When’s the next Yu Yu Hakusho rewatch happening? Anyone know?
Yep also in your rewatch for ep 67 I kinda expected you to mention that part where we see Sensui for the first time in the dark somewhere.
Oh yeah, at the time, I didn’t really think to mention it. I guess I was just trying to build the suspense to when we first saw him in the town-square with the “I’ll kill them all line”
Yeah, hi! I was just wondering if you're ever going to continue your Yu Yu Rewatch series? They're absolutely hilarious and I was really looking forward to the saint beasts arc!
Hi! I’m glad you found them funny :DI was actually thinking about this the other day, and I totally wanted to finish the series but didn’t know if it would be weird since the tumblr yyh rewatch was over? I had a lot of fun doing them though, so I’ll probably pick it back up
Chapter Black thoughts - Old Rivals, New Problems
“Everyone needs a hobby.” dude played video games for 36 hours straight and tried to pass it off as not a big deal. Kaitou is all of us
I don’t think I fully realized how manipulative and amoral Sensui is back when I first watched. but really, fuck anybody who puts a literal child’s life on the line for--I don’t know, some kind of ethical “gotcha”, or for the sake of proving how terrible mankind is or some shit
and now Kurama, who has tried so hard to be good, arguably more than anyone else in that room, has to be the one to kill this little boy. he just wanted to be normal, human Shuichi. but Shuichi can’t terrify a child to create an advantage, knowing that when he wins, the child will die. not even to save the world. Kurama has to do that.
honestly, making Amanuma and Mitarai watch Chapter Black wasn’t the worst thing Sensui did to them. the worst thing was making them believe that he cared about them, re-centering their universe on him and him alone. everything they did was for his approval, these kids who just wanted a friend. using vulnerable people for your own ends--that’s the worst thing.
“I have no regrets, Yusuke.” to this day, I don’t know if that’s a lie or not.
did Kurama kill Gourmet because he implied Kurama was letting his fox side down? did Kurama kill Gourmet because he was angered and frightened by the idea that some part of him still wants to be like Yoko? did he just want to lash out at the bad guys after being forced to kill Amanuma? who knows?? probably not even Kurama tbh
Elder Toguro is scum, but I’ve always been fascinated with how he has a total blind spot when it comes to Younger Toguro. he blames YT’s actions on Yusuke and Genkai; he genuinely can’t imagine that YT would try to hurt him of his own accord
so I’m happy that Hiei decided to tag along again, because character development, but he hasn’t really done anything of note for all of Chapter Black. the dude is effectively the World’s Most Apathetic Cheerleader at this point
YURRA-YOTOKO and YAMMANATE. that’s two drinks for the people playing at home
you can pontificate at him all you want about morality and philosophy, but at the end of the day Yusuke is still going to punch you in the face, because that’s his job and he’s good at it and it doesn’t have to be more complicated than that. god bless Urameshi Yusuke
do the animators just enjoy drawing the Big Bads emerging from lower elevations? we had Toguro poking his head out of the crater, and now Sensui’s sticking his head and shoulders out of the water. they were both right before some dramatic reveal, too... yeah, I take it back, this is almost certainly a deliberate parallel
I have never understood this bit with the butterfly. does it only exist in Sensui’s head? did he somehow bring the image off the screen and into reality? is the director just being artsy? WHO KNOWS
Yusuke is at Peak Smartmouth during this fight and I’m living for it
now that I think about it, it was probably Kazuya’s thoughts that Murota heard back when they were trying to find Sensui. the other personalities couldn’t have mustered that much outright malice. (a lot of the traits that I associate with Sensui actually belong to Minoru, I guess. I don’t know how to feel about that.)
Chapter Black thoughts - Dangerous Games
I intend to document every terrible mispronunciation of the Japanese that exists in this fucking dub, but god, at what cost? “Raykoo Rashooyookin”. my suffering is boundless
I’ve been seeing all these themed workouts lately, but where is the Genkai workout? where is it? chop chop people I want to be able to flip over a bookcase the size of three human adults when I’m 75
how is this bike not flying apart at the sheer amount of stress Yusuke is putting on it? who engineered this bike to be able to take Spirit Detective levels of athleticism?
Kinnamy Hagiri. at least he got the family name right. thank god I haven’t made a drinking game out of this
Yusuke is such a city kid it’s almost comical. every time we’ve seen him out in nature he’s been like “what the hell was that noise? why’s the ground so uneven? how am I supposed to know where I am when there aren’t any signs? fuck this”
ok so yeah Sniper fired a bunch of knives at Yusuke but. there were also like... normal kitchen implements in there. I saw a screwdriver, an ice pick, and whatever that wedge-shaped thing is. what I’m saying is that there is some poor sap in the nearby area with a kitchen devoid of any tools because Kaname Hagiri wanted to get quirky with his ammo
where has Hiei even been for the past two disks? chilling in the mountains and terrorizing hikers? fighting bears? it’s not like he has friends he could stay with outside of the gang
I’m so glad that Yusuke is finally calling Hiei out about being a goddamn tsundere, because SOMEONE had to
Keiko holding down the fort with her hysterical conspiracy theorist act. someone’s got to deal with the police. (actually, how many times has Keiko had to do this? some of this Spirit Detective stuff can get pretty rowdy. they can’t always fly under the radar of local law enforcement)
Genkai shouting instructions like “YUSUKE YOU FILTHY CASUAL”
Oh man, I think this is the first time we’ve seen the actual King Enma. I have to wonder what kind of affairs he handles, if the fate of human world is something he can leave to his son. (I ought to read the manga again--I think they talk about that kind of stuff, I just can’t remember the specifics)
幽☆遊☆白書 - Yu Yu Hakusho
Chapter Black Thoughts - Dark Indulgence
“Even if the end of the world was tomorrow, I’d still go! That just makes it more important.” Kuwabara has his priorities in order, I see
ghhhh I love this arc but. my fucking kingdom for voice actors who can pronounce japanese names correctly
Kuwabara is the first person that his friends call out to when they’re in trouble, and it’s not because he can sense ghosts or make a sword out of energy. it’s because he’d put his life on the line for them, no matter the odds. a mulberry is a tree aND KUWABARA IS A MAN
and on the other side, there’s Mitarai, who never had anybody stand up for him like that. the first person to show him a scrap of empathy is Sensui; no wonder Mitarai let himself be dragged into this scheme
so if Genkai hadn’t been around, Yusuke would have remained totally oblivious to Kuwabara’s peril because he’s so damn bad at paying attention to other people. once again: don’t send a Spirit Detective to do a cranky old psychic’s job
“You’re human like us all. No one would make that kind of sacrifice.” And yet still he steps forward. this isn’t just Kuwabara vs. Sea Man, it’s the belief that humans can still be noble and good vs. the belief that there’s nothing left in us worth saving.
Kuwabara walks away from that fight carrying everyone, friend and enemy, on his back. Yusuke had to make the hard choice to kill the Doctor, but Kuwabara makes another hard choice--to show mercy, even when that’s not what he wants. to be kind in spite of every cruelty. because otherwise his victory would be meaningless.
“I saved ‘em all. All by myself, Urameshi.” I’m so proud of my son. sobs
ah, but now Mitarai’s got to deal with the hardasses. sorry dude, there are only so many cinnamon rolls in the world
“Hiei’s wanted to get his hands on that tape for years.” Why? Does Hiei?? Hate humans so much??? seriously is this ever explained because I don’t remember
Mitarai’s monologue fucked me up when I was younger. the writers for the Chapter Black arc were pretty damn good at chilling monologues
“The capacity for evil is but one ingredient in the human soul.” Chapter Black is one of the darkest arcs in the show, but I don’t think it ever gets grimdark. it shows how Sensui came to his twisted conclusions about humanity, but it doesn’t validate his condemnation of it.
“It takes sacrifices being in human form all day.” man, now I’m curious. where are the headcanons about Botan adjusting to a flesh prison
I don’t think the only reason Yusuke didn’t crack like Sensui is because he “didn’t think too much”. It was Sensui’s rigid, black-and-white ideals that prevented him from wrapping his mind around what he saw. Yusuke is more flexible--he’s been working in shades of gray since long before he became Spirit Detective. He can adapt where Sensui couldn’t.
I love how Yusuke’s thoughts during this fight are just “Blocking?? What the fuck?? What is this witchcraft”
honestly I’m surprised Yusuke and Co. can keep up with a man who’s at least 70% leg
Shizuru may not be as noble as her brother, but she is brave and smart and she’ll do whatever she can to protect him, now that she isn’t confined to the spectator stands. love those Kuwabara siblings
Yusuke is the definition of the loose cannon cop who still gets results when no one else can, thus somehow maintaining job security
