father and her husband about later. Speaking of the father, he was heading their way.

"Your Majesty! I'm so sorry! I hope she hasn't been any trouble. I told her to stay put..." He was giving Rose a stern glare which didn't seem to faze the girl. She just kept chatting with the princess as though nothing was wrong. The queen surprised him though but letting out a laugh.

"Do not worry good knight. She is no trouble. I am quite please with her actually. I hope you'll let her stay and keep my daughter company a while longer." Her smile was sweet and bright which threw the man off guard at first, but he got his composer and cleared his throat before responding.

"Ah...well...of course Your Grace. If it pleases you." He didn't know what else to say. The two little girls were giggling about something and now that he thought about it. It could be good for his daughter to have a friend such as the princess. So why not? Clearing his throat again he moved to stand next to the bench and resume his watchful guard.

After that day Rose and Yunai were practically inseperable. It was agreed that the girls would be each other's companions for as long as they wished. The friendship did them both well as they grew even older. Yunai was still very shy and timid around strangers but thanks to Rose's influence she often was able to face her fears and conquer them. 

Now the pair were reaching their sixteenth birthday, a big day for most youth's. But for Yunai it was a terrifying day. For she would be meeting the neighboring kingdom's young prince who she is told will be her betrothed. Rose, who isn't very fond of the whole idea, will be at her side as usual but will they be able to handle this new change?
