This is my dark Yuki Yuna illustration I drew for a dark magical girl art collab on Instagram back in October!

These are hair color drafts I did for my dark Yuki Yuna design. When I asked for feedback in the gc, I got a lot of mixed opinions on which looked the best. In the end I choose light pink for the color contrast.

As for my design process, my first inspiration for the design was Yozakura (night cherry blossom viewing) which influenced the color scheme and kept her cherry blossom motif.

The core idea I wanted to portray the feeling of a broken maiden. So, I added notches to her flower hair accessory, rips to her ribbons and clothing, and enlarge her hair clip to be a an eye covering to imply damage and unease. The off shouder straps and ribbons wrapping around her legs are meant to look like white bandages (and Sange ribbons but I think that got lost in the final piece). I also took influence from her Dai Mankai form too with the one gauntlet, hip armor, and most importantly the marks crawling up her cheek (and orange as a nod to her curse in Season 2).

I hope people enjoy the art as much as I enjoyed designing and drawing her!

Ah, that's such a good question! I have mixed but mostly positive feelings on it, especially as a disabled person.

I do think the concept of Sange- that once a magical girl goes full power she has to sacrifice a bodily function to the Shinju (aka god tree)- is really neat. I'm a big fan of the "power at a price" trope, especially when it comes to magic. I love fictional worldbuilding where magic is incredibly powerful but requires you to sacrifice something important to you. Sange is an interesting take on that, especially since it can and does happen multiple times.

The usage of Sange in Yuki Yuna also gives us disabled magical girl rep! The biggest one being Mimori Togo, who is a wheelchair user. I also like how the fairies in Yuki Yuna function as accessibility aids, with fairies being gifted to magical girls for each Sange incident. It's cool how magic is used to compensate for lost physical abilities, like how Togo is able to move around when she's transformed thanks to ribbons.

I think the reason why this is a controversial topic is because, ultimately, Sange is reversed and all the girls are made able-bodied again. It kinda feels like a cheap cop-out after all the weight placed on Sange and its impact on the girls. Disabled rep is so rare, and is ESPECIALLY rare in the magical girl genre. It sucks losing that.
