Who will dance with you at the Starlight Ball?

Not that you know at first, not really. They wear a golden mask and a sunburst crown. They stand tall and proud in their fine clothing. Yet despite their regal aura, guests keep their distance. They whisper about the enemy kingdom which worships the sun, instead of the stars. They wonder how someone dares dress like that at the starlight ball. You approach the stranger and they take your hand, leading you into a dance. Soon, the crowds open and stare in awe at your dance. Your dance has presence and elegance, and soon the room is filled with golden light like the first day of spring. You spend the night dancing and talking. They tell you about their home, about palaces of gold and fire, fields of citrine flowers, days of eternal summer. Once the sun rises and all the stars have faded, you will step into the gardens and their dark hair will glow with golden light. They will offer their hand, and welcome you into their kingdom. They will say that you deserve to be adorned with gold under the light of the sun rather than the stars. Will you accept their invitation?

The gardens call to you, away from the music, the gossiping, the cramped dancehall. The fresh air, the bubbling fountains, and the fragrant flowers welcome you. It is there, among the trees and the overgrown rosebushes that you see them, tending to the flowers. Skin like tree bark, hair like ivy, and eyes like warm soil after rainfall. They tell you they have cared for these gardens for many years for they extend into the enchanted forests behind the palace. They take your hand and show you around the gardens, the hidden groves, the bluebird nests, the hidden pool that the nymphs have made their home. They say the nobles barely visit the vast gardens anymore because they think there is a monster dwelling in them that comes out during nights with no moon. You ask if there really is one and they just smile at you. They take your hands and you dance in the middle of the clearing, to the sounds from the forest, to an old tune they hum under their breath. The skies open and it starts raining but you don’t mind as your feet glide over the grass. As you make your way back to the palace, hair sticking in front of your eyes, they will ask you to come back again, in three days. During the new moon. Will you come to see them again?

The crowds part and whispers fill the air when the monarch approaches you and bows their head, extending their hand. Their hair coils around the golden halo that crowns their head. Rings cover their every finger, and sparkle in the light when you take their hand, just as their warm, brown eyes. The music is slow, solemn. The dance steps stiff, lethargic, almost ritualistic. This is clearly an attempt to keep appearances and decorum, which ends in a polite bow and a look into your eyes that lingers for far too long. You will catch them looking at you several times during the ball, but with no time to approach you again. As the ball draws to a close, they will come to you one last time and press a kiss to the back of your hand. The next day, you will receive an invitation to come to the palace, and find them near the gardens, a flower in their hands. No finery, no crown, no jewelry, no guards, but the same look in their eyes. Will you accept a second dance, now that you are alone?
