First of all, let's talk about the Adeuce duo. Since they're, like, always with Yuu from the very beginning, it's only natural that they're the first ones who knows about Yuu's.. condition. (Other than Crowley and maybe the teachers?.. Including Sam, of course.)

Ace will definitely be the first one to find out, with the impromptu sleepover and all that jazz. And yes, he will have a mental breakdown. Knowing that the kid who saved your life and kept you from being expelled is actually some kind of zombie? Big fucking L, my dude. But don't worry, Ace will get over it. (Cue all the undead jokes. Yuusha is not pleased, my guy.)

And of the question on how Yuusha died.. It can be anything really! In my own personal opinion, I'd like to think that our beloved undead Directing Student has tragically murdered. By who, you may ask? IDK, but you have to unlock Yuusha's sad backstory first.

Other than that, it's free game! The CorpseWalker AU is made for my own selfish, gore-loving, dark writer heart. If it's either that Yuu died in a house fire or drowned in a lake, their death is completely up to you and me. (RIP Yuusha, they will never know peace. 😔👊)

I also mentioned that non-human characters could notice something's... wrong with Yuu. Like how the Savanaclaw students recoiling at their scent (because Yuu probably smells like a rotting body), or how Octavinelle students like the Leech twins are thrown off by them (mostly because they can smell the blood underneath their robes). Some Diasomnia fae students will also point out the eerie aura of death and despair around Yuu, especially those who are closely intune with dark energy.

Speaking of non-human students.. What about Grim? He's the one who opened Yuu's gate/coffin and the first character that Yuu officially met.

Well.. At first, Grim did notice that Yuu is strange, especially with the stench of blood and all that. But he was too desperate and focused on getting into NRC than actually figuring out on why Yuu feel like that. Of course, after cooling off, Grim.. finally sees Yuu as they truly are.

They're not some kind of fragile, magic-less human-- No, there's more sinister going on. There's this unmistakable air around that the feline-like monster sees, something dark, and cold, and oh-so malicious. However, Grim is a monster first and foremost, he doesn't know much about humans, and probably doesn't know the difference between Yuusha (the first human he ever met) and the other humans. Flaming Cat Son definitely thinks that Yuusha is like any other human, just a little different, like him. (Oh, Grim, you couldn't be more wrong.)

In conclusion, Yuusha is NRC's local cryptic and I will die on this hill.

And oh yeah, Malleus will definitely be put off by this.. zombie(?) walking around on school grounds. They'll still be friends because Yuusha will relate to Malleus' issue of people being intimidated by him, since technically they have the same problem too? (IDK, it's more like Yuusha have some dark vibes and people can see that, while Malleus is more of a power-level kind of issue.)

yess! i have been waiting a long time to talk about the kiddo.......

-she's a lot smarter than she lets on. yuusha is smartest at things she enjoys doing that also test her brain, like jigsaw puzzles.

-yuusha is very emotionally mature, allowing her to approach social problems with patience. however, she is still a traumatised 15 year old that lived in survival mode for most of her life, so she has CPTSD and suffers from panic attacks and freezing up when scared, as well as dissociation.

-salem has yuusha in therapy, but not intensive. spending time with mama has proven to be more effective long term, and consistently good, so she goes to talk therapy a little less often than people would usually. yuusha is a brave kid but will shy away easily if the mental anguish gets too strong when trying to confront a traumatic memory. this is something she's still working through with mom and her therapist.

- yuusha has a few slight speech impediments, due to not talking much at all before meeting salem, as well as having trouble adjusting to her new sharp carnie teeth in conjunction with also learning more vocab.

- yuusha finds it a little difficult to keep track of time. while she enjoys organising many things, the process of tediously organising her books into a perfectly color coded row seems to eat away at the clock. she barely notices.

- yuusha wants to get into some sort of craft work with thread and needle, but she's deathly scared of needles. salem has looked into knitting classes for her, and thinks yuusha might be more comfortable with that, due to the large blunt needles (as opposed to sharp, small ones, which are more similar to syringes or tranquillisers)

- yuusha hates the doctor. she doesn't enjoy being touched and prodded in such a way. she even gets upset when her mama brushes her hair. salem has resorted to grooming her hair like a cat instead, which yuusha is slightly less objected to. salem excuses it on the grounds she's not a human, so she can do that if she needs to. yuusha forgot that licking people's hair wasn't normal, for a while.

- yuusha was very afraid of everything when salem took her in. she was clearly traumatised and close to having a severe meltdown or panic attack, so salem took to a direct, stern meeting with her boss mary to let her know that if yuusha doesn't get adequate treatment, patience, and therapy, then salem is going to kill everyone and then herself. mary was so in disbelief at the audacity that she just accepted it and permitted yuusha to be treated like a normal human being (which for some reason was not the plan initially...)

- yuusha loves colorful things. salem has spent a lot of money finding rare authentic prints of lisa frank books for her girl and yuusha has read them so many times over she's begun to highlight and notate the pages with doodles in colored pen.

- yuusha has an inexplicable need to listen to technology. like, the humming of a computer monitor, or the static of a TV. salem assumes this is due to it being a sensory seeking behaviour of some sort. yuusha tells her otherwise, and that she feels like she can hear people laughing and talking to each other when she tunes into the frequencies. salem was a little concerned, but this was the only instance of yuusha saying she was experiencing something like this, so salem kept a close eye but didn't worry too much.

- yuusha enjoys mismatching colors on her clothes. she was always made fun of for doing this before salem took her in, but salem never judged her for it, so she became comfortable going the whole mile and wearing all sorts of colors and combinations of accessories.

- yuusha likes making jewellery for her mama and friends! usually kid's stuff like loom bands, kandi, beads, silly strings, etc. even candy necklaces.

- speaking of friends, salem worked very hard to get yuusha permission to have contact with other children her age. yuusha now regularly attends a youth group with some other kids her age from around the city. yuusha made some casual friends very quickly due to her friendly nature and tendency to try and include everyone in activities.

- outside of the youth group sessions each week, yuusha has contact with some of her friends from there over direct email under salem's supervision. salem installed a rainbow skin for her email address that yuusha really liked. the kid was a little upset she couldn't choose all the colors for her text color, though. she wanted rainbow text :(

-if you asked yuusha what her favourite color was, she'd say all of them. if you asked her to pick one, she'd think for a good minute or so, then tell you she likes white because it's like a blank canvas where you can put any color you want, or even all of them. she says black is her second favourite because it's the older sister of white. (you do not quite know what this means but you nod along anyway)

- yuusha has a casual interest in old retro pc software for painting, like ms paint and kid pix. salem found a shareware disk at a garage sale she passed by one day, and took it home for her daughter. since then yuusha's been experimenting a lot with what she can make with that software. salem always tells her to save her work to the USB drive so salem can show it to her coworkers.

- yuusha is the kind of person who doesn't care what dessert she gets at the buffet, even if she doesn't really like the taste. yuusha just wants to try everything and anything, not for knowledge, but enrichment of her life and experiences.

- yuusha is being trained in a private program under salem's constant supervision and mary's command, in preparation for her eventually moving to combat training, then learning how to track and kill other carnies. salem is still trying to figure out how she's going to approach this situation, given she knows yuusha won't take the psychological effects of this kind of "job" any better than she did. it's mostly just excercise and agility training, as well as reaction time + perception

- yuusha goes on outings with her mama, usually to fun places. salem always brings a gun, as well as anything she needs in case of an emergency, but ESPECIALLY with yuusha. salem has had bounties put on her head before by underground criminal networks in amber urbe, and she is always very very careful when bringing yuusha outside of where it's safe. she doesn't want to make her kid's life miserable, so she lets her come with, but salem always reminds her to practice a special safety protocol that they made together, and has a small set of rules for yuusha to follow while they're out. yuusha is a good bean so she doesn't care as long as she can have fun with mama! ^_^

- yuusha's hair is pretty coarse, so while she's tried to arrange it in silly ways, it never seems to last. yuusha typically just uses kid's hair dye crayons now to add a bit of color.

-yuusha is oblivious to the fact that her mom intimidates the living shit out of any kid or parent that knows her. however, since yuusha is so easygoing about it all it tends to rub off on others, and people feel slightly more at ease around salem when yuusha is with her. a bundle of sunshine and joy, and then the most dark brooding broad shouldered woman youve ever seen (thats mama)

-salem always makes sure to keep yuusha away from inmates scheduled for execution (meaning their freshly deceased bodies will be provided as food for salem and now also yuusha) because while yuusha knows she has to eat people, salem doesn't want her to get attached to anyone like that. she just wants yuusha to eat without worrying, or feeling guilty, so salem reminds yuusha that everyone will die someday, and whatever time it happens can be really random, and sometimes inconvenient, but it's just the way life is, so living happily is the most important thing, and to be thankful to be alive and amongst her loved ones. yuusha rolls with this, but internally has a lot of questions about it.

thats all i got, but i'll give an extra bonus salem fact

- there are rare moments where salem will request a "private meeting" with a specific inmate on death row. only mary knows what this entails, and allows it. after the meeting concludes, only salem walks out of the room, and the next day the status section inmate's file is marked as "deceased". their body is gone, and salem leaves that room wiping blood from her lips, curled into a smile.

From Beyond The Grave

Dire Crowley stared proudly at the fresh haggle of students in front of him. He felt great potential in all of them, but he also sensed that some of them would be a bit troublesome. Like that newly sorted Heartstabyul student, isn't his name Trapo-something? Ah, nevermind, the crow will just learn his name later.

However.. Why does he feel like something's missing?..

Wait a minute, how many students did the carriages bring today? He could recall there being 37, but there's only 36...

A startling realization hit him.

Ah.

There's a student missing.

Good Seven, Dire, your old age is getting to you.

Crowley cursed to himself as he speedwalked through the halls and towards the Gate Chamber. Oh, how foolish of him to forget one of his students! Did one of the staff not remember to double-check the Gates themselves, or were they simply left behind?

Nevertheless, that student should be grateful, for the great Dire Crowley will be fetching them himself! Ohoho, is he so gracious?

But the more closer he got to the Gates, the more he felt.. uneasy. Like a great tragedy will befall upon him as he went around each corner closer to the Gates. An old crow he may be, but his instincts did not fail him, yet.

One more left turn, and then he smelled it.

The familiar, sour, and awful scent of death and blood.

(The instructor part of Dire screamed at him to move faster, to see if his student was alright. The smell of blood, of death, of misery made him stop walking and made him start running towards the Gates. A student-- a child was in danger, under his watch, and he must save them. Before it was too late, before he was too late.)

The new student was small, Crowley noticed as his lash of love wrapped itself around the unruly cat familiar.

They were even smaller than Perfect Riddle Rosehearts, practically swimming in their oversized ceremonial robes with the sleeves going way past their dainty hands. Their hood cast an eerie shadow over their face, only revealing the lowest half of their face and a few locks of dark hair while their lips were pouted in a small frown.

Yet, despite their petite figure and polite behavior when greeting him, Crowley was still on guard because the thick-- almost suffocating --stench of death oozing around them. However, it would be oh so rude of him to mistreat a student just because of a small inconvenience. (Besides, he was already used to that smell, once upon a time.)

As they scrolled through the gardens and forward to the ceremony, Crowley answered each and every curious question of the new student. Their cluelessness of what kind of school Night Raven College was, and the awe of attending such a prodigious institute was endearing to him, like a fledging trying to learn how to fly. His endearment only grows when he heard the new student told him that they were excited to learn all of the mystical arts.

Ah! Such dedication and willingness! This young fledgling will go along swimmingly with Pomefiore!

Crowley burst through the doors of the Ceremonial hall with his new tiny student in tow, interrupting whatever statement that Perfect Kalim Al-Asim may say. (No, he was not struck in the bathroom! Mind your own business, young sir!)

However, it seemed that during their short talk with each other, the Headmaster somewhat forgot that the bitter stench of death would affect the other non-human students of NRC.

(A small, twisted part of him was slightly relieved at the fact he didn't make up that awful odor. Those days of ash and bloodshed were now far behind him.)

As the newest and tiniest student approached the mirror; at the corner of his sharp eyes, Crowley noticed how tense the Savanaclaw students near them would go as they pass by. Octavinelle students, at least the one who are merfolk, glanced at the petite teenager with wariness, even the Leech twins were a bit uneasy as he could tell.

And somewhere in the crowd of purple and gold cloak, Dire felt the questioning stare of Sir Vanrouge, the vampiric fae's own instincts probably told that something about the new student seemed.. off.

Divus soon joined him, the Alchemy teacher raising a single eyebrow at the student's reactions, and at the headmaster himself. Crowley gave him a look that promised to tell him later and Divus retreated, letting the crow fae taking his place among the school staff.

The Mirror of Darkness gazed down at the child before it and asked one question.

"State thy name."

A pair of pale and bruised hands reached up to lift move their hood just enough to reveal their face, the knuckles so marred that Dire could practically see the bone.

The sight that came after shocked them all.

(The child's face had small cuts, and spots of black and purple. Each gash was jagged with torn edges, with the largest one crossing right over their right eye. And their eye, oh gods, their eye. It was gouged out, a gaping, bloody socket stared blankly at the space of it.)

Next to Dire; Divus gasped silently, his hand clapping over his face in horror. Vargas jumped back, almost tripping after his own feet. Trein's eyes widened and in his arms was Lucius leaping out with a loud yowl. Sam, despite not being one of the teachers, grimaced and shuttered at the sight. The crowd behind them grew more curious at their reactions.

Still, the child ignored them, and ignored the crowd. Their one, fully intact, silver-colored eye looked up to the Mirror of Darkness, who was unfazed at their mauled face and waiting for their response.

With a slight sigh, the now undead student answered in a blank voice.

"Yuusha Mortem."

Good lord, an AU where Yuusha came from one of the human farms in Promised Neverland?? THAT'S PRIME ANGST MATERIAL THERE, BABY!!

Oh my god, imagine Yuusha just telling everyone about the farms and how basically every child there is raised to be a demon's lunch-- Complete and utter horror, I'll tell you. (Leona and Jack never see meat the same way ever again.)

Can.. Can we call this branch AU the "Dead Neverland AU"?? Idk, I just think it sounds neat. :)

I think in the Dead Neverland AU, Yuusha is one of the kids who actually managed to escape along with a few others, but got betrayed and was left for dead by another kid as a "distraction". (Cue DN!Yuusha having trust issues.)

DN!Yuusha is more resourceful and physical fit than regular Yuusha, so they will be more independent and secretive about their "condition". They're also more.. cruel?? manipulative?? malevolent??? than regular Yuusha, too. Hey, you gonna do what you gonna do in order to survive in a world full of murderous mamas and bloodthirsty demons.

They're also a LOT younger than regular Yuusha by 4 years since the demon want more "fresher" meat. (Regular Yuusha is 16, just like Ace and Deuce. While DN!Yuusha is 12. Lol, good luck to Crowley because he's now taking care of an angsty, traumatized 12 year old with trust issues and a knife.)

aLSO!!!!-- I want to see Yuusha reacting to the wonderful mess that is Twisted Wonderland!! What I can see in the anime, the Promised Neverland seems kinda dull and plain. So, seeing and experiencing a lot of fun, colorful things is one way to make Yuusha open up their undead heart. :, )

DN!Yuusha getting to try their first cupcake/tart with Riddle and Trey. Playing Magishift with Jack and Leona. Eating seafood for the first time and having to play the piano with Azul. Taking dance lessons with Jamil and riding into the sunset on the magic carpet with Kalim.

Wearing extravagant clothes that they only see in storybooks with Pomefiore, and Vil fussing over their health and appearance just like all the other mamas. Seeing technology for the first time and having random gaming matches with Idia. Getting to see Malleus doing magic tricks for them and Lilia reading bedtime stories.

Just Yuusha getting to experience what it's like to be a child again with their new big siblings by their side.

When they do find out they were murdered. Parental instinct through the root. Imagine the staff tying to find a way to get revenge for yuusha.

Crowley speedrunning on his research on how to travel to Yuusha's world, just to beat up whomever dared to kill his (figurative) child.

Crewel making scent-cancelling and regeneration potions for Yuusha, and trying to fix their numerous stab wounds. (Kudos to Crewel, but his efforts will go to waste since the wounds will just show up again once nighttime comes.)

Trein comforting Yuusha whenever their nightmares of their death gets a little too real, and giving them cookies and hot drink like he did with his daughters.

Vargas encouraging Yuusha to be more active and encouraging students to talk to them because he noticed that Yuusha is always alone during pair-up exercises.

Sam giving Yuusha discounts on food and school supplies, even offering Yuusha a job to work in his mystery shop since Monstro Lounge only had night shifts available.

Just.. just the NRC staff being supportive and soft.. 🥺

NRC staff, or really even any of the students, finding out that Yuusha was murdered by a relative or significant other and just....losing it over the fact that Yuusha was murdered by someone she loved and trusted, yet she remains so kind and loving? they all just kind collectively have a mental breakdown over it

The time where Yuusha finally reveals that they were murdered by someone they love is more of a matter of if, not when. Despite their friendly and kind nature, Yuusha.. is surprisingly very secretive about their past. Yeah, they will talk about their hobbies and likes for hours and hours if prompted, but any single curious question at their background and Yuusha will go deadly silent.

But if Yuusha DID ever reveal their murderer's ture identity, well... Let's say that a lot of people are VERY overprotective of Yuusha.

(NRC's reactions in the undercut!)

Crowley would be appalled, horrified, and absolutely devastated at the fact that someone would just.. murder their loved one like that. His research on otherworldly teleportation will be stalled and Yuusha will find themselves to be more coddled than usual with increasingly large allowances and sudden free days.

Crowley is already really overprotective of Yuusha now, but after the grand reveal? Let's say that Yuusha's classes will be a lot more chaotic with Crowley barging in ever so often. (Oh, be quiet, Divus! He's just checking in with his child!)

Crewel will immediately ask Yuusha if they want to have therapy, because good LORD, that's a lot of trauma to unpack. Crewel and Trein will be Yuusha's silent oasis within this whole ordeal. With all the spoiling and sudden sympathy, Crewel and Trein will treat Yuusha the same as ever, which is relieving for them because Crowley and Kalim can be.. overwhelming at times.

Trein felt immense sorrow for Yuusha. In this AU, Yuusha reminds Trein very much of his daughters and stepson, who have all moved out of the house. Mozus is a very family-oriented man, so he feel nothing but fury for Yuusha's murderer. In classes, Yuusha will receive nothing but gentle scolding from Trein, and even let them sleep in class. (Yes, everyone is quite jealous. But the ones who knew? They just let Yuusha have this one moment of peace.)

Now, here comes my favorite trio of idiots; Ace, Deuce, and Grim!! They've been with Yuusha since the beginning, even more so with Grim.

Ace will be much nicer than in canon if Yuusha ever tell him the truth, but still be playful. However, it's more like the gentle, almost hesitate kind of playful. He wants to take off Yuusha's attention from the past, so he makes Yuusha pull more pranks with him. Fortunately, Crowley's coddling comes in handy because he lets Yuusha get away with anything and everything.

Is it bad to say that Deuce's first reaction to the truth would be to beat their murderer into a blood pulp? He does feel horrified at the truth but he also just wants to bash that scumbag's skull in!! How dare they kill Yuusha while they clearly love them!!! In the end, Soft Deuce comes out and he will cry at the injustice of Yuusha's death.

Grim doesn't really know the utter pain of being betrayed by their loved one, mostly because Grim.. doesn't have anyone that close to him to begin with. But all he knows is that Yuusha is crying and Grim doesn't want them to cry. For the first time, Grim allows Yuusha hug him close to their chest, purring in hopes of keeping away the sadness, the pain.

Yuusha is the first one who shows Grim kindness and warmth of family. And now, it is Grim's turn to give that warmth and kindness back.
