For this piece I took inspiration from Yves Klein work ‘Anthropomorphic’.
‘Yves Klein used naked women as ‘human paintbrushes’ to make his ‘Anthropometry’ paintings, which were produced as elaborate performances in front of an audience. Klein, in bow-tie and suit, would conduct the women as they covered themselves in paint (a colour he patented as ‘International Klein Blue’) and made imprints of their bodies, whilst musicians played his ‘Monotone Symphony’ – a single note played for twenty minutes, followed by twenty minutes of silence.’ (TATE)
I found this work rather interesting in relation to my theme and idea. This piece has often been criticised for its sexism and use of the female body. Thinking about his work I wanted to create my own print. I found it interesting that Kline’s paint was blue, a colour associated with men, especially in relation to his use of female models. Even though its their own imprints, its still his gaze. So here I make my own print to reclaim it, choosing the colour red opposite to his ‘masculine’ blue. I initially wanted to use pink which perhaps would have worked better “blues for boys, pinks for girls” although I think it still works. I like how in the end I turn my nude painted body to camera, the art work is in the background but your forced to look at this ‘human paintbrush’, the model.
